When shifting a motorcycle, you press down to go down a gear, lift up to go up a gear, right?

So, let's say you are cruising along in 6th gear and you get off the highway and come to a complete stop. Do you have to click down 6 times to get back to first?

Edit: This is totally serious... I've always wanted to know the exact mechanisms of how it works.

But neutral is in the middle...

It's confusing me.

Alex-7

Neutral is usually one above first.

You sometimes hit false neutrals between other gears.

So... If I'm in 6th gear, can I half click into neutral and then full click would go straight to what?

Supper

yeah, a half click, as in half way between gears, drops you into nuetral.

usually only between 1st and 2nd gear, but on older bikes with more worn transmissions you can happen into nuetral anytime you don't fully move the shift lever.

read above posts, halfway between gears.

That seems strange.

Do bikes have any sort of display that tells what gear the tranny is currently in?

Alex-7
07-21-2005, 05:09 PM
Some do. Many just have a neutral light or nothing at all.

no dirt bike I know of does, and thats pretty much all my experience there.

I always find myself in 5th gear tapped out grabbing for more gears but not having any. Granted, at that point I'm already traveling at ~ 100mph on dirt.

And nuetral is oft times hard to find on a dirt bike, takes practice and knowing the feel of your bike to get it every time. Usually its try and click it up and then ease out the clutch lever to see if its in nuetral. Watched to many people flip bikes by dropping the clutch while it was still in 1st. Usually it just kills the engine, but sometimes it won't.

Ahhh, very fast with mysterious handling.

Big bore bikes of that vintage scare me. The chassis tech was not up to par with the power the motors were putting out for a while there........

So what's a good size bike from around that time? I can't see myself dropping $8k for a motorcycle.

you could go back to early 90's duacitis.

Granted they will be a bit underpowered, but their suspension and frame geometry were close to a decade ahead of most japanese super bike builders back in the day. Don't know what the comparisons are anymore between the two.

There is actually a 91 or 92 ducati sitting for sale at the yamaha place for $3,800. I would jump on it if I still wanted a street bike.

I want to spend under $3k if possible and get a decent sport bike that won't be brutally uncomfortable to ride for up to 50 - 60 miles. Throw up some options, will ya guys?

so you want a sport turing?

well in that case, I dunno, never looked into them.

The Ducati's I was talking about were the super bikes from the early 90's when their technology was blowing the jap bikes out of the water.

uh...

if you want one of those for street give me a couple hours and I'll dig up the URL's for the street only versions, lots beefier to withstand serious impacts on pavement.

Granted, your going to wind up paying well over $300 for one, where the Six Six One cost ~ $190

if you dig around enough on motorcycle websites you'll see many different kinds, there are quite a few street specific ones built by companies like Joe Rocket and Alpenstar among others.

pretty much, only older by about 7 years.

I prefer bikes that only one person can ride on, gives me an excuse not to take friends for a ride.

I can't tell you anything wrong with the ZX-11 since I haven't been "into" street bikes enough to do any depth of research for going on 5 years now. And even then I only researched Hondas and Ducatis

What about Buell?
Buell's are built by Harley Davidson IIRC, and have quite a different feel to them. I seem to remember that they use the swingarm as the oil resevoir, and some other frame part for coolant or something.

It lowers a lot of the weight quit a bit and changes the feel of the suspension since so much weight is back there behind the pivot point.

I work with 4 guys who own Buells and they love em. Never even sat on one myself.
