Looks like we're down to 1 duck. We lost one about a week ago, and then we only saw one this morning.

We saw a fox sneaking to the back of the pen around 6 a.m. Mayhem went chasing after it (good boy, earned his kibble for today), but I have to assume it will be back. From my bedroom window to where we saw the fox was about 120 feet, and I would have had a clear shot...

I'm thinking about getting a .22 rifle for a distance shot like that, and a smallish shotgun or maybe a .22 pistol for if I can get closer to that fucker.

Ideas?

a .22 rifle will do the job easy, but have you thought of using baits?

I don't have time for baits or traps. I know that fucker will be back in the morning, I want to pop a cap in his ass.

Over 192 ft-lbs! That's a serious hunting gun! This stunning precharged pneumatic rifle has what every airgunner wants: accuracy backed by truly daunting power. The Dragon Slayer 50 is made by ShinSung, a Korean company that knows what hunters really want in an airgun. After all, Koreans have been hunting with airguns for decades.

The power and accuracy of the Dragon Slayer 50 would have been enough to make airgunners happy, but they added a beautiful, well-balanced hardwood ambidextrous Monte Carlo stock (right-hand sidelever). Checkering on the pistol grip and forearm are another indication of the level of detail poured into this rifle's sculpted design.

Cock the rifle with the sidelever and insert a .50 caliber bullet in the mammoth loading trough. When you're out in the field, that giant loading area will make it easy to pop in another bullet when you want to get off a finishing shot. There aren't any sights, but this combo comes with a Leaper's scope and a laser. When the Dragon Slayer 50 air rifle hits your doorstep, you'll be ready for the hunt!

The single air reservoir is located directly below the barrel and is filled with either a scuba tank, electric compressor or a hand pump. Put 3000 psi in the gun and get ready for some awesome power. With a 225-grain bullet, we got 192 ft-lbs of pummeling energy. A 200-grain bullet on a 3000 psi fill will sail downrange around 567 fps, while the tenth shot will go about 541 fps (approx. 2200 psi). Each gun is individual, and some guns may get lower velocity...or higher velocity.

Thanks Alain, but that's a bit more than I'm looking for.

I went down to the local hunting supply store in town... They have some decent stuff, but you have to wait 7 days, even for a rifle. They had shotguns, which I don't really want because I need to take this asshole out from a distance, and they had rifles. Biggest rifle they carry is a 22.

The lady showed me a couple different inexpensive rifles... Remember, I just want to kill a fox, not enter the Olympics. There was a Remington .22 LR with a scope for $240, and a used, but never fired 17 caliber for $125 that needs a scope (an extra $30 or so, she said). The Remington was a semi-auto, the 17 caliber was bolt action single shot.

I actually liked the Remington. The scope was nice, it felt balanced, and was comfortable to hold. I need to be able to pick the fox off from about 40 yards, and feel pretty confident I could hit him with it at that distance. The only problem is that a .22 LR round might not kill the fox, but if I could go for the good wound, I could finish him off semi-auto. :)

120 feet? Don't bother with a scope, you don't need it.

I want to put the shot right in it's fuckin' eye. The rifle with no scope has no sights at all, so it needs a scope.

going to assume figuratively that you are going to shoot his eye... and really shoot for a lung/heart shot...

.222 Remington

they used to use it for exactly that purpose...to avoid damaging the pelt

This post is false.

This post is false.
Most of the pelt hunters I know use a .222, .223, or .22-250 shooting the lightest bullet possible at the highest velocity possible to avoid pelt damage. If you ever "lower" yourself enough to go into someplace selling coyote pelts, you can almost always find at least one hole in the hide from the bullet.

More of them are moving to 243's or similar shooting banded solids or other solid type bullets because they -will not- expand and don't create much more of a hole then your high velocity hollow points.

Very few people trap for pelts anymore.

Forget that nonsense. You're obviously up against a rare breed of Foxbear. They look small but they're really huge. They are impervious to small arms fire. I recommend something that can handle .308 Winchester rounds, or a chainsaw arm.

if you can find one, a .22 swift is a nice round for stuff like this. but there arent very many rifle companys making them anymore

I haven't gotten my rifle yet, but we've also seen no signs of the fox, either. I think Mayhem scared him away.

When you do get your gun, make sure you clean it right. I'm going to offer up the best gun cleaning method, TFL style. After shooting, throw gun into concentrated automotive parts cleaner. Leave it there overnight. In the morning, fish the gun out with a coat hanger and burn off the parts cleaner\dirt\anything flammable with a MAPP gas torch. Throw the gun into the kitchen sink to quench it and then run it through the dishwasher.

When you get it out, shake off the loose rust\whats left of the grips\furniture. Load the gun and turn off all safeties, cock the hammer if so equipped. Look down the barrel a to make sure it's still there. Wet a cloth with salt water or battery acid and wrap the gun for safe keeping and put it into your safe or bookshelf or kitchen table or crib or whatever.
