2ndGen.Rocket 02-03-2006, 06:53 PM Everyone list any sort of new band that you currently dig and/or think that people should check out. We all know what bands there were, what are classics, and what will stand the test of time. It's high time we get some new artists out there that are making good songs and let people know. List the artist, what kind of music they play, and what songs to check out.
I posted this before, but Ima Robot is a great band. Check out anything from their self titled album, preferrably "dynomite" or "song #1". They are kind of a hard rock/punk/progressive band.
The Mars Volta. I'm sure everyone has heard of these guys, but I just want to re-iterate how good they are. Check out "Roulette Dares" or "Intertiatic ESP". Both absolutely amazing songs. They have a crazy drummer, and like to play strange rock songs with really weird timing. The lead singer has a Geddy Lee-esque voice that you know hasn't been touched
by cigarettes.
The Decemberists. An extremely good folk rock type band. The lead singer has a really dry sounding voice, but beautifully poetic lyrics. Check out the song "16 Military Wives".
Diamond Nights. Straight up classic rock sound. A strange mix of AC/DC and Bowie is the best way I could put it. Check out the song "Destination Diamonds".
Pepper. The perfect mix of reggae and rock. These guys are from Hawaii, and love to smoke weed. I first got turned on to them when my buddy played me a few songs, he used to hangout with them at shows in SoCal. Check out the songs "Back Home" and "Are You Down"
So hit me with something, I listen to damn near everything.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-03-2006, 06:56 PM I almost forgot to add some metal. YZF would probably like these guys alot, minus the screaming. One of the best new acts I've heard this year is a band called Trivium. It's a bunch of 19 and 20 year olds from Florida, but their album "Ascendancy" is filled with excellent speed metal and early Hammet type solos. Check out the song "Rain" or anything else on that album.
AmishBoy 02-03-2006, 07:18 PM Man your avatar sucks.

clean85owner 02-03-2006, 09:13 PM For some reason, I can't stop listening to "Demon Days" by Gorrilaz. It's addictive...
Supper 02-03-2006, 09:29 PM ---
Now playing: The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified
this song kicks some serious ass. Was watching TV today and noticed its been picked up for a few commercials as well now.
Carbine 556 02-03-2006, 09:54 PM try out jared leto's (the actor) band 30 Seconds to Mars. they have an orginal sound, at least compared to the music im used to, i dunno about ya'lls. Both cds are pretty damn good, but i prefer the first one
Or you can try Evan's Blue, but their cd doesnt come out till the 24th.
Supper 02-03-2006, 09:56 PM here's another one to check out:
Muse.
the albums to check out are:
Origin' of Symmetry
and
Showbiz
cool3865 02-03-2006, 10:06 PM Muse is ok
2ndGen.Rocket 02-04-2006, 04:54 AM The Mars Volta, are you serious???
Mars Volta is hands down one of the most original sounding and innovative prog-rock bands of this generation.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-04-2006, 04:54 AM here's another one to check out:
Muse.

I have some Muse, I like them alot.
Supper 02-04-2006, 09:34 AM I like them alot.
:werd:
some other music to check out:
Supreme Beings of Leisure (ran across them in the Animatrix soundtrack)
Fluke
Death in Vegas
The Gluey Brothers (wewt for Donught Quota)
Goldfrapp (she has one sexy voice)
eh... i could list artists for hours.
Wolfwood 02-04-2006, 11:36 AM +1 for The Mars Volta. The first time I heard "L'via L'viaquez" I was blown away.
I don't know too much in the realm of good new music, but I'm a huge Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment mark.
And Yzf...Iron Maiden does indeed rock. I love "Flight of Icarus."
Savington 02-04-2006, 03:26 PM +2 for Mars Volta. A truly original, good band.
I've picked up a liking for alternative hip-hop, nothing mainstream. DJ Format is one of the good ones. If anyone remembers the GIF file of the breakdancing animal mascots, that came from the video to his song "We Know Something". The other good one is Gold Chains. He's got several songs with interesting lyrics and a great baseline. Both are very skilled beat artists.
The Postal Service continues to blow me away as well. A great combo of electronic beats and quality vocals.
ComradeGiant 02-04-2006, 03:56 PM Its really hard to find consistently good music anymore. Even some of the groups mentioned above are "Meh" most of the time.
Dispite every song sounding nearly identical Flogging Molly is just catchy enough for it to not get old. Arcade Fire is usually pleasant. And Moby is always chill.
Moby
I'm with yzf....
1 bad 7 02-04-2006, 10:03 PM Mars Volta is hands down one of the most original sounding and innovative prog-rock bands of this generation.
:werd: I love 'em. Awesome thread, btw. With all the driving I do for work I'm always looking for new music for my iPod (up to almost 30 gigs now - need to buy a bigger iPod :( )
Supper 02-04-2006, 10:12 PM need to buy a bigger iPod :(
that sucks, doesn't it :banghead:
1 bad 7 02-04-2006, 10:15 PM I bought my friend's 15GB for $100 when his g/f bought him the new 60GB w/video, so I can't complain too much.
But at 27.x GB of music on my desktop, and I still have another 10-15 CDs to rip onto it. I wish iPods weren't so damn overpriced. I may look into other players when I get the money to upgrade. I also need to buy a new headunit for my car so I can plug in directly instead of using the FM transmitter. As much time as I spend in the car these days, I deserve better! :)
Supper 02-04-2006, 10:19 PM I have a second generation 20gig iPod, but have 56gb in iTunes with a whole fuckload waiting to be imported.
and if you're looking for a new headunit, I was checking out the new Panasonic (I think thats what it was) with the iPod unit, it kicked ass. had song info display on the head unit, and all controls so you could just plug in the iPod and leave it in the glove compartment.
1 bad 7 02-04-2006, 10:43 PM How much?
Supper 02-04-2006, 10:51 PM How much?
the head unit I was looking at was $400, the iPod adapter was ~ $100.
the salesman said the iPod adapter will work on any head unit over $140 supposedly.
1 bad 7 02-04-2006, 10:57 PM Thanks for the info. I've always been a Kenwood guy, but it's been years since I spent any amount of money on car audio. My current headunit is a Kenwood that cost $100 - I just wanted something to replace the stock unit when I first bought my Subaru. I didn't have the iPod at the time!
cool3865 02-05-2006, 03:35 AM first off, dont use Itunes, use Winamp........2nd off vinyl will always rule and so will cd's for use in car
1 bad 7 02-05-2006, 11:20 AM Screw CD's for use in the car. Let's see, 5000 songs on a device smaller than a pack of cigarettes, or two bulky cases full of discs that I have to fumble through while driving?
And yeah, I'm not a fan of iTunes either.
Supper 02-05-2006, 11:54 AM I love iTunes.
probably because i'm using it on a Mac. It sucks on windows for sure, but on the Mac there's nothing better.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-05-2006, 01:15 PM first off, dont use Itunes, use Winamp........2nd off vinyl will always rule and so will cd's for use in car
I don't like iTunes for the PC either, but I think Winamp sucks bad as well. I miss MusicMatch, that was always my favorite music program. It's just not compatible with iPod, so there's no point in having it.
And Vinyl will always be my favorite sound, CD second to that. However, lugging 2000 CD's with you all the time is a big pain in the ass. I can fit near 350 straight hours of music on my iPod and bring it anywhere I want.
and 1bad7, let me tell you what I do with all of my tunes. My roomate and I chipped in and bought a 250 gig external hard drive. My laptop was getting way too slow from all the music that I had on it, and I couldn't fit it all on my 30 gig iPod either. What I do is load my iPod with as many artists as I can, and put all of the songs that I really like on it. There is always the album that you have somewhere, by some artist that you can do without
Savington 02-05-2006, 02:43 PM I actually like iTunes. It's a little slow, but that's probably just my computer. Seems easy enough to use. I've got mixed feelings about Winamp; it'll play anything, anytime, but it is a resource hog like no other.
Animal 02-05-2006, 05:52 PM I use iTunes as well. Probably the best MP3 player, but you do need to disable a lot of it's "features" before you import your library (if you like the way it's organized already and don't want iTunes to duplicate/resort everything).
VLC is nice because songs don't get added to a library. And it'll play damn near anything (except wmv3).
meddle 02-05-2006, 11:50 PM +2 for Mars Volta.
@ the drive in was better. Fuck, I can't even remeber all their greatest songs. Some have very strange names. Star slight is one that comes to mind.
Supper 02-06-2006, 02:06 PM for those that like OST's:
James Horner always puts out some killer tracks.
edit: Eric Serra is another awesome composer as well.

2ndGen.Rocket 02-14-2006, 07:50 AM Should have posted this last week when I got it, but pick up the new Damian Marley album titled "Welcome to Jamrock". It's incredible.
The whole album is a great mix of reggae and hip-hop, with appearances from Eek-a-mouse, Nas, and Black Thought. Make sure you get the explicit version as well, I had to go to Border's to find it. The album has pissed off alot of the tourist industry in Jamaica because it is all about what really happens in Jamaica. As Chris Rock said, "I'm not talkin' about vacation Jamaica, Im talkin bout' stabbin Jamaica!".
Either way, it's one of the best crossover hip hop albums I've heard in a long, long time and anyone who is interested should check it out.

JPAccord 02-14-2006, 05:55 PM Some of my personal favorites are: Little Brother, Kero One, Eyedea and Abilities, Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, Planet Asia, Jedi Mind Tricks. I listen to mostly rap/hip hop, and i've started getting away from the mainstream stuff. Eyedeas and Dead Prez are both very good.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-15-2006, 06:56 AM I have Dead Prez, Planet Asia, and Immortal Technique. I actually love Immortal Technique, my buddy turned me on to his stuff.
Isn't Eyedea that guy that was on Blaze Battle a few years ago? I remember some white guy doing alot of freestyle under that name.
wonner 02-15-2006, 11:33 AM I have Dead Prez, Planet Asia, and Immortal Technique. I actually love Immortal Technique, my buddy turned me on to his stuff.
Isn't Eyedea that guy that was on Blaze Battle a few years ago? I remember some white guy doing alot of freestyle under that name.
Yeah, I think that was Eyedea....I know he is white and has done a ton of battles. Immortal Technique's stuff is awesome....his political shit really makes you think. I'm really into the whole Justus League(Little Brother). Their rhymes are on-point and the beats are very soulful and soothing. Being from NC, I'm surprised you're not into them 2ndGen.?
2ndGen.Rocket 02-15-2006, 05:10 PM I know have some of their stuff, I probably haven't listened to much of it though. I have so much music that I honestly haven't even listened to all of it. I will check it out on the ride to work tomorrow though. I have all of Revolutionary Volume II which I thought was real good though.
JPAccord 02-16-2006, 08:39 PM Yeah Eyedea is known for his battle rap skills, he won that Blaze Battle, as well as something that was on HBO...I can't remember the name of it? Eyedea is the lyricist of E&A, with Abilities as the turntablist. They're both awesome at what they do, and make some great stuff. Immortal Technique is definitely thought provoking, and Little Brother does have some nice chill beats. You should check out www.myspace.com/keroone
Myspace is good in the music respect, there's a lot of indi artists on there you can sample and listen to.
$100T2 02-16-2006, 08:40 PM I tried the mars volta and the decemberists stuff, not too crazy about it... The Damian Marley stuff, however, is the shit.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-17-2006, 08:54 AM Haha, good good.
Ryosuke91t 02-17-2006, 09:25 AM Little Brother, Kero One, Eyedea and Abilities, Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, Planet Asia, Jedi Mind Tricks...
My God, you guys actually have great taste in music.
The new Canibus album comes out soon.
I know he joined up, but does anyone know if he went to Iraq?
wonner 02-17-2006, 10:54 AM The new Canibus album comes out soon.
I know he joined up, but does anyone know if he went to Iraq?
There is a new Canibus album(Hip Hop For Sale) is out now and, like his other albums, it blows. As for his Army status, rumor has it he was honorably discharged for smoking cannibis.
The Frogs
Ween
Oxes
Everything else is music for wussys and chumps.
$100T2 02-18-2006, 06:17 PM Here, I'll add something. A woman I used to work with always played this CD, and everyone who heard it ended up buying it... Then, when I got a copy of it, my girlfriend took it to her work, and everyone there who heard it bought it as well. Good stuff.
Toby Lightman. She even does a good cover of "Real Love" by Mary J. Blige.
ComradeGiant 02-18-2006, 07:28 PM Iron Maiden
best rock band in the world
I downloaded some Iron Maiden the other day. I remember it being a lot more hardcore.
Jethro Tull rock harder than Iron Maiden, even with the flutes.
ComradeGiant 02-18-2006, 08:59 PM I did.
They are pretty fruity.
Edit:
I like Iron Maiden, they just aren't as heavy as I remember them being. Its been a while.
Manntis 02-18-2006, 09:36 PM Cartel de Santa (Factor Miedo, anyone?)
SR-71 (they do a great cover of "In Your Eyes")
Brown Derbies
TISM (you might remember "Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me")
Josh Dolgin aka So Called
Detsl (Pismo)
from time to time, Disturbed is a'ight.

2ndGen.Rocket 02-20-2006, 12:27 PM I am enforcing the rule that Linkin Park or anything to do with them is not allowed in this thread. If I remember, the title specifically stated "new" and "good" in it. That rules out Iron Maiden as well. Like it or not, Maiden was cheesy metal and still is. Linkin Park is a bunch of fairy douchebags that have the creative talent of a stapler.
ComradeGiant 02-20-2006, 01:59 PM We'll just say that Iron Maiden is better than Stryper, but not quite as good as Master of Puppets era Metallica.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-20-2006, 02:53 PM Iron Miaiden is "chessy" compared to the stuff you listen to?
bahahahahahahahaha
Yes, Iron Maiden is cheese metal. Characterized by graphics of bloody skeletons and a notorious mascot that appeared on every t-shirt, yet represented absolutely nothing that the band was about. Most every song was was cheesy, powerchord bullshit that was not remotely heavy because the band was not that talented. Everything I have posted so far has some sort of substance to it, whether it be lyrical substance, musical substance, or cultural substance. Iron Maiden represented none of those.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-20-2006, 02:57 PM I should add that Bruce Dickinson has far more vocal range then Hetfield...vocals really make hard rock/metal to me, unless there is a good hook to it, like some Accept stuff
anyone can vomit into a microphone with a "death" voice, bands that do that are literally a dime a dozen
So having a high pitched voice qualifies someone as being talented? How about simply having a very strong voice in one vocal range? Shit, you seem to think my music is so cheesy, yet I would put the lead singer of Mars Volta against Bruce Dickinson any day of the week. Shit, I'd put Sebastian Bach against Bruce Dickinson any day of the week.
FYI, being able to produce a low guttural sound like some bands do takes just as much talent and persistance as it does to produce a high pitched scream. Both severely strain the vocal chords and are difficult to do over long periods of time. But you would of course know that since you've been in so many bands yourself.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-20-2006, 03:05 PM you're a complete moron
and you've probably heard 5 maiden songs in your short little 25 year old life....what you know about music is absolutely nothing
No YZF, I think you're mistaken. See, your small little glans of a head cannot process music that didn't come out during your Firebird drivin' heyday. You are no different from every mullet sporting shithead who hangs out at the metal rebel blowing the cover band who just ripped up a verison of "I Remember You" by Skid Row. You don't look for any substance in music at all, and if you did you would realize half the shit you make fun of or denounce is infinitely more important and musically talented than one piece of shit that you've posted. The fact that you even mention my age shows just how threatened you are by the fact that I know more than you could ever imagine. See, you have no idea about my history. You have no idea just how much music I do listen to. You probably have no idea that my friends older brother used to take us to Iron Maiden concerts. You probably have no idea that Iron Maiden may in fact serve a small niche with what they did, but are by no means the Gods of rock that you think they are.
As a matter of fact, you just have no idea about anything. You are a small minded bigot with a napoleon complex that thinks he is tougher than anyone else on the planet. Guess what bud, you're not. You're a fucking old man who listens to shitty hair metal and thinks he knows the ultimate answer to the ultimate question. And I think just about everyone can agree with that last paragraph.
Supper 02-20-2006, 04:28 PM http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a303/Sup1661/8e74653a.gif
2ndGen.Rocket 02-20-2006, 04:33 PM You are a fucking dolt. "mindless" would entail that the music has no sort of value whether it be intellectual, lyrical, musical, or cultural. Since the music I post has at least one of those things, I don't see how it can be labeled as mindless. Care to enlighten us with your definition of mindless?
Maybe mindless actually means something that you dislike or don't understand. Yup, that sounds alot more like it.
And I know what else you would post for me to "ilk and make fun of". Christian music. And you're right, I would make fun of it. Talk about mindless music. Every song is about reaching out and touching the lord, jesus getting nailed up on the cross, or someone getting saved. There is no lyrical diversity, talent, or creativity involved whatsoever.
And nice jab with the Snoop Dogg comment. Pretty typical of someone who doesn't know the first fucking thing about hip-hop, yet feels qualified enough to call all of it "mindless".
How about we discuss some more metal then? I mean, I am quite sure that I know alot more of it than you do. You however seem to always highlight the fact that I listen to hip-hop, as if having a broad musical taste is a bad thing. You YZF, wholly represent the one thing that I truly hate about the south....complete ignorance. So many people in this area think that they know absolutely everything about everyone, yet they've never left their little shithole town and still live a block away from mom and dad. It's a damn shame too, I'm almost embarassed to say that I was born in the same general populus.
$100T2 02-20-2006, 04:44 PM what metal music has cultural and lyrical value???
I never said that! I don't care, that isn't what I listen to it for
Yep, he listens to thrash metal while he
A) goes to church,
B) makes shells for his shotgun,
C) sharpens his knife collection,
D) all of the above.
ComradeGiant 02-20-2006, 04:56 PM I grew up in Detroit
This explains EVERYTHING.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-20-2006, 05:00 PM I'm not from the south, I grew up in Detroit, with some of the best radio stations on the planet
trust me, I know just a little more than your naive ears about rock
No, you don't. I can put a guarantee on that.
2ndGen.Rocket 02-20-2006, 05:03 PM and that's pretty much it
So you listen to hair metal while you work out. I know the concept behind this, I listen to music while I work out to keep me fired up and lifting hard. Now, you like said music because it keeps you fired up and lifting hard whether it be because of the hard driving sound, the minor key tonality, or the raw agressive lyrics. It's fuel that keeps the primal, non-thinking part of your brain going.
In other words, it's mindless.
burnoutking999 02-23-2006, 11:13 AM ok heres one(no myspace this time!) that i just started listening to... they will be here on the 13th of next month. i dig her voice... not bad on the eyes either!
