The fourth category 5 hurricane that's hit the United States in modern records is going to hit New Orleans... It has been noted that the entire city could be under 20-30 feet of water...

Discuss.

Shouldn't build your city near a body of water at or below sea-level. Ask Venice.

It's been described as a soup bowl, with bodies of water on each side that are at a elevation higher than the city itself.

4.5 million people live in New Orleans. 10% of people do not have transportation to leave. Others dont have money. There are many tourists on bus tours that have NO way to leave.

An estimated 100,000 people will remain in the city. 40,000-60,000 casulties could be expected. The superdome is 12 ft under sea level and is one of the highest points in the city. They are opening it up for those left behind.

I think only around 1,000 people died on 9-11....

According to a few drunk citizens partying on bourbon st, the storm that's on scale to be in the top 2 biggest storms to strike the united states is just a plot formed by the media to rob new orleans of tourism. Apparently, satellite images, wind and power measurements, the city being below sea level and having water on all sides is just part of the scheme.

Max Mayfield, director of the U.S. National Hurricane Center, described Katrina as a "perfect" hurricane. It had grown into a Category 5 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson, with winds near 165 mph (270 kph) just before 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) on Sunday, the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Katrina was about 150 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River and heading northwest at 13 mph (21 kph). Hurricane force winds could be felt 105 miles out from the center.

Katrina had a central pressure -- a measure of a storm's intensity -- of 902 millibars, which would make it one of the four strongest storms on record. The Labor Day hurricane of 1935 that hit the Florida Keys, killing some 600 people, was the strongest with a minimum central pressure of 892 millibars on landfall.

"The lower the pressure, the stronger the winds and that is exactly what is happening here with Katrina," Mayfield told

CNN.

Party's over in the French Quarter

It takes a mean, mean storm to shut down the hurricane party at Molly’s at the Market, but Katrina did it, at about 6 p.m. Sunday.
The French Quarter bar, notorious for staying open during hurricanes despite dire warnings and curfew calls, was the last in the French Quarter to close, said Jim Monaghan, Jr., owner of the bar at the corner of Ursulines and Decatur streets.
“I thought about it long and hard,” he said. “But I don’t want 100 people in here if something happens.”
In the past, the bar has remained open and usually chock full of regulars defying the storm and soothing their nerves with drink.
“We would have stuck it out if it was a category two or three, but there’s 175 mph winds out there, and I don’t want to be liable if somebody does something stupid in here tonight,” Monaghan said. “And there’s a bunch of drunks wandering around here.”
At nearby Cafe Lafitte, Tip Andrews knew it was time to leave when he saw the green shutters on the mustard-colored building close.
“When they close, you KNOW it’s bad,” the Bourbon Street resident said Sunday as he took his two dogs, Gigi and Dijon, for a last walk before heading north. “They NEVER board up.”
The sickly sweet “hurricane” punch drinks that normally flow right up until landfall were nowhere to be seen as city workers did a last sweep of spent plastic cups and party debris. Purple, green and gold balloons fluttered forlornly on gas lamps in front of shuttered bars in the growing afternoon breeze.
“Where’s everybody going?” Edward Heyman shouted along an empty street. “It’s just a little storm.”
But despite his bravado, Heyman was leaving, too.

I mean no disrespect to the inhabitants of New Orleans, but maybe, just maybe folks will re-think the fact that:

a) Don’t build a city below sea-level bordered on 3 sides by- water.
b) Don’t stuff petro and chemical plants and storage into said bowl
c) Leave areas like this (which should serve as a big frekin’ drain filter for the Mississippi region) alone for mother nature.

It simply makes no sense to have a metropolis in THAT location.

So is anybody keeping track of this today? From what I've gathered across various websites, currently:

- Downtown New Orleans is under FIFTEEN FEET of water?! And still rising.
- There are 2 different breaches in the levvy system, 2 blocks wide each.
- The French quarter, some of the highest ground in the area, is now knee-deep in floodwaters.
- They plan on dropping 3000-lb sandbags into the levvy breaches by helicopter to stop the flow of floodwaters.
- Looting is rampant.

Looks like that pic that BATMAN posted may turn out to be all too accurate. :(
