Avoid foreign produce. Wash and peel your fruit. Keep it refrigerated. None of these common tips would have guaranteed your safety from the deadliest food outbreak in a decade, the one involving cantaloupes from Colorado.
Whether it’s sprouts or spinach, turkey or hamburger; whether the government doubled, tripled or quadrupled inspections, the truth is that no food will ever be completely free of risk. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/killer-cantaloupe-scary-sprouts-no-food-is-totally-safe-but-you-can-reduce-your-risk/2011/09/29/gIQAAP5B8K_story.html

Can you get listeria if you didnt actually eat the cantaloupe, but just put holes in it and had extended contact for about 10-15 minutes?
Just saying, I'm a little worried.

Yes its possible to get sick by just touching cantaloupe with listeria, always keep your hands clean. Many people do get sick from not washing hands.
