What do you guys know about the old air cooled vw beetles?
I know they are not fast, (what 40hp?) but they've been around forever, so they must be reliable? Or am i wrong? I hear they get good gas mileage, but there again, dont really know.
I have a friend that bought one for 500bucks, and it runs good, some rust, but overall is a good car. Was that a good deal, or do they usually sell that cheap? If they do break down, are parts cheap? thanx, josh.

Well they were designed by Ferdinand Porsche which should say a lot. I've heard rumors that there were actually a few VW's with Porsche engines in them but these would probably be quite old today. Regardless the design is very good for an economical car (which is what it was designed to be).

Actually alot of air cooled Porsche engines will fit into bugs with only minor mods. Old VW engines are very reliable and super cheap to work on. It's also easy to make them pretty quick too if you know how to work on engines. An old VW bug with a turbo and a stroker kit would spank most cars around here at the strip no problem.
