I met my wife online...on a MMROPG to be exact (no, not WoW; an online text-based mafia-style game). This started around Nov./Dec '06. She was being picked on and I was one of the strongest in the game. I got the bully to leave her alone and we began talking frequently after that. Soon it became talking everyday through MSN and webcam, and eventually, we talked by phone. Due to the time difference(she is in CA;I was in PA) and having separate carriers, nights and weekends didn't help much and we both ran up $300 phone bills each. To remedy this, she created a family plan and sent me my own phone so all our calls would be free.

Then we decided we should finally meet. At the end of Feb. '07, she bought me a plane ticket to fly out and I paid for the hotel. And as corny as this sounds, it was love at first sight. We had such a good time together, I wound up missing my flight home and stayed an extra 4 days.

As soon as I got home, I was determined to be with her. I told my roommate I was leaving early on my lease, I put in 2 weeks at my job and I withdrew my 401k. By May '07, I moved in with her and I've never been happier. We then married on June 7, 2008. I have no regrets and she has made me such a better person, I could ever imagine living without her again.

Long story short, while there are some psychos on the interwebs, but you might get lucky. I'm living proof.

Trust and communication are key, but all the other little matters to it (paying for travel to see each other, planning out when you can, etc.) are the things that will wear on you with time.

It's doable, and the reward of being together after your distance issues is pretty intense. But honestly, I would suggest avoiding them if at all possible unless you're POSITIVE you have the patience and time to invest. Just don't get tunnel vision because someone from far away was the first to get your attention, is all.

back on topic, I don't think it's a black & white issue.. I think some 'online' relationships can be stronger, more valid relationships than a lot of real life ones.
