I'm debating this with a friend that pretty much believes that bigger is better.

He's all about the 18 and 19" rims for the NSX and M3.

I beg to differ.

There was some publication years ago that adressed this and concluded that 16" rims are the best from the lowest track times.

it was tested on the same car with the same tire width. Only difference was the wheel diameter and respective sidewall profiles.

But I need some proof.

Help me out....

for some reason i got a big sense of deja vu
wasn't this topic created and discussed already?

lighter is better
diameter larger than necessary is pretty pointless, except for looks

if we ignore about problems with commonly available tire sizes, wheel sizes, big sidewalls, speedometer etc.,

then, the best diameter would potentially be the smallest diameter that still clears your hardware (brakes, in particular), because it minimizes unnecessary weight in the wheel.

sometimes, bigger just looks rediculous. like those 20's seen on the older Chevrolet Chevelle and Olds Cutlass i see running around here. hopefully they thought to upgrade the brakes on them to help stop all that rotating mass.
