So.....I am just north of Portland for the week, anyone have anything interesting I should be doing on my nights off?

Hopefully I''ll make it to Mt St Helens...

I went to a pretty cool waterfall right outside of Portland when I was working up there years ago. I think it was called Horsetail Falls or something like that.

Maryhill, WA, there is a stonehenge just outside of the city limits

Seaside, OR, big tourist area on the beach

Mt St Helens (obvious)

Mt Hood is somewhere around there

If you felt like taking an all-day/weekend trip up north, I can give you plenty of sight seeing places to go to. I don't know too much in or around the Portland area, but I could give you a whole list of things in Washington.

Oh, I forgot to add in some info about Mt St Helens.

There are two routes that you can take to get to a lookout for the mountain, Windy Ridge and Spirit Lake Hwy #504. The route to Windy Ridge is closed though due to roadway washout from the major flooding/rain we had in 2006, so you will have to take Spirit Lake Hwy to get anywhere close to the mountain.

If you are into mild spelunking, the Ape Caves are at the southern entrance to the mountain. The caves were old lava tunnels from whenever the mountain was heavily volcanically active. Flashlights/headlamps, and warm clothing that you don't mind getting dirty are a necessity, even in the dead of the summer heat. Also, there are two different routes in the caves, the "easy" and "hard." Whenever you go down the "stairs" and you find yourself at the bottom of the "stairs," the easy route will be directly in front of you and the harder route is under the "stairs," you'll know what I am talking about when you see it. The easy route just goes down about 3/4 of a mile and just ends. The harder route, which I haven't done, goes about 2 miles with lots of belly crawling to an exit point. There is a trail from the exit that will take you back to the parking lot.

One more thing, I don't know what sort of transportation you have, but the roads out there are perfect for a sport bike or a car with a sporty nature. I have taken my GTI out that way a few times and it is a blast! Long sweeping curves, tight hairpins, switchbacks, a very technical roadway that will leave you smiling. Just be mindfull of the cracks in the road as the roadway can be uneven (this is more of a problem if you follow the eastern to northern route around the mountain).

Oh yeah, and it costs for a day pass, but you can pick up one at any major parking lot (I know the Ape Caves lot has passes to pick up). Doesn't cost much, between $5-$10 (I don't remember specifically), so bring some cash.

Yeah, you came into the area at a bad time. At the moment, the whole PNW is stuck in it's 300 days of grey. Come back late spring or during the summer when the rain and grey has stopped, it's spectacular.

There's some sick sick sick whitewater in oregon. Go pickup a good creek boat and bomb down some waterfalls.

You're going to need a dry-suit to hit the rapids at the moment.
