The Roman Catholic pope has come under renewed criticism after saying that condoms are not the solution to Africa's HIV epidemic.

Pope Benedict XVI made the remarks as he started a seven-day tour of the continent on Tuesday.

An estimated 22 million people in Africa have HIV, the virus that leads to Aids.

Three-quarters of all Aids deaths in 2007 were in sub-Saharan Africa.

"You can't resolve it [Aids] with the distribution of condoms," the pope said. "On the contrary, it increases the problem."

It is the first time that Benedict has addressed the issues of condom use. Pope John Paul II, his predecessor, often said that sexual abstinence - not condoms - was the best way to prevent the spread of the disease.

Condoms or no condoms, people are still going to have sex. Sure, the "possibility" that condoms will prevent one from contracting STDs will promote that sex occurs more often... but discarding condoms won't stop people from having sex. The people that still have sex just won't have any measurement of protection now. You're robbing Peter to pay Paul.

It's a general question of which will do the least damage, except there's no way to measure it, not even hypothetically. If people want to fuck, let them fuck. Who cares, unless you're fucking them? I think a lot of my friends sex-lives is plain disgusting, but I don't give a shit... I'm not fucking them, nor am I fucking anyone they fuck.

There's consequences for shit you do, and there's measure you can take in your sex-life to have better shots at not contracting something--condoms are one of these measures. Selective partners is probably the most influential, but the combination of both will give you much better shots than the person that isn't practicing either.

You know, I've got a friend that on average, fucks a new girl every week. He's cheated on every girl he's dated multiple times, and is currently fucking 3 people that I know of right now. All of these girls are comfortable with this, and comfortable with the just friends with benefits deal, so I assume they're probably fucking other people too. This kinda networks into a pretty big web... somewhere along the line, someone might get a little more than they wanted, and it's going to travel down the line.

If you have sex, you're gambling.

People are also going to drink and drive. We should make drunk driving lanes for these people, maybe even construct roads that are just for them.

Let me make it clear that I am not against the use of condoms. However, what I am against is this idea that the pope should "get with the times" and undercut the very principles of the Catholic Church. Use condoms, just don't cry about the fact that the pope isn't giving you the thumbs up for it.
