Alternatively, I also thought it might be a knock sensor kicking it off due to bad gas or a failing low oil sensor. Any thoughts on that theory?

Cosby 09-25-2008, 07:59 PM So I bought a generator off craigslist. Worked fine for 5 hours or so and started to stall. Now it will run for a couple minutes and shut down. Subsequently it seems to run for less and less. There is a sensor on the side of the generator. If I disconnect the sensor it will not shutdown. If I reconnect it after a certain amount of time, it will immediately shut down. This sounds like a temp sensor to me. So here's the question.... how the F do you stop a generator from overheating? Could I have put the wrong kind of gas in? Is there anything at all I can do? Alternatively, I also thought it might be a knock sensor kicking it off due to bad gas or a failing low oil sensor. Any thoughts on that theory? J_R 09-25-2008, 08:01 PM What kind of generator is it? Are you overloading it? Herschel 09-25-2008, 08:09 PM Did you check the oil level? A lot of gens have a cut off switch for when they're low on oil. Past that, I would say it's a flux capacitor problem..... Supper 09-25-2008, 08:11 PM If it is a Honda that is the oil level sensor. They regularly fail on older models. fcdrifter13 09-25-2008, 08:17 PM What kind of generator is it? Are you overloading it? Ding ding, winar. If you unplug the oil lvl sensor on some models they will not run at all though. Check oil lvl then try again. Animal 09-25-2008, 11:01 PM yep, LOL sensor. (Low Oil Level). wotnartd 09-25-2008, 11:23 PM It's your low oil sensor. Steel 09-26-2008, 02:15 AM I have absoultley no idea, but I'll jump on the bandwagon and say its the oil level sensor too. 95whitepep 09-26-2008, 05:08 AM Headlight fluid?
