A claim of theft against an Eau Claire woman, police say, turned into prostitution-related charges for both the woman and the man who accused her of the theft.
Stephanie M. Edwards, 33, 822 Evergreen St., and David A. Klumby, 49, 308 1/2 E. Madison St., were charged this week in Eau Claire County Court.
Edwards faces misdemeanor counts of theft and prostitution while Klumby is charged with a misdemeanor count of pandering.
Edwards is free on a $100 signature bond and returns to court July 1. Klumby did not appear for his initial court hearing, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
According to the criminal complaint:
Klumby called police April 13 to report that Edwards left his residence after taking his jeans and wallet containing $500 to $600. Klumby said he was going to have sex with Edwards after she told him he would have to pay her $20 to have sex.
Klumby told police he paid Edwards for sex on previous occasions. He later retracted that statement and said she would perform services for him and he would give her items such as beer.
Klumby said he allowed Edwards to stay with him from time to time and that she was required to have sex with him in order to stay at his residence.
Police returned to Klumby's residence 12 days later and found both Klumby and Edwards there. Klumby said Edwards returned his wallet but not the money.
Police asked Klumby why he continued to allow Edwards to stay with him, and he replied that he was "a sucker.
