Finally found a place that rents engine hoists out here in the sticks, so I'm going to yank the motor and transmission from the FB on Saturday. I'm going to take every single thing out of the engine bay and wire wheel it all down to bare metal. Then, it's getting the POR-15 treatment.

I still haven't decided what motor to go with: I've thought about the good ol' T2 swap with a megasquirt, a V6 with a 6 speed, a 5L Ford motor... I'd love to do an NA 20B, but that's probably just too pricey for me. In the meantime, I'm going to do everything I can to get the chassis, suspension and interior done so the motor can go right in.

Now, I have a question for you guys: The FB is an 84. I've had the gas tank out of the car, and the fuel pickups in the tank look like they'd swap out with the pickups from an FC, meaning I could put in an FC (or most likely, a walbro) pump. I know I'd need to change the fuel lines to withstand the kind of pressure fuel injection would need, but has anyone done anything like this, or do I need to hunt down a GSL-SE fuel tank?

I dont think the FB tank has baffles, I would almost bet my check on it. I think that is one of the things that has to be addressed when turboing an FB and crossing it.

All years?

are your line pressures really going to be that high with N/A? I would just replace the lines and call it good...however, with that old of a tank I would definitely drain it and inspect for corrosion, esp if it has baffles

The tank has been drained for 3 years.

Remember, the lines on an 84 are for a carb with fuel pressures around 6 psi. Fuel injection pressure is a lot more than that, which is why FI fuel hose is so much more expensive than non FI hose.

Like I said, I'm really considering an Ebay S5 T2 motor and tranny. It would probably be the easiest swap to get done.

All years?

As far as I know, all FB tanks were the same. The tank from my 84 does, and the 83 tank I'm replacing it with, does as well.

For the record, the POR-15 tank treatment kit isn't as easily as they make it sound.

Nah, I wasn't going braided, I was just going to change the hoses to the FI stuff.

Sitting for three years is a recipe for disaster. Get a new/gently used one.

I'm painting the engine bay with POR-15, as well as the suspension pieces, rear-end, etc. Just so it stays rust free. Never heard of a tank treatment kit.

I have a carbed 302 in my basement, but it needs a rebuild, and all I have for a tranny is a 4 speed manual.

you should build that thing!

Pick up a T5 or neck snapping AOD and call it a day.

Cheap as hell, simple and fast.

The only problem is, I don't know how to build that thing. At all. In any way, shape or form.

EDIT: And, I'd really like to save it for the 'vert, because the 'vert could really use the torque.

That motor I posted a pic of is based on the 302 block.

I've never rebuilt a piston engine either. But I doubt they get much easier than a 302.

T2 in the vert would be cooler IMO.

I think the chevy 4.3 is the only one grannys makes a kit for.

Typically I dislike all v6's

Why? Many vehicles now come with 300+ horse v6's.

If I was going to do a V6, it would be the 4.3L Chevy.

Although, this would be cool as fuck:

It's easy to get 300 hp and 300 ft-lbs from a 4.3L. Hook it to a T-56, and you have an awesome car.

However, I'll probably just do a T2 swap, because that's the easiest. I'd like to get the car on the road sometime in the next year.

Lexus, Nissan and Honda are getting 300+ from the 3.5s they build. Look at the new Mazda 6, 272 HP 269 Ft/lbs of torque - 3.7 litre. The V6 will be the new V8 of the future, you can bet on that.

I found a 4.3L V6 from a FI S-10 pickup for $300. Now, I need a tranny!

Oh, and for the record: 5.7L Chevy pistons, rings, etc are interchangeable into the 4.3L. So, I could do a low compression build for a turbo setup if I want. :)

My .02 on SBF's...

1: A 347 is going to burn oil, and add something to be watched. A 331 won't... 331 is a much better choice if you're going to go FI.
2: I'd stay away from carb, but use all the EFI stuff from a fox mustang, mass-air car.
3: If you're going to buy one, I'd buy from MMR-http://www.modularmustangracing.com/

A 302 with cobra heads/intake ($500 in GOOD condition), cam, long tubes/x-pipe, bolt-ons will give you all the joy you want in an s4. The powerband isn't really geared towards high rpms, but the torque will put a smile on your face.

I used it and it seems to have worked ALRIGHT. A bubble did form and tear under the '15, however. And there is still some rust somewhere, so I bit the bullet and bought an Oklahoma tank. No rust, clean as a whistle. Just got to install it.

The POR-15 stuff I have used has all been top notch. I'm planning on just doing undercarriage with it, that's it. I'd rather get a new fuel tank than dick around with that stuff.

Once I get money, I'll start prepping the underside for POR-15. Probably when I upgrade everything, though. It'll be easier to prep off the car.

I'm taking the car apart one section at a time and stripping it to bare metal with a twisted wire wheel on an angle grinder. Yes, it's disgusting, filthy, time consuming, etc, but it's also cheap and gets it done nicely.

These are the wire wheels I use:

No sure if you got your gas question answered but here's what I did.

You have to modify the tank to accept the FC unit and swap in the FC baffle. Pretty much cut the top of the tank and weld in the FC mounting flange and tack weld the baffle to the bottom of your tank.

With the lines... the metal line on the FB is fine, for the return find another FB main line and just replace the original return line. Replace all hoses with ones rated for FI and your good.

I got this info from Steve84GSL-SE or something like that, and did it on mine for my SR20DET swap.

Sounds like I'm better off with a GSL-SE fuel tank, or running an external FI fuel pump.

I would run an external pump. Seems way easier. Like holy crap wow, I just saved a ton of money by switching to Geico.
