I don't know if this has been discussed before, but, oh well.

Has anyone here smoked for a significant period of time and quit succesfully?

I've smoked for about seven years now and I'm really tired of spending the money and feeling like crap when I go to run, therefore I'm embarking on my quitting journey today. Does anyone have any helpful tips to move this along?

lots of gum and candy. Thats how I quit. Then if I really was craving the nicotine I would chew...but that stuff is nasty, and well it helped me get off the cravings....just dont get hooked on that stuff.

Good luck...smoking sux...and your going to gain about 10 pounds too.

Have you, or anyone else for that matter, ever tried the Nicorette gum or maybe the patches?

I was reading about the way Nicotine is put through the body and it seems that it's supposed to be "all gone" within a few weeks. After reading that it made me think twice about just putting more of it (Nicotine) in my body through a patch or a piece of gum whenever I am craving.

Yeah, chew is really disgusting and it's a good two to three dollars more than a pack of cigarettes up here (we're at about six dollars a pack in WA state). That sounds like it would be a good plan though.

Thanks for the advice, keep it coming everyone!

Ex-Smoker for 20 years here. get the patch. Gona be a year after Jan 1st. It was my third real attempt. Now I feel like I can kick YZF's ass, im so healthy!

It was my third attempt.
each time I went back to smoking was when I lit up thinking I wouldn't want to smoke another.
Good fucking luck.

Man, well, congratulations. I remember having heard someone say that "if you've smoked for any extended period of time, you're going to be quitting the rest of your life". How's the patch work for you, does it actually help to control cravings and what-not?

If only Mel Gibson hadn't looked so badass while he was shooting that crazed sniper in the school window, I probably wouldn't have bought my first pack at age 12 (they're sold in vending machines in Japan still).

patch works great. Get the 'three step' process. When you finally are done, you 'will' feel nicotine craving but not so bad. And the habit of reaching for a cig is gone.

It's mental just like any other addiction.

When it comes down to it, you're either strong-willed and in control of yourself or you're being controlled. That's the decision you've gotta make. If you truly decide to quit, you won't need gum, or any other shit. Determination is ALL you need to do ANYTHING in life.

If you wanna do it, go fuckin' do it.

You might want to check to see if there are free state programs for the patches and gum...

Colorado has a quit program that will suppy you with patches...heck its free....why not try?

correct!

You'll find your health insurance also 'PAY YOU' to quit. Check with them.

It's a big bart mental, but there is also a huge physical addiction. Which has been proven time and time again.

I've been smoking nearly constantly for eigth years. I would really like to quite, but it's very very hard. My best was nearly a year without.

I've had the gum, the patch the inhaler, the "wellbutrin like" perscriptions. and none have worked permanently for me.

It takes a big time health scare before many people are serious enough to quite. I hope to pull if off before i'm among that group.

Good luck.

resigning yourself to death can be easier than quiting for some.

Just like meth trash etc......

No not really insane....its quite common.

Take for instance the World Trade Center. The people who jumped off chose to end their life on their own resolve. They saw the flames, smoke and decided that they wanted to kill themselves on their terms when faced with the choice....so they jumped. They took control of their own death.

Addictions can be just as bad. When faced with quiting, especially hardcore drug users, some would rather choose death than come clean. Its the same mind set.

BTW, how about showing a little support. Be the lighthouse YZF, dang dude...say a prayer for they guy, help him try to quit.

I swear your bring this onto yourself...no wonder why you cry a flood about respect.

Lots of exercise is supposed to be good once you get out of the first few days. It gives your brain something new to latch onto. I suppose you could sub in candy or hoagies, if you wanted...

The CDC encourages young smokers to call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or seek help from a health professional to determine the most appropriate method for them.

I love MO. Nearly every gas station is a full blown liquor store..........
