TJGoSurf 04-26-2008, 01:26 PM Anyone know about how much the repair bill for a 96 DSM N/T with a snapped timing belt will be? wonner 04-26-2008, 01:30 PM $600 TJGoSurf 04-26-2008, 01:33 PM ^ Is that an accurate number? And does it include the person trying to start it? wonner 04-26-2008, 02:50 PM No, I guessed. :D AteTuna 04-26-2008, 03:01 PM Is it an interference engine? wotnartd 04-26-2008, 10:32 PM From what I'm seeing, it looks like it's an interference engine. So that means money. rtryb2200 04-26-2008, 10:41 PM do it yourself and save some $$$ Alex-7 04-26-2008, 10:46 PM find a used/rebuilt head and buy a new timing belt. Shouldn't be more than a couple hundred bucks and a Sunday of your time. I'm sure it'd be about a thousand bucks if you pay a shop. wotnartd 04-26-2008, 10:50 PM If it is noninterference, you are totally fine, buy a new belt get the motor back to TDC and put it back together (15 minutes for the Tracer). If not, well... there's a good chance your engine at a valve, or several. How you'd find out, I do not know. Vert8813B 04-27-2008, 10:38 AM You will know right away if the piston hit a valve. All DSM engines are interference engines. If it were a Subaru, you would be golden. wotnartd 04-27-2008, 10:41 AM You will know right away if the piston hit a valve. All DSM engines are interference engines. If it were a Subaru, you would be golden. I suppose the time spent doing a timing belt isn't too bad, just to further damage the engine. What I don't get is why all engines are not noninterference engines. It just seems like a really good idea. wotnartd 04-27-2008, 10:43 AM I know a decent amount (if not all) Ford motors are noninterference. Hondas, are a no. Mazdas are a go, as are Toyota, and Subaru (new to me). There's got to be a list somewhere. Found a list: http://www.familycar.com/carcare/GatesFrame.htm TJGoSurf 04-27-2008, 12:36 PM find a used/rebuilt head and buy a new timing belt. If they're sound it should be good. But I'm lazy now, much easier to pay a guy I know. 1revnrex 04-27-2008, 12:47 PM Pistons will be fine, valves will be bent (some). I bought a 98 Neon Sport that snapped a timing belt from a guy that had a new water pump and timing belt put on by a "reputable" mechanic. Well when he started the car it ran on two cylinders and he gave up on it. I bought it for 300 and put another 300 into it and I have been driving it for around 2 and a half years now. 1revnrex 04-27-2008, 12:50 PM What I don't get is why all engines are not noninterference engines. It just seems like a really good idea. Exactly. How much extra time/money would it take to mill valve reliefs into the fucking pistons? It doesnt make any sense other than more money in repairs to be made. wotnartd 04-27-2008, 02:20 PM It's ridiculous. I mean, when I had to tear apart my tracer, I was like, "Gee, self, that's some brilliant engineering, just enough relief for an open valve to not get pinged, why doesn't everyone do it?" Whatever the case may be, it would probably be an easy fix. If you can find a cheap head, go that way, otherwise a valve job is good, too. My Tracer was on stands for 9 days, I think. 5 of them was the new head being shipped and machined. it's pretty easy if you can read a Haynes manual. Cosby 04-27-2008, 03:47 PM 700 dollars or so Tofuball 04-27-2008, 09:16 PM Exactly. How much extra time/money would it take to mill valve reliefs into the fucking pistons? It doesnt make any sense other than more money in repairs to be made. That is not all that is involved :) Some cars have so much lift in the cams vs so little room in the chamber that to 'mill valve reliefs' would send the valve deep into the piston, and instead of dished you'd end up with a bathtub :P 1revnrex 04-27-2008, 09:39 PM That is not all that is involved :) Some cars have so much lift in the cams vs so little room in the chamber that to 'mill valve reliefs' would send the valve deep into the piston, and instead of dished you'd end up with a bathtub :P Yah I know thats not all thats involved. Stroke, Valve Lift/Duration. Quite a few factors. TJGoSurf 05-02-2008, 03:16 PM Total is going to be $1485 to replace whats broken. Fucking DSM's. wotnartd 05-02-2008, 03:19 PM Holy shit! Piston gnaw a valve? When the Tracer's head cracked, I put out $415 to repair it all. Of course, I did my own work, which saved me around $600. You'd be better off getting some beater car than repairing a DSM. dano670 05-02-2008, 03:33 PM Ouch, that is painful. How many bent valves? 91lx 05-02-2008, 10:46 PM You will know right away if the piston hit a valve. All DSM engines are interference engines. If it were a Subaru, you would be golden. On a WRX, more than likely it will bend valves. You might get lucky. Vert8813B 05-02-2008, 11:26 PM Yeah not all Subarus are Non. Many are though. TJGoSurf 05-03-2008, 03:14 PM Ouch, that is painful. How many bent valves? Just one cylinder has no compression. 91lx 05-03-2008, 06:21 PM Can get a whole engine for less than that. 4G63-Eclipse 90-94, NonTurbo DOHC HP: 160 @ 6000 $550 4G63T-Eclipse 90-94, Turbo DOHC HP: 210 @ 6000 $1,450 6G72-NonTurbo HP:n/a $950 6G72TT-Twin Turbo HP:n/a $2,400 TJGoSurf 05-03-2008, 06:26 PM Well being that I don't have a 4g63 or a 6g72. It would be around $500 for a used engine. Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a new head. It will be around 850 to put a used head on. And if I had a 4g63 I wouldnt be having this problem since getting at the timing belt in one of those is so much easier than a 420a. Fucking chrysler. |
