Rouged, rough and ready: Women bring tough, feminine attitudes to resurgence of roller derby
(AP) 03:47:21 PM (ET), Thursday, October 1, 2009 (ST. PAUL, Minn.)
Women's roller derby is making a comeback. But it's not the version that was a fixture on TV in the 1960s and '70s.

Instead of the pro-wrestling theatrics of old-school roller derby, the new skaters bring a tough, yet feminine attitude of pride and independence.

They wear lipstick and tattoos and go by names like "Kim Jong Kill" as they race around in circles crashing into each other while the crowd cheers.

A new movie, "Whip It," is directed by Drew Barrymore and stars Ellen Page of "Juno" fame as a teen who takes up the sport. It opens nationwide Friday.

One roller derby league, called the Minnesota RollerGirls, averaged just over 3,000 fans a bout last season.
