87-88 bolts up and uses the same plug but the 89-91 alternators use different connectors. You can modify your cars wiring in order to use the 89-91 alternator you just have to come across the plug for the alternator.

87-88 is a 70 amp alt and I believe the 89-91 alt is 90 amps or higher?

S4 (1986-1988) is 70 Amps. Plug n play, bolt up, almost (I think a new bolt adn nut need to be sourced or add some washers as a spacer or something

S5 (1989-1991) is 80 Amps. It is NOT Plug n play. There is a different plug, but the main thing that needs to be changed is there is an ignition switched wire on the plug. It needs to be changed to Battery + so that it's hot all the time. Reason being that this wire controls the regulator. When it detects the voltage is lower than the battery voltage (At the large wire) it attempts to charge the battery. With the engine not running, this will obviously NOT charge that battery, but drain it.

FD alternator is same as S5. It is 90 amps, however many have been tested up to 130 Amps.

50 or 55.. it's stamped on the alternator in your car.

Depending what electronics you have, anything over 70 is good enough.

Bull. Amps are like chicks at a party. The more the merrier.

You don't have to get at ALL of them, but it's nice to know that there's enough to go around should you need to add load.

79-83 were 50 amp
84-85 55 amp

I started with a 55...it broke, moved on to a S4 70 amp, one year later it broke, now i'm on a 50 amp from my parts car :(

I installed a S4 alt in my 83 and it goes right in without any extra spacers or anything like that. I used the one that was on it originally. The extra 15 amps helped out a bit (have 85 motor).
