KatakanaKarl 02-20-2006, 10:01 PM So I get the crave for some Rum & Coke today. I drive down to the local ABC store to get some Captain Morgan, and when I get to the checkout, the lady says if I like Captain, I'll like this even more:

Sailor Jerry Spiced Navy Rum. It's pretty close to Captain Morgan, and it costs $1.00 more a bottle, but it's 92 proof instead of 70 proof.
Well, it's 3/4 of a bottle later, and I think I'll never buy Captain Morgan again. This rum is really good. It has a bit more bite to it, and it gets you drunk faster. All for a buck more a bottle. That lady at the ABC store knows her stuff.
Anyone here ever had this stuff before? If not, I highly recomend it. Top notch stuff it is.
I guess it's about time to finish off the bottle...
FSURedFD 02-21-2006, 05:47 AM This is the second time I'm hearing about this stuff. I'm an avid fan of The Captain so I guess I really need to try this stuff out.
$100T2 02-21-2006, 10:46 AM Never heard of it, but I'll look for it next time I'm at the package store... I'm good friends with Pete Morgan (that's the Captains' first name, if you didn't know), so I'll try the other stuff too.
$100T2 02-24-2006, 10:26 PM OK, I just got a bottle of this tonight, man, it is fucking good...
Mixed it with some Cherry Vanilla Coke, and damn. And, it was the same price as Captain Morgan.
KatakanaKarl 02-24-2006, 11:05 PM Yes, it is so good. I'm going to pick up another bottle next monday, to help welcome the new week.
As for tonight, I got me a bottle of this to close out the current week:

Chimay Grande Reserve Trappist Ale. Brewed by the Cistercian Monks at the Notre-Dame de Scourmont abbey in Belgium. 9% ABV, and damned good. All the profit from the ale goes to the upkeep of the abbey, as well as many charitable works. Woot for getting drunk for charity.
Also, woot for the Sam Adams Double Bock, which just became available here in NC. We had a law until last year that rendered all beer above 6% ABV illegal (while Everclear, 95% ABV, WAS legal for some stupid reason). Now that law is gone, and I can get all the fancy doppelbocks, quadruppels, imperial russian stouts, and barleywines that were previously unavailable.
T-Minus 10 years and counting 'till I die of cirrhosis.
rtryb2200 02-25-2006, 12:12 AM tonight I am drinking Korbel and cokes new high sugar high caffeine soda VAULT

Seriously.
Those monks live by REALLY strict guidlines. Pretty much, all they do is work (make beer and cheese, and other products) and pray. They're vegetarians, have very few worldy possessions, and almost never speak unless necessary.
And I thought the Franciscans were hardcore, LOL.
As far as beer goes, the Trappist Ales of Belgium are widely considered by many experts to be the finest in the world.
After having Rochefort, Chimay, and Westmalle, I think I'm going to agree with the experts on this one.
One of these days, I'm going to have to take a trip to Belgium, to go to the Westvleteren abbey. Their beer is only available at the abbey, and they make folks promise not to resell it for profit. Therefor, it is nearly impossible to find it anywhere outside of Belgium.
One of their brews, the #12 yellow cap, is rated #1 beer in the world by both Beer Advocate and RateBeer.com. They sell it for around 25 euros a case, which is a damned good price when you look at other "premium" beers sold here in the states. Hell, Rochefort goes for $6.00 a BOTTLE around here.
I'll stay for a week, seeing the sights and whatnot, and make a stop at the abbey once a day to pick up a case (they only sell one case per person at a time). Then all I'll have to do is find a way to get 5 cases of beer back into the states.
Maybe I can convince customs that it's for personal consumption...
