2ndGen.rocket came up with the idea of uploading a song that you like and sharing it on the forum. Anyone can upload a music file, whether you own an account or not. Simply use megaupload or rapidshare and you can do so for free.

I'll get this thing started.

Rob Zombie: Never Gonna Stop
http://rapidshare.com/files/35654837/04_-_Never_Gonna_Stop.mp3

Check this one out, even if you don't like Rob Zombie (neither do I really) but this song is pretty cool.

Ok Here we go:

Stick To Your Guns-Poor Mans Poor Sport

Not for the weak at heart! This is Orange County hardcore. I met the guitarist of this band at a bar called Paul's in Orange County last summer. His brother incidentally was friends with one of my friends as well. Either way, the bar kicked ass, and so does this band. Vocals are standard hardcore, pretty much all screaming. The music kicks ass though, lots of very good rhythms. If you don't like hardcore metal, stay away.

Spitcan-Manifest
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WE7X4XQ9
Another metal group. These guys are from Wilkes-Barre, PA. My cousin is the lead singer of a successful metal band up there called Ninetail, and these guys frequently play together so my cousin turned me on to them. All around good metal, Pantera-like stomping riffs. They used to go by the name "Cyphillis" but ran into some copyright trouble.

Death From Above 1979- Blood On Our Hands
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F7RS9X8Z
You may have heard of DFA, or you might not have. If you haven't, you should. I don't care what type of music you listen to, you need these 2 DFA songs I am uploading. An all around excellent rock/prog/god knows what band. They consist of a bass player and a drummer. The drummer is also the lead singer. The bass player uses a pick and plays through a heavily distorted amp. They also released this album, a live album, and then broke up. The reason? They didn't think they could put out an album that tops this one, so they didn't want to be known for having a shitty album. Gotta respect em' for that.

Death From Above 1979-Romantic Rights
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=U31HSQ1G
Another one from these guys, really impressive bass guitar work going on throughout the the entire thing. If you liked the first song then you will definitely like this song.

Muse-Starlight
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FMRUTPFH
Muse has always been a very good band in my eyes. They are often accused of sounding too much like Radiohead, but I disagree. This song is off of their last album, and weirdly doesn't sound much like anything else on the album. There is a hint of Coldplay in this song, but I promise you it's not nearly as gay. There are some pretty rockin' parts of it. Either way, great tune.

Like before, let me know what you think, and if you want to hear more from any of these guys, let me know. I will put up another song tomorrow night. Sorry, got carried away here.

I never got a chance to see them either. My buddy I've talked about that writes for Vibe got the chance to hang out with these 2 guys one night in NYC, he said they are fucking nuts. Like literally, they were trying to smash barstools and stuff.

Ok a few more cause I'm bored. These 3 songs are from Kings of Leon. They are a band of young dudes from Tennessee, who started out in country but then decided they should play classic/hard rock. A few guys in the band are brothers, and their father was a travelling southern preacher. They put out their first album when they were like 18, and it was good but not that impressive. Their second and third albums however are mind blowing. "Four Kicks" and "Black Thumbnail" are great samples off of these 2 albums. The third song "Slow Night So Long" is a little slower, but no shit sounds like it was recorded in 1975. They have an amazing classic rock sound to them, and the lead singers voice is just grimey and gritty sounding. Again, if you remotely like music you should check them out.

Honeymoon Suite, The Big Prize: "Words In The Wind", "All Along You Knew"

Cool, mind uploading it?

cheesy name for a band but the entire CD is absolutely stellar, front to back....everything I find lacking in the wasteland of talent in 2007 is here: superb vocals and harmonies, no screaming, yelling, chanting, monotone 'singing", whispering, or rapping...wonderfully musical and uplifting

I would put Maynard James Keenan up against anyone of your metal singers. Vocally he would put them to shame. Something is only a wasteland if you choose to view it as such.

I'm a music snob, aside from the classical days, I grew up in rock's finest hours...they're gone forever

Gotcha, but try not to rag on anyone else's musical tastes in this thread, otherwise they might be hesitant to share.

Andy McKee is amazing. I've been trying to learn to play Drifting for a while now, I can make it through the first section, but haven't figured out the little breakdown after that. I've played guitar for years too, it's very difficult to play percussion and fret notes with your picking hand.

That is however what people your age said about Maiden during their heyday. Music runs in cycles, the older hate what the younger are listening to, and vice-versa.

I find that with most older bands, Iron Maiden included, the songs aren't very dynamic. Maybe shrill vocals are an acquired taste, I guess 4 minute guitar solos that go no where must also be acquired.

I am curious though, how does one objectively define "garbage"?

Animal

"Emo" is garbage.

Ark2
06-15-2007, 05:36 PM
Singing has never been Trent's bread and butter, never will be. There are a few songs where his singing is actually painful to listen to. What sets him above the rest is his song writing. Agree, disagree, whatever... I just think that it is ridiculous to say that music is garbage today while maintaining that this is of an unbiased opinion.

Ark2
06-15-2007, 05:55 PM
and that's totally different...I can respect that, but writing great songs doesn't make you a musician, at least not in my opinion (and I would think that opinion would be shared by most)

Huh? Doesn't make him a musician? The guy is basically a one man band, capable of playing all the instruments that you hear in his music, which is often what he does (not just synths mind you). This is a guy who has an uncompromising musical vision, one who sat out when TVT Records tried to control the direction of his music so that it would appeal to a larger audience (not something many artists would do so early in their careers). I would say that he is the epiotme of what it means to be a musician (and I would think that opinion would be shared by most).

based on a cross sectional review of musical value in 2007, judged by a hypothetical panel of educated musicians (certainly not me), I could predict with nearly 100% certainty there is basis in fact for that assessment

Interesting, do you have any links to this panel? I would be interested in reading about where they are coming from. Hopefully not just a bunch of over-the-hill artisits, singer/songwriters and producers yearning for the old days.

I think God would consider NIN junk, and Iron Maiden junk, to be honest...I always wonder what music in heaven will be like, but try to wrap your head around a choir with untold millions of angels singing PERFECTLY and you probably get a bit of a glimpse

I look forward to it

Heh, and here I am just looking forward to a new high-fidelity audio system. It sounds awesome though, hope I have the privilege of hearing it someday.

So you are telling me that your parents didn't think Iron Maiden was total trash?

I like what my parents listened to as well, but my parents listened to Zeppelin, Skynyrd, Steely Dan, Boston, etc. My mom still thinks Pantera is shitty music though. People generally reach a peak in their musical exploration and tolerance, at which point anything produced that strays outside of that is trash in their minds.

Ark2
06-16-2007, 04:53 PM
Exactly, that's what I've been trying to say to these guys. None of this hypothetical panel nonsense, there has never been a peak in musical quality. Period.

Ark2
06-16-2007, 05:02 PM
I'm not keen on a lot of mainstream music myself. From what I hear, it all seems so limp wristed and conventional. To give these bands a fair try though I would have to listen to their stuff, not just the odd song that's played on the radio. Since I'm not willing to do that, I tend to reserve jugdement.

I absolutely refuse to listen to anything from U2 though.

I don't pay attention to shit on the radio much at all, but I heard these guys the other day. They aren't original in any way, it's basically pop-punk I guess. I was just impressed with the lead singer. She's 18, has a pretty solid voice, and actually writes songs in an actual band. I saw a live video of her as well and she was pretty damn good. She's pretty cute as well.
