I just finished a competition today for my vocational school(Ben Franklin Technical) in Dunbar WV. The contest was to decide out of all the schools in the state which students would represent WV in the national competition in Kansas City later this June.

The contest was just a basic skills test consisting of a 50 ASE style questions, and 4 timed activities held in the shop which were made up of How to set-up a brake rotor on a brake lathe, measure for run-out, measuring the total thickness of the rotor and determining whether or not the rotor was suitable to be cut. The next part was the Use of a VAT-60 battery and vehicle load testing device and to demonstrate the 3 capabilities of the machine. The part after that was a pre alignment check which is basically a check of all the suspension components, bearings and tires. The last part was using 3 different types of scan tools, running them through the basic functions and adapting the connectors to each vehicle. We had an hour on the 50 question test, and 15 minutes at each station to do what as described above.

Out of the 30 contestants that participated I placed first overall in the state. My reward was a $12,000 scholarship to Ohio Technical College in Cleavland Ohio, a Snap-on True Tourqe tourqe wrench, and a mini mag lite. I will also be representing WV in Kansas city later this year and if by some chance I win there I go to the international competition in France.

Thanks guys, on the other forum a guy from Nebraska made the cut also, so I guess rotor heads are gonna rule the competition this year.

Not really any, anymore.

I grew up with video games

About a year ago I sold everything, because I decided I just didn't have the time for it.

Congrads. I went 6 years ago, bombed and came in 30th in the nation. The pinion depth and backlash kicked my ass, had a problem with the shitty drum brakes they had and enabling the diagnostic mode on the Lexus SUV, adjusting valve lash on a VTEC head, etc etc etc. About 20 stations and it will be over before you know it. Nice free trip.
