How do those things work? Like, how is the power transferred to the rear if the belt is the full width of the rear end? I've never seen one in person.

That "belt" is the track. It runs from the drive shaft to the rear bogie wheels. The wheels are attached to teh rails of your "skid" that also contain your hifaxes.

The drive shaft goes into a chaincase, with the large bottom gear attached to the drive shaft. The bottom gear is connected to the top gear via the HYVO chain. The small top gear is bolted directly to the jack-shaft that goes across the tunnel to the secondary clutch.

The secondary clutch is connected to the primary clutch via a drive belt, and the primary clutch is press fit to the crankshaft. (CVT baby!)

confused yet?

have most of the manufacturers converted to four stroke?

Yamaha has only 4 strokes...all the other manufacturers have them

Nah, most of em are still two stroke. Yamaha has a complete four stroke lineup, the Polaris has a single four stroke engine, same with Cat and Doo.

and holy shit oakback, where did you find that pic? Those sleds haven't been built in -years- and only a few hundred total were built. Good old Redline

word. not any new triples being manufactured, but there are a bunch of watercraft triples (polaris) being modded up into 1200+ cc two stroke triples.

There are even a few 1500+ two stroke triples in the works from a couple custom shops.

YZF,

The new "thing" is pump gas turbo's that'll run on 91 octane:

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj197/XC700116/59d695af.jpg

Can run up to 10 pounds of boost IIRC on 91. Go 50/50 you can run up to 14 pounds...

that sled is a 700cc twin and runs close to 200hp at 10,000 feet elevation.

here are some real world numbers:

7psi @ 7500+ elevation = 180hp
10psi @ 7500+ elevation = 200hp

But, the numbers change when you go from the ball bearing turbo Boondocker kits, to the Aerocharger kits, etc...
