This is the old shit. Our house was originally a two bedroom cape with the upstairs unfinished... So, when the second floor was finished, we turned the front bedroom into a family room. We threw a couple planks across the closet and put the kids toys and the TV in it temporarily. I put the cheesy little flip up board in front of the TV because my son loves to push buttons.

Project wise... I always have great ideas and I'm capable of doing it. Actually convincing myself to do something is hard though.

not bad.

I have a pretty cool one all CADed up, I just need to get around to purchasing the stainless steel I'm going to weld it out of and start working on it.

The pics are a little out of order, sorry... I framed in the closet with 2 x 4s, and designed doors that hinge open and push in on the top. The doors are 7 inches thick and double as DVD storage. Because our TV has built in DVD and VCR players, I don't have to worry about a mess of shit up top, but I will be building a shelf to go above the TV anyway. I am also going to build a compartment in one of the DVD storage shelves for my PS2. The bottom will have doors too, but will be mostly toy storage for the kids.

You know, the only reason I even thought about tackling this was because I bought all sorts of power tools this summer... Miter saw, table saw, drill press, etc, etc, etc... It's made the whole thing feasible.

I had to redo the goddamn sliding door system 5 times to get it lined up right.

I think i'll go pick up some lumber and start tomorrow if it isnt raining.

yeah its awesome. j/k before. you should get some subs under ground and have a vent so the bass can vent from underground. i gota find that shit its f'ing awesome. i wanted to do that but i never had the money for 4 12inch high end home theater subs. my cousin had 2 subwoofers in a box mounted on the ceiling of his basement and there was a vent that vented throught he ground of the living room floor. it sounded fucking awesome.

Here's one of the doors mounted, and I did shots of it mostly back, pulled forward a bit, and closed so you guys can see the action. I am going to cut a couple holes in the drywall so it will push all the way back flush with the wall.

Now, I'm going to go mount the other door, cut the shelves, and do the bottom door panels.

Oh yeah, and I have a trim piece to cover the three layers of wood where the TV goes, and I'm thinking of putting the TV on a bit of a slider too, so that it pulls out flush.

I want a scroll saw, but I have no idea what the fuck I'd use it for. This has taken me about 12 hours of work thus far... I'm sure someone who knew what the fuck they were doing could do it in less time... I'm no carpenter. But, it's fun, and it's too cold and rainy to go out and work on the cars, so it's my little hobby. If it works out, I have a couple cool ideas for some furniture for our room, so I might try that next.

Here it is with the two upper doors fitted and slid back. I put the TV in it just for show. As you can see, there is plenty of room if I want to move up to a bigger one, but for now, it's fine... I think it's a 35", but I honestly don't remember. I will be putting in some shelves above the TV, for the center channel speaker and the cable box, and the CD changer and surround sound receiver will be located in the lower bin on a shelf with a fold down panel over it so the kids can't fuck with it.

That would require me to go back downstairs, and if I do that, I will have to build the bottom doors, which I am trying to avoid doing until tomorrow.

I made a really simple but good looking entertainment stand for the corner of my living room.

The way the room was configured, there was a corner between the door to the kitchen and the door to the bedroom that was too small to do anything with other than having the TV there. I originally had one of those crappy stands with a cupboard beside the TV and shelves and cupboards beneath, but

1. put square against the wall it looked stupid
2. put on an angle it left a huge triangle of dead space between the rectangular stand and the corner
3. I hat those boxy 'temple to Television' stands and cupboards...

So I decided to tuck everything into that dead space. I started pricing out corner stands, but anything I liked was $799 plus (which I thought was ridiculous for cheap fibreboard with laminate)

SO I went to home depot and bought some MDF, 2" thick dowling, and a roll of brushed metal finish flashing. I had HD cut the MDF into three 2.5' x 2.5" squares. (Flashing is the roofing supply used to cover joints in your roof)

Took the materials home and cut the dowling into 6" lengths, except 3 chunks I kept at 24".

I cut the 3 squares diagonally, making 6 triangles. I cut off the 90 degree apex, about 3" deep, to make clearance for the cables.

I then screwed the dowling onto the bottom of each triangle, one piece at each corner. This made 6 shelves, 5 with 6" legs and 1 with 24" legs.

I cut the flashing to match the length of the diagonal, then took it into the machine shop my neighbour owned. He bent each piece with two 90 degree kerfs, making a facia that slips over the MDF 3/4" deep on the bottom, over the 3/4" face of the MDF, and going back about 5.5" on the top of each shelf.

SO now I have the shelves stacked in the corner, 4 short ones, the tall one, then 1 short one again. The TV goes in the tall space, obviously, and the VCR, DVD player, surround sound tuner, etc. on the rest of the shelves. Even though I used cheap building supplies it ended up costing about $30 total and has that blondewood-and-brushed-stainless Euro look.

that doesnt look like 35... looks more like a 27. get a new TV and stop buying rx7s.

11-22-2005, 03:40 PM
It very well could be. That TV is only 4 months old, and honestly, I only watch maybe an hour of TV a week, so I don't need anything more than that. It plays the kids DVDs and tapes, so that's what it is primarily used for.

11-22-2005, 05:50 PM
Here's an update:

I finished the lower doors and installed the shelf for the CD changer and the receiver.

Yes, there are some big gaps between the upper doors... I needed to leave that much gap so they could close... I am just going to install a trim piece on one door to cover the gap, and it will look "finished". I'm going to do the same trim on the bottom door so it matches.

I am going to cut the shelves now for inside the upper doors, and tomorrow I have to go to Home Depot for some wheels to help support the upper doors. Even though the drawer sliders I got claim they support 100 pounds, and the doors weigh maybe 15 pounds right now, there is some sag. So, I will mount small wheels right at the edge, and that will hopefully do the trick. I also need to get more wood, because I still need to do the shelves above the TV.

You don't have a garage and you have two project cars? Dang. I'm sorry I wasn't able to take advantage of an $800 2-post lift that came up on Craigslist recently. I'm not spending too much until we get moved into the new house. The builder says Christmas. I hope he's right.

The only problem is that the weight of the door is making it sag on the sliders. I bought the hardcore ones from Home Depot, but when it's fully extended, it sags. So, what I'm doing to remedy the problem is kinda simple... I'm putting a wheel here to support the weight, which should get rid of the sag.

So back to the topic... As you can see, I angled the shelves in the cabinet doors, because it's easier than coming up with some sort of front piece to hold the tapes/DVDs in place. I will be building a slide out tray for the TV to sit on, and it will have a lower section where the cable box and my PS2 will go.
