Steel 04-24-2007, 07:27 PM AH yes boys and girls. The oh so short riding season is upon us here in Taxachusetts, and I've decided to get a new bike. Only this time it's going to actually happen, unlike last year.

If you don't know what this is, then go DIAF.
So. I need some advice from the people savvy with buying expensive things. I don't really have much experience haggling and I was hoping for some advice. The MSRP of this thing is $8599. I have a trade in consisting of a 2000 DR650 which the guy at the dealer said I could probably get $1000 for it. Waht would be a fair OTD price? I was thinking maybe $71-7300? I know that I have to pay tax title and such, but I do NOT want to pay the bullshit 'assembly fee' that all they do is bolt on two things and charge you $500 for it.
On the other hand, there is a local dealer that has a USED one for sale (which is rare. you never find these damn things used). One problem is that it's an 03 (the weird year) and he's asking $6600 for it, which is way too much. People were buying 06 leftovers for 65. The other problem is that the sales guy at the first dealer is a really nice guy, and he even remembered my name after a YEAR, after i DIDN'T buy a bike from him! I almost feel obligated, and plus this dealer has a good history of customer service and such.
So. Tell me what to do.
P.S. Do you think i can haggle the price of the bike down a little more with the promise of buying gear from them? I need a new jacket, pants and boots, which i think that if they knocked a couple hundred more bucks off of the bike I'd be more willing to but the gear from them...
Say No To Pistons 04-24-2007, 07:58 PM Damn that's ugly.
Steel 04-24-2007, 08:10 PM Quit lookin in a mirror then.
Im sure you;re one of those people that prefers their bikes covered in plastic. Whatever. If they still made the completley naked style, i'd get one of those ina heartbeat..

Anyway. So. Where are the helpful people, damnit?
Supper 04-24-2007, 10:11 PM My suggestion is, be prepared to walk away from the deal at anytime. If a dealer realizes that you will walk away if the deal doesn't feel right to you they will try a little harder. The way dealerships make money is on parts and labor, not on OTD sales.
Also, almost all bargaining power walks out the door the minute you mention "Financing." The way I got the deal I did on my dirtbike was tell him I was going to pay cash and I would only buy it from him if he worked me out one hell of a deal. Also helped that I was at one of the largest Honda dealerships in Utah.
Tofuball 04-25-2007, 08:48 AM Haha, I like things "Naked" more then with plastic, usually cuz I work on things more then drive them, and all that plastic gets in the way! :P
Steel 04-25-2007, 09:04 AM I'd never buy a buell with a piece of shit harley engine in it (and they're ugly to boot), and i'm not a beemer guy, i dont like flat engines on bikes. I dont like 4 banger crotch rockets (well not that i dont LIKE THEM) i prefer naked sport 90* V-twins. Streetfighters. Enough about my choice on bikes, because i could give a rats ass if you guys like it or not, all that matters is that i LOVE it!
Anyway, i won't have to finance because i basically got approved last year for a suzuki credit card. I think i should ask the guy if he can get me a deal on a leftover, that should drop the price a good grand or so.
Steel 04-25-2007, 12:30 PM A used and thrashed ducati monster goes for the same price as a new SV, and the SV handles better. And the motor is better. And its cheaper to maintain. I'm not asking for advice on what to buy, i'm asking on HOW to buy it.
Tofuball 04-25-2007, 12:33 PM I say go to the first dealer, be upfront and honest about your concerns, then lay down a firm price (that you researched beforehand), and if he tried to talk it up ask what else he could throw in to make it comparable or worth your while to the other vehicles you found for that price.
And as you said, you can always get up and leave.
Cosby 04-25-2007, 12:57 PM How about you sell your other bike rather than trade it in for just $1000.
Steel 04-25-2007, 01:35 PM Because i hate selling privately, especially bikes, and the model i have now sin't exactly sought after up here. If i was lucky, i MIGHT get 1500 for it privately after leaving up in the ads for 3-4 months.
Steel 04-25-2007, 06:13 PM No used ones or leftovers available in the area, otherwise i'd jump all over that.
there WAS a wrecked one (cosmetic damage) available for a while, but it finally got sold, and like i said the only other used one is way overpriced.
$100T2 04-25-2007, 06:17 PM I'm trying to get a Kawasaki ZZR 600.

MSRP is $7299.
Steel 04-25-2007, 06:36 PM Nice kwak, T2. I didn't know that they didn't make them in pukey colors anymore. My buddy decided to skip physics 2 lab yesterday...why? He was buying a new 07 CBR600RR. The blue they have this year was real nice. He should be finished with the breakin by the time im just starting mine, heh. My other buddy at school is picking up some older used bike and there will be much rejoicing this summer.

According to the guy at the dealer, it's a de-tuned Ninja. He said it will still go 0-60 in 4 seconds, so it is still plenty fast. When I sat on it, it was pretty comfortable for me (6'3" with 6'7" wingspan, 190 lbs), and the passenger seat wasn't as high as the Ninja, and it was wider. I'm looking for a sport/cruising bike rather than the pure speed of a Ninja or going to a Harley wanna-be like 90% of the assholes around here.
The pukey colors are all on the Ninja. The Ninja blue is actually really nice, but the yellow/orange and the green are fugly. The ZZR is silver, black or red only.
Steel 05-08-2007, 10:02 AM Alright guys. I just got back from the closest suzi dealer near me and he quoted me for $9234.23 which includes freight, prep, documentation and taxes. This seems really high to me. I told him I'd sleep on it but I don't think i'm willing to pay that much.
I did the math myself (and using 83% of the list as the invoice) i got:
$8699 * 83% = $7220 invoice
+10% profit = $7942
+$350 for freight and prep = $8292
+5% tax rate in Mass = $8706
According to that, he's charging me $528 for the 'documentation fee' (the title fee in mass is $50), and i still have to pay for the registration and plate mee myself because they dont act as a registry there. Is there anything I'm missing, or is he just trying to make a killer profit off a young new buyer? I'd like to call a couple of the other dealers around to see if they'd let me drive it away for 87-8750, or is this still high?
BTW, i'm selling the DR privately for $2500 and i got a few biters, so the dealer can lick my ABC for trying to screw me in a trade in.
