With a company called First Investors Corp. The title is Financial Services Rep, but basically it is insurance, mutual fund, 401k/IRA/Roth sales. The dude told me to come to the interview in professional business attire (which I consider to be a suit and tie) which I don't have. I looked the company up on jobvent.com and ripoff.com and sure enough found many negative reviews on jobvent.com and a couple on ripoff.com. You have to pay for the licensing fees and salary depends on how much you sell basically. According to people's reviews on jobvent, the company does not reimburse for mileage and benefits and what not. I am thinking of not going to the interview, but want opinions.

2ndGenRocket, I have a feeling you may know about this sort of stuff so feel free to chime in.

never shoot yourself in the foot. the problem with places like job vent and ripoff are that they are going to be angry because they no longer work there. maybe they were fired for sucking at their job. or maybe a million other reasons. go in there with an open mind and decide from there. who knows, maybe this job is just right for a guy like you and was not right for the other people.

Those kind of jobs do suck. Any job where you have to spend your own money to make money for the company is absolute bullshit IMO. It's not worth it......

Word. I don't want to buy a fucking suit either.

If they are really a legit company, Employee pay packages are part of their cost of doing business.

If they aren't offering a decent wage just to get you started.....walk away quickly.

And a business suit. Go to Goodwill and get a jacket that fits.

Trust me, new shit will look funny, you want something "broken in" Just a sport coat and slacks with a tie that all have the same color scheme.

But back to that job. If you have to invest......and here me now......And never forget what I am telling you for as long as you live.....if you have to invest a penny of your own money....how much ownership do you get in the business?

If the answer is NONE then walk away and know you've done yourself a favor. I know you might get desperate, but after getting over the initial HIGH if getting a new job, you realize you aren't making any real money if any money at all.

A company that you want to work for will have a salary and a benefit package to offer you.

And in this market, there are plenty of companies looking for people.

Suits can be quite expensive, but you could always buy one at a second-hand store, get one of those that looks like it was made from an old couch. Speek with a lisp and drink whiskey during the interview. Mid-interview, order a pizza. Film the whole thing.

(seriously tho, I'm with Toyo7, remember to ask lots of questions during your interview)

^^ that story is straight from an experience I had in 1988 with a "Brokerage firm" called Stewart-James.

They under write penny stocks from Non existent oil exploration corporations and oh darn the Well was dry and we didn't find any oil....too bad you lost your investment...try again??

The License you need is the Series 63 and the Series 7 that is granted by the SEC...sure they are real, the investment firm is a boiler room scam. You can use the License to go to work for a real brokerage house but they won't pay you anything upfront either. Living at home and you have some way of making money to exist....great...

They want your "list" or "book" of friends in order to give you someone to call on as they provide you nothing. Not to mention when you call all your friends and relatives you are more likely to unwittingly scam them out of their money. which is what they want in the first place.

By about the third month you'll figure it out an quit, but by that time they will have hired 10 more kids just like you to take your place.

It's a bullshit job, don't even bother. They make you pay them to get trained to sell their investment products.

Ask yourself this: Do you have any experience with financial services, funds, or any other investment product? If not, then why would a company show interest? They basically recruit whoever and turn them into sales monkeys at your expense.

Especially living in New York.

I get away with it here in SoCal. You can always spot the East Coast guys...they stroll up in that black suit with the white shirt.

Yeah, you need a suit guy. Especially if you're searching for a job. Go find something with pinstripes and get it tailored.

I actually have a Sean John suit, and it is pretty awesome. Really comfortable, and looks a lot more expensive than it is. Honestly I like it better than some of my Brooks Brothers suits that cost twice as much. It looks like they have a major sale on them at Macy's.

No, it is not MLM as they mess with Licensing. It is a typical Penny stock boiler room.

Unless you get into it, It is hard to grasp.

Yes, these guys are licensed by the SEC but all their "Securities" (Stocks) are practically bogus. This is America and there is an open and free market. Buyer beware and do your "Do Diligence" or else you put your money into a worthless but legal Security (Stock)

2ndGen.Rocket
02-25-2008, 10:02 PM
Jos A Bank isn't bad at all, you can find a decent suit there. Trust me though, a $100 suit will look like a $100 suit. There is a huge difference. The Sean John suit is the cheapest one I have, but probably also my favorite. Everything else I have is from Brooks Brothers, or here: http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/p/gbpdefault/r/Web-Department/Men's-Suits-_and-Separates/productlisting.aspx?ppp=12&sortBy=&page=1&back=False&canned=&browse=Y

If you can swing one of the Tyrwhitt suits they look really nice and are pretty comfortable. You will have to bring it somewhere to get it tailored though.

2ndGen.Rocket
02-25-2008, 10:08 PM
Brooks Brothers 346 is their cheaper line, but you are still going to spend upwards of $500: http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatSectionView.process?IWAction=Load&Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=249

Honestly dude, I would go to Jos A Bank or Mens Wearhouse and get fitted. Then buy something reasonable.

Even better than that, if you have a Marshalls or TJ Maxx go look there. They used to have Calvin Klein suits and other nice stuff for real cheap, like $200 total. You can pick one up cheap and get it tailored for $50.

Vert8813B
02-26-2008, 06:06 AM
Word. I got TJ Maxx and Marshalls right across from one another. I will not use my credit card though.

Herschel
02-26-2008, 01:12 PM
Tailoring a Calvin Klein is a must. Especially for a guy with a stocky build. They have these gay ass shoulder pads in the jackets that make your shoulders look like they come up to your ears. You must remove them completely or you will look fantasticly stupid....

Vert8813B
02-26-2008, 01:16 PM
So you're saying looking like a neckless guido is a bad thing?

Herschel

So you're saying looking like a neckless guido is a bad thing?

It doesn't actually make you look neckless (at least not on me), so much as it makes your shoulders look like they have tiny wings. Sort of like those big tassely things you see on old school military uniforms only without the tassel's.

Supper

Mens Wearhouse and get fitted.
Eh, Mens Warehouse was alright.

The fucking guy wouldn't listen to me though so they tailored the pants so they fit funky. Gonna try and get em re-done when I need em again. Though if I actually keep losing weight I'll just have to buy a new suit when I finally need one again.

Total waste of several hundred bucks.
