I'm buying a soprano saxophone... I used to play tenor sax a long time ago, and a bit of alto. My GF wants me to play her some Kenny G, which I haven't played in 20 years, but I figure hey, it's easy enough...

I bought my GF a violin for Xmas last year, my daughter just got a guitar, and my son wants a keyboard and drumset for Xmas this year... So we're getting musical up in this piece... So I thought I'd ask:

What instruments do you all play?

bass, guitar, and drums... in that order

im probably amature at best at all 3 instruments... but i can still jam fairly well.

Oh, and I can sing pretty well provided it is in the Alice in Chains/Days of the New/Pearl Jam range.

I can sing pretty well, too, but that's because I was a music geek in HS. Tenor/Baritone/Bass vocals.

You suck.

All saxophones are awesome. Eventually, I will have one of each. I'm starting off with the soprano because I've always wanted one, the alto will be next.

I played tenor sax heavily for 8 or 9 years; marching band, symphonic stuff, quartets, jazz band. I hated playing by myself though, never did it. Not even practicing at home. So once I was out of the community jazz band (when my son was born), I set it down, and pretty much haven't picked it back up except to mess around a bit. Which sucks, I used to kick ass on the sax. Our quartet was very talented, we rocked.

I also play a *bit* of guitar, very basic stuff.

We own:
Tenor sax, 2 trombones ("pea shooter" and one with the valve thingy), baby grand piano, clarinet, violin, several acoustic guitars (1 acoustic/electric), a mandolin (shitty, broken strings and such), and a drum set. There may be something I'm forgetting.

The drums are what make me feel guilty. My in-laws bought them for my son last Christmas, and nobody in my house plays them. I have no idea how, I can't make my right foot do differently from my hands. It's frustrating as hell.

I want a banjo. I think I'd enjoy messing around with that.

It takes a lot of practice. When I was on the road all the time I would practice by listening to songs and make the kick movements with my foot and try to keep time with my right hand. There are still some songs that get me fucked up due to strange timing, but if you do it enough your extremities will learn to operate independently of each other.

I think my main block is that for years, my right foot kept time. I tapped it; and when I wasn't tapping it, I was marching in time. It's hard to undo that.

I wouldn't pay $5000 for any sax... Unless I was playing professionally, I wouldn't do it.

My sax is a King, it's a serious piece of shit. I'm pretty sure I know more alternate fingerings than most players, just to compensate for the odd ball notes that are out of tune. The design of the sax itself is pretty dumb as well, the low B and Bb holes are on the left side, rather than the usual right side, so if you hold it against your right leg, any loose clothing gets caught under the pads. The low Eb hole placed in such a ways that the little guard over it always got crushed just from sitting in the case and being carried around. I'd have to bend it out on a regular basis.

Never buy a King, unless it's for a kid just learning to play.
