Download the x86 Live distro. Burn it to CD, then boot of the CD.
Ubuntu is easy enough MY MOM figured out how to run it. The live disc won't fuck with your HD, so if you decide you don't like it; shut the machine down, take out the disc, and boot up like normal.
My dad got an old Compaq laptop, plugged in his old D-Link wireless network card and I booted it into Ubuntu off the Live disc. It found the wireless card, found the network, joined up, and Firefox ran beautifully on it.
Of all the distros I've used, Ubuntu is probably the best for Linux n00bs. If you're really feeling adventurous, give Slackware a shot. It's more like UNIX than Linux as far as how it behaves, and even I found it kind of a bitch to set up.
For a utility version of Linux, I keep a copy of Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/) (DSL) around. That distro saved about $100,000 worth of test data off a computer that was going on the fritz.
Say No To Pistons 05-07-2006, 04:40 PM and why are you sick of windows?

well, your mom is smarter than me. i DLed the Ubuntu 5.10 and opened it... what's next?
i'm sick of windows because it starts up slow and i get shit on my taskbar that i want to take off, but can't. not to mention my browser crashes alot and the spyware is pretty annoying.

Pick a download mirror.
Download "PC (Intel x86) live CD" ISO.
Burn that ISO to a CD (An ISO is a disk image, your CD burning app should be able to burn those).
Then boot off that CD. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD before HD.
sir rupert hobo 05-07-2006, 09:52 PM now all i gotta do is DL some disc buning software...
thanks man.
Animal 05-07-2006, 10:35 PM Linux has that built in...

RX7_2ner 09-05-2006, 04:23 AM ubuntu will send you free cd's, or at least they have before.

Hades12 09-08-2006, 01:58 PM I use Suse.
sbrxguy 09-13-2006, 11:27 PM switchin to a mac for my next laptop. I cant keep doing my forex trading on windows. It crashes, its unstable, and its slow, and my battery lasts an hour and a half, thats it...best one out of the last 4 laptops I've had, my g-mas iBook....6 hours on battery, and its faster to boot, load, surf, etc. Yeah, so what if its a mac, I can run windows now too, if i just have to play that old game or something. I'm just gonna do it.
