Fendamonky 06-04-2008, 10:08 AM My mother let me borrow her truck to drive down to Norfolk while I'm back in the states on vacation, under one condition... I need to give it an oil change.
So I'm driving back home today and decided to stop by my buddies real quick to do the oil change before jetting. It's an '02 Toyota Tacoma, V-8 type. I'm not entirely familiar with this type of car... So I jump on the creeper with a properly sized wrench, size it against the bolt on the oil pan, it's way to big. I walk back to the garage and grab a smaller one, pop back on the creeper and the 14mm fits. Bolt comes out and I'm marveling at the lack of "umph" needed to get the bolt loose. Fluid starts pouring out and I note that it's not oil... it's red. As I look around again I realize that was the fucking transmission!!! MOTHER FUCKER!!!
That's what I get for rushing a job. Goddamnit I feel stupid right now. Luckily it's an automatic, I've just got to find the dipstick for the tranny ^_^
I feel like a complete idiot, just thought I'd share with you kids. Figure you'd get a laugh out of it... I am NOT telling my mother =P
Tofuball 06-04-2008, 10:12 AM Dont forget to check the ATF with the engine running :)
rxtasy 06-04-2008, 10:22 AM finally an automotive manufacturer got smart and put a drain plug on the tranny? all the autos i've delt with, to drain the fluid involved dropping the pan.
toyo7 06-04-2008, 10:53 AM v-8 tacoma??? as far as i knew the taco came with a 2.4 4cyl (rwd only model), 2.7 4cyl (4wd model) and 3.4 v-6

Lotsa trucks have plugs :)
Fendamonky 06-04-2008, 11:02 AM Err.... Tundra. My bad.
Yeah, I've never dealt with an automatic transmission before, so as soon as I saw the ATF fluid visions of gravity feeding the tranny fluid back in (a la rx-7) swam through my head and I couldn't decide if I wanted to laugh or cry..
Luckily my buddy got out of the shower (over at his house) and told me about the dipstick bit. Absolute lifesaver.
Then I ripped the shit out of my thumb nail when I took the oil plug off.
Wonderful start to the day ^_^
Vert8813B 06-04-2008, 11:17 AM At least it wasn't gear oil. That shit smells.
Supper 06-04-2008, 11:34 AM I couldn't get the oil filter off my truck a few months back, asked a friend of mine to give it a try. He crawls out from underneath the truck with the filter from my Alison transmission in his hand
we had a good laugh, it only lost a bit of fluid. It took another two hours to get the oil filter off, still don't know why it was so goddamned solid.
Supper 06-04-2008, 11:37 AM At least it wasn't gear oil. That shit smells.I love the smell of 90 weight gear lube, it smells like summer. I used to spend half my summer elbow deep in ski lift gear boxes. Your coveralls would smell like that shit for two or three days and then, of course, have to inspect the next gear box the day you pull the new covies out of the truck.
Vert8813B 06-04-2008, 11:40 AM Gear Oil smells like hairy dyke bush imo.
D-Rock 06-04-2008, 11:58 AM At least it wasn't gear oil. That shit smells.
you learn to love it... at least i did after being surrounded by it for a week while doing gears on my 96 lt1 z28...
i learned that changing the bearings on that thing without a press and with it in the car is a major pita...
now i get a half stock at the smell of used gl
Supper 06-04-2008, 12:00 PM Gear Oil smells like hairy dyke bush imo.
You just haven't worked with it enough. Like fuckin greenie said, its an acquired taste :D
Vert8813B 06-04-2008, 12:19 PM Nothing will change the fact that it smells like butch dyke bush.
rtryb2200 06-04-2008, 12:43 PM And you know what hairy butch dyke bush smells like?
D-Rock 06-04-2008, 12:52 PM And you know what hairy butch dyke bush smells like?
deliciousness?
Vert8813B 06-04-2008, 12:52 PM Unfortunately.
Eatmyclutch 06-04-2008, 06:18 PM We've all been there before. If you deny it, well you're just an even bigger retard.
wotnartd 06-04-2008, 08:32 PM I once drained my FC's oil into a catch pan without removing the plug on the catch pan. 6 quarts of oil onto the driveway.
czarofzar 06-04-2008, 09:04 PM I once filled my crank case up with oil....all the way up past the lifters.
wotnartd 06-04-2008, 09:04 PM I once filled my crank case up with oil....all the way up past the lifters.
Did you forget the draining step?
czarofzar 06-04-2008, 09:19 PM no but I did discover what an engine knock is.
Tofuball 06-04-2008, 09:23 PM Did you run it like that? :)
Did oil go EVERYWHERE? Even in your raccoon wounds? :D
czarofzar 06-04-2008, 09:30 PM yup ran on full oil. Engine knock soon followed
rtryb2200 06-04-2008, 09:46 PM I didn't change my oil for over 40,000 miles and the truck is still running strong
wotnartd 06-04-2008, 09:48 PM The oil in my FB is like 5 years old. I haven't gotten it running long enough to heat up, to change.
rtryb2200 06-04-2008, 09:49 PM as long as there is some lubrication
wotnartd 06-04-2008, 09:51 PM I put twelve minutes on it this year, not even twelve miles. Minutes.
I tried fitting a FC rad in my FB. It doesn't even fit after the custom bracketry I made. I am so poor I can;t get a real rad, either.
rtryb2200 06-04-2008, 09:54 PM I have a t2 swap all ready for you! It'll bolt right in!!!
wotnartd 06-04-2008, 09:55 PM Did you just sell the truck, not the motor?
I interview at UPS tomorrow. If I get in, I'll be making a whopping $160 before taxes. This time last year I was making $450 a week after taxes.
Fendamonky 06-04-2008, 10:08 PM 160 a week before taxes?? Ouch...
That 450 isn't great, but it's not terrible either.
I get about 700 a week after taxes =\ It sucks ass though since most everything I purchase is out on town, so I spend pounds (2 USD = 1 GBP) more often than not.
rodney87 06-04-2008, 11:48 PM Back in high school shop I was helping a buddy do an oil change, he asked me to check the oil level while he washed his hands. He was WAY over on the dipstick. Come to find out he drained the tranny and put 5 quarts in the engine :banghead:
hotholly 06-05-2008, 03:30 AM I couldn't get the oil filter off my truck a few months back, asked a friend of mine to give it a try. He crawls out from underneath the truck with the filter from my Alison transmission in his hand

had that problem on the rover, oil filter was jammed solid, dad had to whack a screwdriver through the cartridge in the end to get enough leverage to shift it.
mazdaspeedrex 06-05-2008, 03:33 PM Work in a shop for a awhile like me and this shit is a weekly occurance. The worst oil filters to get off are the factory installed ones at the first oil change.
Tofuball 06-05-2008, 04:08 PM THe worst oil filter I ever had to change was trapped by ninjas. When I went to change it the whole car exploded and I died instantly.
Luckily I had an extra guy from eating all those weird mushrooms in the forest the other day.
