Yeah. Gonna be doing strength training. Concentrating on freeweights with some machine use and cardio on two days. I have a 5 day workout planned.

I need to get myself a music player thingie so I don't have to listen to the dumb crap they play over the speakers at the gym.

Anyhoo, here's my plan:

mon: 15 minute cardio warm-up and upper body
tues: 45 minute intense cardio
wed 15 minute cardio warm up and abs and back
thurs: 45 minute cardio (probably swimming)
friday: 15 minute cardio warm up and lower body
break on weekend.

I'm also changing my diet from shit junk to healthy stuff, with lots of protein. Chicken and rice and beans mostly (cause im poor), but i'm considering making protein shakes for right after workout.

Right now im 6'2" 185lb and 12.5% bodyfat. My goal is to go down to maybe 10% bodyfat and stay about the same weight, maybe gain a few pounds... and get this damn belly off that i've apaprently been growing. Not looking to get huge, but definly cut and get some muscle. More like.. a strong soldier as opposed to a schwarzenegger, ya know?

Anyone have any tips, tricks, do's and don'ts? All this exercising and weight training stuff is pretty new to me, but I look forward to hitting the gym every day. Oh.. and the view is pretty damn good too.

Add Muscle Milk before the workout and a good Amino Complex for after and you got a solid start. Aminos are building blocks for muscle so its a must have. Do some googling on the subject and go shopping, you can find deals on the stuff usually so it shouldnt run you too much money.

Apple has the lil Ipod thingies that hold 250-500 songs for just $49-69 ... which really isnt bad.. I had to get one for me for when I go to the gym.. they are very small and easy to keep on you while working out.

ooh.. actually i was doing a lot of looing around and i saw one method that looked promising, the stronglift 5x5. It consists of doing squats (5x5), Bench press (5x5), Inverted rows (3xF), pushups (3xF), and reverse crunches (3x12), alternated with squats, overhead press (5x5), deadlift (1x5), pullups (3xF) and prone bridges (3x 30 sec) every other day.

One is suppose to start out using ONLY the bar (or something lighter if they can't even lift that) and then add 5 pounds EVERY workout. I should be squatting 1.2-1.5 my bodyweight by 12 weeks.

check it out, it doesnt seem like BS. I'm going to give it a shot for 12 weeks putting my all into it and letting you guys know how it goes

I'm just going to need to find a spotter or something when the weights start getting heavy.

Noo...those are guidos. I hate them. Most any guy with half a brain and a set of nuts hates those toolbags too. Nothing to do with working out.

there is a new work out gimmick every month, I don't read any of that crap anymore

it's all about intensity and keeping things changed up, always challenging yourself

my strength at 41 is as good as it's ever been, I'm doing side laterals with 50s x 10, still benching 320, barbell row with 225 x 10, curls with 135 x 8, and leg press with 650 x 10

consistency and nutrition, there are no short cuts

Exactly why this isnt a gimmick - the exercises change up and you're adding weight at each workout. I'm looking forward to this, even though i'll be squatting an empty bar and deadlifting 20 pound plates at first, heh. But that will cahnge rapdily as i add 15 pounds per week (30 on the deadlift)

Just keep in mind that it's 80% diet and 20% working out.

Most people think that u can scarf down a Big mac twice a day and "work it out"

Oh don't worry, i'm changing my diet around as well, not that I really ate all that much bullshit in the first place. Luckily i learned how to cook a lot of pretty healthy stuff from my mom - polish meat and potatos sort of stuff. Bean soup. I gotta call my sister and ask her too, she works out a lot and knows all the good healthy stuff. I just have to add the protein to my diet so my muscles can get stronger.

And i would say, at least for a guy my size, it's 50/50.
