My old iBook G4 I've had for about 2+ years now finally took a shit on me this morning.

I was happily chatting on IRC when it froze mid-sentence. I gave it a minute or two to "catch up", since every now and then it'll do that and come back to life 5-10secs later. My trackpad has been doing that a lot recently too. 60secs later it still hadn't responded, no mouse movement, no keyboard, nothing. Totally frozen.

Apple-ctrl-power to do a hard reboot, and this is what I was greeted with after the startup sound: http://i5.tinypic.com/11r9lsh.jpg http://theforumlounge.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Not a good thing. Luckily my parents have a newish iMac with over 120GB of available disk space, so I plugged my iPod firewire cable between the two machines and attempted to boot my iBook into target disk mode (Turns the computer into a really expensive external firewire hard drive). That worked, aside from the display being fuxx0red. So my life is in a 20.14GB disk image on my parents computer right now. :screwyou:

Will probably end up with a PowerBook G4 shortly, spending money I don't have :dammit:

Any Mac with firewire has that capability.....

microsoft makes you think you're on the bleeding edge of technology... but it's really old technology that has a new interface. Nothing really changes with windows besides the interface.

I heard vista is something like 13GB now. Do you really need 13GB of *stuff* in an OS? I mean, I know it's not drivers, because Linux will run just about anything on the planet, and it's well under 1GB and comes with more software than any other OS i've used.

Actually no, the drive in my laptop is on a disk image on my parents computer. The drive still works, no data loss [yet]. I have a partial backup at my apartment too.

I rarely lose data since I keep several backups of my extremely important data (Keychains, Palm database, porn, iTunes library, banking info, taxes, etc) backed up several times in separate places.

holy shit... http://theforumlounge.com/images/smilies/eek.gif So I'm at the Apple store right now, just had my iBook looked at by the "geniuses". They said it's probably the logic board. Looked up the serial number and THE DAMN THING IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY!!!!!

So I told them the optical drive is hanging up, and the trackpad sticks too. The guy noticed half the keys on my keyboard are worn out, so he threw a keyboard onto the workorder.

New logic board, new CD/DVD, new keyboard, and a new trackpad is all over $1000, and I don't have to pay a dime.

Unfortunately the battery isn't covered, but it's still damn near a whole new computer FOR FREE.

I love Apple... and if you ever get one, GET APPLECARE!!! That $300-some investment about four years ago has bought me two new computers since then.

Well, the continuation of the iBook saga.

Finally got the trackpad/enclosure in from backorder. Taking the machine in tomorrow morning (or afternoon, whenever i wake up) to have that switched out. Also having them check out my display, since the backlight flickers at lower levels. Dunno how long it'll take, i'm guessing only a day or two since i'm on high priority.

I am looking forward to having a new trackpad and clicky button though.

Wow. So the enclosures they got in are the wrong kind. They're putting my computer back together for now, but they offered me a FREE Macbook. I'll probably pick it up in a few weeks, since i'm headin to my parents place this weekend and dont' want to deal with installing software the whole time i'm there.

This'll be the 2nd free computer Apple has given me.
