oakback 08-20-2008, 01:45 PM He's 6, just started 1st grade. In his class of 20 students, 18 are black and 2 (including him) are white. He kindergarten class was about the same.
We live in the south, so naturally many children have southern accents. We noticed a problem when my wife or I jokingly said something in a thick southern drawl, and he yelled "why are you talking like a black person!?!" This happened a few times, we've corrected him, "that's not how black people talk, it's a southern accent, that's how southern people talk." He also would say "all black kids call me 'boy' (more like "boah", if you know what I mean), why do black kids call me 'boy'?" He gets frustrated at people who talk in a thick accent, or points it out when he hears it in public places.
So here's the dilemma, if all or some of the kids in his class do anything negatively (as kids that age generally do on occasion, especially when they realize it annoys somebody), he associates it with something that all black people do, rather than just stupid stuff kids do. So far it's only about the accent (at least he prefers correct grammar and annunciation?), but I'm worried it might develop into something bigger.
Or it may not bother him ever again, I dunno. It sucks. The teacher can't correct the way every single kid speaks without being a bitch and alienating them, so I'm not sure what she could do (will have a conference with her soon though). Either that, or we find some deceitful way to make it look like we live in a different school zone (there are ways).
1revnrex 08-20-2008, 02:20 PM Get him out of the school pronto before he's reading Mein Kampf and joining Klan rallies.
dg123 08-20-2008, 02:29 PM Might have to sit down with your son to explain to him that this isn't associated with race. Its too easy for a child to be influenced by their environment into thinking that the way a certain group of people act isn't the way an entire race acts. If you could somehow demonstrate that other black people don't talk in this manner, it can do wonders in explaining to him the differences in southern dialect and how other cultures speak.
wotnartd 08-20-2008, 02:32 PM I was going to make a crack about nigras. But I won't.
You should move to Wisconsin.
1revnrex 08-20-2008, 02:35 PM On a side note Driving Miss Daisy is on CMT right now.
BATMAN 08-20-2008, 03:12 PM As I understand, upon viewing the ebony rooster, he will have a greater antithesis of love for the owner of the ebony rooster......
In other words, has he seen their 3rd leg?
1revnrex 08-20-2008, 03:14 PM Holy shit. That's awkward.
oakback 08-20-2008, 03:43 PM It's awkward, too!
1revnrex 08-20-2008, 03:51 PM Yah that too!!
dg123 08-20-2008, 04:36 PM Don't worry, no matter what happens, He will save us all :bigthumb:

lol, mine turns into nunchuks when you unscrew the long part.
2ndGen.Rocket 08-21-2008, 06:37 AM Maybe it's better for him to learn that most black kids down south are likely to steal his toys if he leaves them sitting around.
Supper 08-21-2008, 07:56 AM And where, exactly, is the problem with this? At least he is getting a good dose of the real world.
jenner 08-25-2008, 12:32 AM I'm in GA too so I know what you're talking about. If the school is a failing school then you have the option of putting him in another distract school. Maybe being the minority will teach him a lesson in how to treat others. I don't know what to say because I know I would pull my kid out.

It's an A or B school, so there's really nothing wrong with the actual education there.
oakback 09-02-2008, 09:47 AM He brought home some work they did in class. One was a picture that the teacher handed out for them to color. It was a picture of a mailman, and the words at the top of the page, which were obviously written then copied for the class, said...
"The mailman don't work on Labor Day."
Seriously? I mean, seriously? The mail man....DON'T work on Labor Day. Keep in mind, you have to go to college to become a teacher here. College. The mail man don't work on Labor Day.
My wife crossed out "don't" and wrote "doesn't" above it, with a bunch of question marks and a frowny face. It'll go back to the teacher like that. Shit like this pisses me off. At orientation, I also heard the teacher say "libary" and "aks a question". Is it really that difficult?
czarofzar 09-02-2008, 10:44 AM i hate 'axe a question'. makes me look upon them as dumb

Get that kid out of there ASAP. A southern accent is one thing, but being retarded.....well that's something else entirley. Things like that should not come from a school teacher, no matter what grade they teach.
Rotofire 09-04-2008, 05:18 AM On another note: I'm taking online college course (I know, I hate myself...but I'm overseas) and my professor posted "Happy Independence Day" at the bottom of his post.
*facepalm*
oakback 09-04-2008, 07:22 AM Without shelling out for a private school or homeschooling, I don't think there's any way I could get him out. I can apply for an "economic or medical hardship", but any other reason has to be approved by the school superintendent. It'd be rough arguing that without sounding flat-out racist.
Tofuball 09-04-2008, 09:26 AM You should sell the child to a passing caravan.
You can always make more kids, but money is hard to come by.

Thanks for the info, I'll set up a road-side stand when I get home.
Already got another kid on the way, so your plan is working perfectly!
