This is the first time the temp has been less than 80 deg since I got the new car. Now I know it really spins 2nd and chirps 3rd no problem....without even "power shifting"(keeping the foot all the way on the gas while shifting)

That's cool, mine used to do that too. The guys at my work kept asking what I had done to it and they couldn't believe it when I told them other than a Holley carb and intake, it was a stock engine.

Mazdaspeed Protege it is. I believe the key to chirping tires is the clutch though...not nessarily the power of the car(although, you do need some to do it). Here are a few pics:

yeah sweet car. id take that color over a yellow one anyday. i ran one back when they came out theyre quick.

Lucky huh? John Finger had this car for like 6 months before I bought it. They never let anyone look at it unless they asked basically.

I did not like the orange that much...well, its nice, but not for a daily driver. Yellow is okay, black is MUCH better. I also like the Titanium Silver, but thats another color I wouldn't want for a daily(can't see them in mirrors sometimes). The blue ones look really nice, but the yellow, silver and blue are all 2003.5 cars, which have a different spoiler and a different front lip...but sacrifise the fog lights, which I really like.

looks just like my friend's MSP. have you ran it yet? i think the best he got was a 10.2 in the 1/8

nah the key to chirping any gear is enough power, good clutch, and popping the clutch. not bad shifting....all of us do it bc its fun sometimes, but dont do it when we race.

or bad tires. i think everyone chirped third in the 96 with the old tires on it. its sporting 24.86" tires now instead of the 27.1" monsters.

only time i chirped 3rd was when i drove to travis's w/a donut on the front that was going flat itself. it had like 7 or 8 psi when i checked it lol. but my car has 100hp so u know..its a miracle i spin 2nd :D

Chirping 3rd is the difference between a 15.4 and a 15.1 in this car. I'm taking it to Commerace to prove it. If you don't, the RPM's drop a little too low and it gets into a hesitation point(Mazda's new ECU should fix it)

my fastest times in everything have always involved a moderate chirp

The reason I say that is because you could chirp 3rd in a Geo Metro, or lets just say an S14 Nissan 240sx, if you wanted to, all it would involve is getting the revs high enough before releasing the clutch on the 2-3 shift........does that say anything about the car, no, it just says you screwed up the shift. Assuming the car doesn't have a ridiculously geared diff, nothing short of a (roughly, I am just estimating here) 400HP car should break the tires loose in 3rd if properly shifted. In relation to this, check out the videos of the cars being run in Car & Driver's Supercar Challenge (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=35&article_id=2834). Note that these are all being driven by professional drivers who during these test runs consistently achieve the best 0-60 and 1/4 miles times these cars are capable of and that many of these are 600-700HP cars here.............then take note of how many of them chirp 3rd........the answer, not a damn one, but what do I know......I'm a moron

Car and Driver is crap, mainly for having their drivers come up with some of the most rediculous times for various cars' 1/4 mile times, etc. They sometimes get .5 or more seconds slower than your average joe driving the same car at a drag strip.

Say they get 14.2 at 100 in a C5. Any dumbass off the street will get a 13.8 or something in that same car. They have no clue how to make a 1/4 run over there at C&D. Piss on those fockers.. I don't take any quote from that magazine as gospel truth. I don't know how anybody could, really...

Let me try to explain a little. As long as the car you are driving doesn't fall on its face(aka, doesn't have enough power to make up for the RPM drop) than chirping each gear is the fastest way to go. Why? Because when your tires 'chirp' they are at the handeling limit....not PAST their handeling limit...AT THEIR HANDELING LIMIT. That means your are using your car to its greatest potential...unless your engine can't handle the power needed after the shift....this car does not have that problem.

then why did my e.t. drop 2/10's when i changed my driving to where i didnt chirp 2nd. no new mods, just a change in driving

not sure why could we only run 9.45 in the 96 and i changed to 2" shorter tires and it runs 9.13 now? makes no sense. i also took up the slack in the gas pedal and picked up my mph to 80 :D i didnt win my $1,000 though but im more consistent now.

change in shift points (rpms), weather, tire pressure, vehicle weight difference (from more or less gasoline)...

Any of those could have contributed.

test and tune at shady side moved from sunday 1-5pm to saturday 6-10pm. those 90 degree sundays are killers.

chirping second can seriously bog a weak engine.... you may have been shifting improperly. I'll take you on a ride in the fd and show you the difference between frying second, chirping second and not spinning second... It wont be that fun though b/c I only have a 9 pound flywheel

it doesnt bog my engine when i chirp it. sometimes it would spin sometimes chirp..all i know is when i was a little easier with the clutch i got a better time. but yup i do have a seriosuly weak engine. 100hp wooo

ps, id like to take a ride in the 7 though
