Tofuball 06-14-2008, 09:06 PM And I ran across this: http://www.chuckhawks.com/smith-wesson_dark.htm I am not knowledgeable about guns, but I know some people here are. Please, discuss. Also, Centertext. rtryb2200 06-14-2008, 10:22 PM Colts and S&W .38 revolvers used to be the staple for LEO's we have a couple but I have never shot them. Any real reason why you want one? Tofuball 06-14-2008, 10:28 PM I like the feel of the trigger, the shape/weight of the gun, the simplicity of a revolver and this one is a decent price with all the fixins. EDIT: I've never shot one either, but then again, I haven't shot much :P Just wondering if I should bother :P 1revnrex 06-14-2008, 10:37 PM I have a Charter Arms Detective 5 round snubnose that I love. A .38 Special with +P rounds is a nice back up piece. rtryb2200 06-14-2008, 10:38 PM I know the 2 we have were used by my great uncle and were range fired on a weekly basis. Considering their age they have held up for 40+ years. I personally have not heard anything bad about older S&Ws it is the newer generations that have had issues from what I understand. But I am not that knowledgeable on handguns 1revnrex 06-14-2008, 10:38 PM Not my gun but the same one http://www.armsbid.com/8webpix/1028.jpg 1revnrex 06-15-2008, 01:25 PM Why do you need penetration power in home defense? I have a CZ 52 that shoots Bulgarian ball ammo thru two 4x4s at point blank range. But why kill the neighbors? A .38 Special has TONS of good rounds that are extremely deadly and the nice thing about them is that they dont over penetrate and its something the wife/gf can pick up and shoot and not feel scared to use. .357 is a arm cannon to a woman. My wife wont shoot mine but she holds 2 inch groups at 25 feet with my .38. http://www.barnesbullets.com/products/pistol/ Very deadly rounds for the .38 Here is what the round does upon entry http://www.rifleshootermag.com/ammunition/RStriple_0723C.jpg And yah I know that isnt a .38 round. Tofuball 06-15-2008, 01:35 PM its something the wife/gf can pick up and shoot and not feel scared to use. Ding ding ding! 1revnrex 06-15-2008, 02:44 PM so you can shoot through walls a .357 Sig does not kick bad at all compared to a .357 mag I dont know what type of walls you are shooting through but my .38 doesnt have a problem with ripping through metal much less sheetrock. 1revnrex 06-15-2008, 02:51 PM a .357 Sig does not kick bad at all compared to a .357 mag .357 Sig still has a kick comparable to a .40 S&W or a downloaded 10mm Auto. I guess it all comes down to personal preference. 1revnrex 06-15-2008, 03:36 PM I've seen petite women shoot .50 caliber handguns with no problem, tell your wife to stop being a geek and kick some ass As have I but accurately? Also this is not my wife, just some skank that gets owned. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFJjaj7pXsA&feature=related Alex-7 06-16-2008, 12:30 AM Here's my pre produdction smith model 36 from the early 50's. Note the flat latch, and square grip butt. I love 38 snubbies. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a289/Alex-7/fghgfd.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a289/Alex-7/dfghgf.jpg Alex-7 06-16-2008, 03:42 AM Funny thing, one of my dads friends in silver spring (Olny) has two brand new in box older ones (70's ish) for sale. Think he wanted $250 each for them. Tofuball 06-16-2008, 09:30 AM Dude, Olney is 10 minutes from me. :D wotnartd 06-16-2008, 01:41 PM Don't be a pussy, Jason, make a gun. Tofuball 06-16-2008, 01:47 PM I would if I had experience with guns. I'm afraid my lack of knowledge will cause me to create one that blows up in my hand. wotnartd 06-18-2008, 01:15 AM I would if I had experience with guns. I'm afraid my lack of knowledge will cause me to create one that blows up in my hand. Betcha it'll scare the baddies, though. Tofuball 06-18-2008, 06:53 AM Betcha it'll scare the baddies, though. To be sprayed with blood from my exploded hand? Maybe :P wotnartd 06-18-2008, 09:51 AM Maybe they're squeamish? Tofuball 06-29-2008, 10:37 PM Funny thing, one of my dads friends in silver spring (Olny) has two brand new in box older ones (70's ish) for sale. Think he wanted $250 each for them. Hook me up, yo. I don't have to FFL since it's not being mailed, right? Alex-7 06-30-2008, 12:06 AM I will. My dads been hounding me so I'll be in silver spring pretty soon I'm sure. Cash and carry is fine by meh, I know you're not a psycho and I'm sure youve got better things to do with the $30 an ffl would charge. Tofuball 06-30-2008, 06:45 AM $65 around here. If you're gonna be in the area, come by for lunch :) DarkAngelKamui 06-30-2008, 08:54 AM Nice, Jason. :D I'd like to find a nice 9mm myself, though. Revolvers are nice, but kinda dated. I know you don't need something with a large payload considering where you live and all, but where I'm at it never hurts to have a few extra brass tips to trade. Usually threats come with more then one aggressor. Edit: I hate MD and it's gun laws. Hate them so much. Tofuball 06-30-2008, 09:37 AM I know you don't need something with a large payload considering where you live and all Explain! I live right next to the metro station :P Edit: I hate MD and it's gun laws. Hate them so much. Anyone with half a thought does. DarkAngelKamui 06-30-2008, 10:04 AM Explain! I live right next to the metro station :P lol, you're back in the cut though. Your area seemed safe enough to me. Tofuball 06-30-2008, 10:22 AM lol, you're back in the cut though. Your area seemed safe enough to me. Thats only because the axe murderers keep the serial rapists in check. It's a delicate balance. Also, all the crack addicts around here can afford it without really batting an eye. X_X Alex-7 06-30-2008, 01:01 PM the glenmont station, tofu? If so I could probably walk to your house from my dads.. Tofuball 06-30-2008, 01:18 PM Yep, I'm walkin distance from there. Lemme know when you want to come by. Alex-7 06-30-2008, 01:24 PM sweet. He's at about Randolph and kempmill. I'll shoot ya a pm when I know. Tofuball 06-30-2008, 01:32 PM I drive past there every day :P Tofuball 06-30-2008, 02:16 PM Air dried clothes feel like shit imop. Yeah, while you're over here, squeeze a towel. Alex-7 06-30-2008, 02:37 PM yeah I will, I'll even bring one from home for you to try out. We should get DAK around too, make it a mini Tfl meet. Then he and I can go out and do magic tricks for girls when it comes time for you to tend to the family. Tofuball 06-30-2008, 04:06 PM Ooo, good. That would be fun. Good luck getting him out of his turf tho, I've only managed it once :P DarkAngelKamui 06-30-2008, 04:08 PM I owe him a hangout, so it's definitely possible. Been meaning to come see you again since you had your little one too, Tofu. Tofuball 06-30-2008, 08:28 PM Yatta! Steel 07-14-2008, 09:45 PM Oh, btw, don't listen to marky (durrrrr). A .38, especially loaded with good +p rounds will be quite adequate in downing a bad guy as the case may be. Unless he's wearing kevlar, but then you might as well use a rifle. Or shotgun. With flechettes. I don't know why people think that somehow these old rounds have gotten weaker or something over time. Yeah, maybe the old LRN rounds might not be up to par, but the modern hollowpoints are effective, and .38 is cheap to shoot. It doesn't matter if you use a .22 or a fucking .454, it's not going to matter if you miss. So practice, and i guarantee you that if you get 2-3 .38 slugs in COM on a badguy, he's going down. If i'm wrong, i'll pay you $100. I prefer firing .38's out of my .357 3" SP101. They're cheaper, and i can shoot more without tiring out my hand. Even with the gun itslef weighing 27 oz., hot .357 rounds still hurt and give me a flinch. Supper 07-14-2008, 10:45 PM :werd: Steel. I like .38+P in a small hammerless pocket revolver. .357+P in a medium frame revolver. .44Mag in a large frame revolver. THen you can start talking about the 454, 500, etc. But those really aren't "defense" calibers. wotnartd 07-15-2008, 12:01 AM I looked at a S&W 500 today, only 5 lbs. $999, not a bad price, and it will kill.... anything. Tofuball 07-15-2008, 09:06 AM Well, I'm taking a pistol training class with my brother next week. After that I'll look at a purchase. Alex-7 07-15-2008, 11:25 AM I wouldnt shoot +P through a J frame smith on a regular basis. Tofuball 07-28-2008, 07:02 PM Well, I took the NRA class, and I have to say, I really like the 38s we were shooting in the class. I really don't like semi-autos. Tofuball 08-05-2008, 10:23 AM So, my choices are boiled down to what I can find for a good price used. Basically between the S&W 686 and the Ruger GP100 4 inch barrel, unless I can find the S&W with the 5 inch barrel. It would be nice to get the 686 with the 7 chambers :) Tofuball 08-05-2008, 10:36 AM I'll be in silver spring pretty soon I'm sure. What is your definition of "soon?" It's been months! :P |
