I work in telecommunications and along with the .com bubble burst there was also a sharp downturn in telecom. In '99-2000 before the bubble burst I made just over $5/hr more than I do now. That company crashed and burned, but I got a job with the same salary a few months later. That job lasted about 2 years before they laid off 30% of the employees including myself. I really wouldn't mind $200 more each and every week. I'd sure get more done on my car projects!

Anyone else care to bitch and moan?

there was a time where it seemed that about the time i'd get to double digit hourly rate, i'd do something to fuck it up and get fired. so far, things have been going good and i've surpassed my highest hourly rate of $11. the company i work for had froze raises shortly after i started in '01 due to business being extremely slow. raises have resumed since this past year and a half. so that, and with the promotion to supervisor, i'm now up to $12/hr. even with my wifes income, it's still not enough to keep up with the bills. i've tried to get her to get something else, but waitressing is all she knows. and tip money just aint what it used to be over 10 yrs ago. back then, she could bring home an average of $120 in tips a day. now she'd do good to bring in half that. keep in mind, tipped waitresses payroll check is only for around $3/hr. so that + tips usually equates to aroung $6-8/hr. and in case ur wondering, i'm a CNC Machinist/Programmer for Aurora Technologies, Inc.(ATI)

Damn, waitressing in SC must be a lot different then out here. I know a young lady that's doing better waiting tables than she was teaching school. I have another friend that tends bar and does well too. You could find a job around Portland easily. There is a surprising amount of aerospace machine work around here. Boeing in Gresham employs like 900.

180 a night?

that really isn't that much IMO, unless thats straight up tips.

and as far as how much money I used to make, the way I look at it is this; before I was making enough to stack some up in savings, but now I've gotten into a few sports/hobbies that cost a shitload so no more savings. In that manner, yes, I "make" less profit. Yet, I still have more gross income then before.

yeah, she knows she could make more money if she worked at a place that sold alcohol, but since her cousin died in a car wreck from drinking and driving, she doesn't want any part of the sale of alcohol.

About 6-7 years ago I had a job that paid very, very well. I used to put in 12-16 hour days, travel frequently and damn near had to sleep with a pager. It was extremely stressful. Damn near broke up my marriage.

When my wife got pregnant with our first child, I decided "Enough is enough". I made up my mind to get out of that BS and become a good husband again(and father).

Shortly after that decision- a door opened for me to work at a community bank in commercial lending, a job I always wanted to do ever since I started in banking. This close friend of mine from Scouting knew I was self destructing at work and offered me the job. I took a 50% paycut and started rebuilding myself (literally) from the ground up. I'm still not at the same 'pay scale' that I was in before, but I don't really give a rats ass. My wife and family are more important than that.

My life couldn't be better as a result.

Can't say i've ever made less... Every job i've had has had pay on the up and up...

I'm looking at something like $14+ an hour, sans college degree...

It's all due to experience i've had jumping around government temp jobs...

If u needed a degree in CS u probably won't get hired. I know, been there in the dot com and now in software infrastructure for another start up.

The top CS guys are the ones schooling the teachers..............

Anyone get an IPO or 2 during the dot com era?

I've never taken a pay cut, and I hope I never have to.

My pay has ranged from ....

$5.50 as a high school junior working for the Columbia Planning/Zoning adminstration as an intern. I topped out at around $9, and I was creating census tract profiles for the entire city. Stressful, and the pay was crappy, but I did get great experience and it looks good on the resume.

$11 at Spirit Telecom. A regional networking company that provides VoIP and DSL to major companies in the south.

$7.00 at Best Buy, then I realized after about a month that I was being waaay underpaid, so I left.

$7 Work study in the IT department at college. The pay sucks, but it's not a ton of work involved. Some days, I just sit at my desk, and do nothing but post on here. Kinda like what i'm doing right now.

$13 at Office Depot, and with commission that can end up being a $17/hr day.

As for IPO's, I don't like IPO's very much. I do have some stock in Office Depot. It's doing pretty well and it should double by next year if all goes as planned.

Not a bad work history...

Can't really remember the pay I got for all of my jobs, but my work experience went like this:

Universoul Circus

Blockbuster Video

UPS

Classified document coder, then promoted to scanner, then promoted to Quality Check

Ice Rink guard on the side for extra money while still working as QC

Temp work with the Department of Health

Temp work again with the Department of Health: Native American division for scholarships and healthcare for those on reservations

Current job as "Admin. Coordinator" under government contract

don't like IPOs?

Why not?

It's like winning the lottery.

IPO's involved large Risks for large gains. I can't afford "large" risks involved with IPO's right now.

BATMAN

it depends.

If they elect to pay u below market value in exchange for greater equity like stocks then u have a point.

but if they pay u beaucoupe $$$$ and give u stocks on top of that in a space that is in high demand from other competitors that can't seem to hire enough folks in that space, then I think it's well worth it.

Google would be the one IPO that i'd be interested in, costs too much for me to justify making a profit.

Office Depot, on the other hand, is around $30 a share, and I get a 15% discount and I don't have to pay commission to some greedy broker. It's nice buying stock directly from the company and not even be forced to buy it in lot(s).

google has a 15 people interview.

they usually try out stanford grads first.

if u don't work more than the 8 hours as a temp ur not going to get interviewed for the perm. job.

that usually means in before and out after the boss who works 10 - 12 hours a day.

they make u take an IQ test.

they ask u questions like where do u see urself in a few years at google.

If u answer what other companies like to hear like, "I like to grow with the company and move up the ladder, possibly be a manager." that will surely kill ur opportunity.

Don't ask me why.

If I had the money to risk, then I would have jumped on it.

I really thinking about getting some Apple stock. I'm sure their marketshare is going to explode now that they are switching to the x86 architecture.

I only get a 10% discount on UPS stock. We are down about $8-10 -vs- pre 2nd quarter prices . Basically I am getting it for < $60 a share and it will go back up to $80'ish peak season.

Our program here is a 15% discount on the lowest price each quarter...stock has now dropped since the announcement of expansion and slower sales do to the time of the year. When I first bought in it was around 23 a share and just recently sold a half when it hit 42 this has only been within 2 years. But the stock price has now fallen back around 26
