If any of u think that this:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a9/IndianSwastica.jpg

has the same meaning as this:

http://www.markdery.com/archives/images/SWASTIKA.gif

Then u need to get ur facts straight.

Here is a Buddhist swastika that pre-dates the Nazi by eons:

http://www.bamboo-delight.com/images/Buddist_Swaz.jpg

Here is an example of the Greek Cross that pre-dates the Nazis:

http://www.sarah4historyonline.com/images/2005-Crete/0123-The%20Greek%20Cross--origins%20of%20the%20swastika,%20and%20Hitler's%20 attempt%20to%20link%20Germany%20with%20the%20Golde n%20Age%20of%20Civiliza.jpeg

Here are examples of the Indian's version that pre-dates the Nazis:

http://www.illstreet.com/forums/attach-989

http://www.kamat.org/pfolio/19250.jpg

The name Swastika brings to mind very bitter memories of World War II. It was symbol of Hitler's Nazi Germany. At the time it represented Aryan superiority over all other races in the world according to the Nazis.

But in the Indian context, the swastika stands for universal welfare. "Swasti" means well-being of one and all, "ka" means symbol. Vedic literature is full of such prayers.

The origin of swastika symbol is rooted in hoary past. It appeared as a holy symbol in Mesopotamia, Babylonia, and ancient Greece in similar designs. Variations are also noticed in South and Central American (native American) relics. All these point out to some ancient, common religious rite used by ancient man for invoking a powerful deity, mostly connected with prosperity.

The Swastika is the most auspicious symbol in Buddhist, Jaina, and Hindu traditions. For every holy occasion, swastika symbol is drawn or painted, carved, or sculpted at the place of worship. To signify birth, marriage, or any joyous occasion, Rangoli of swastika forms constitute essential decoration. Swastika indicates happiness, safety, fertility, and prosperity. In the Indian ethos, all these are considered as blessings of Sun god, and we can say that swastika symbol is representation of Sun.

With that being said, what is the ruckus?

I get the impression it's from ignorance, not facts and proper education that the few are crying about.

It's ignorance and a lack of education that is the prelude to hatred, etc....

This all depends on the context of the sender to the audience.

If you spray paint a swastika on a Jewish guys house or a brothers car, chances are you are not conveying the Buddhist message of togetherness.

As a matter of fact- you might be a dick-head.

As a general rule of thumb, images that you know may serve to offend a portion of the audience you are engaged with- it is always better to err on the side of caution and refrain from its' use.

That's just my take on it (and not that I really give a rat's ass)

the nazi swastika is actually the ancient one reversed

the ancient one means 'universal harmony' and ish

the nazi's reversed the insignia, signifying the oppositte.

I do believe he was talking about the Prophecy from Nostradomous (sp?) about the man who would conquor the world under the crooked cross :dunno:

or at least sow chaos under the crooked cross... IIRC there is like 15 different translations and interpretations of that prophecy. Some say it was hitler, others say it is yet to come. Who really knows for sure.

Here's my take:

A swastika is like a middle finger.

Sure in a different time and place, it may have had a different meaning, but the meaning in present day society is pretty darn clear.

Trying to argue otherwise is pretty silly, especially when people who fought in that war are still around. (Maybe it will work 100 years from now.)

Face it, you KNOW what it means to everyone else. You know the message it sends. It had a different meaning once upon a time, but you haven't been in a coma for the last 100 years. It's obvious that the meaning has been forever changed by historical events than will not be soon forgotten.

It's all about perspective. Before 9/11, you could have walked around Manhattan with this shirt and not pissed anyone off.
http://www.tshirthell.com/images/contestpics/a102_021.jpg
If you did that today, you're asking for trouble and you know it.

I'm not saying it's a huge deal to me personally, but it's silly to be suprised at how people are taking it.

And this siloutte probably isn't an exact match for the actual planes that hit the towers. Somehow, I don't think that's gonna matter to most people...

regional differences, the symbol is still quite common in a postive sense in asia and india where it originated.

Why are you defending this? I have said it a 100 times before and he has never denied it. The whole point of using it was to cause trouble with people. He has not stated it being HIS religous symbol. No his only defense is, "its backwards". And if he didn't think it was wrong he wouldn't have changed it.

No, the whole point of using it was to weed out the most neurotic and over sensitive sissy on the internet............and looky looky it worked.

I didn't change it because I thought it was wrong (it's not wrong) and I'll put it back up in a fucking heart beat if you try and use that to defend your whining. As a matter of fact fuck it, it's going back up and I hope it offends the shit out of you and your ignorant rabbi.

I used to have shirts in my store that had the word NOSTALGIA on them - only the S was a swastika (nazi style) and the G was a hammer & sickle, soviet style. It was based on the work of a Polish friend of mine who had survived the death camps and was pissed off about the high number of Eastern Europeans longing for the 'good old days'. The NOSTALGIA message was meant to point out that the good old days were far from good.

However, people would see the shirt, their eyes would stop at the swastika, and they would assume the shirt was meant to promote fascism. People wearing the shirt would point out the hammer & sickle and remind the objectors that Nazis and Soviets were mortal enemies, but the point was lost.

That, or one could take the shirt to mean that the person wearing it was nostalgic for the days when fascists were in charge. That's probably how I'd read it unless the guy was wearing a yamaka.
