Is it true that photos (JPG, TIFF, etc.) files generally have data embedded that help trace when, where or how they were created?

I can right click and pull properties of a photo file, but is there more info that shows IP address, email, and other vital more personal info?

I don't know, but I can't wait to see the picture. If you're that concerned, it's gotta be good. :D:D:D:D

Yes, there is.

Typically, the camera type, serial # etc are always embedded in the file. As far as names and such, don't hope for much.

There are many programs that will strip this data, I believe photoshop even does it... I know gimpshop does.

Save the picture, right-click it, hit properties, then go to the "summary" tab... what's there? :)

Edit: sometimes if you create albums on the camera, or with some service that prints them and gives you a cd or something, it'll load information in there that you give as far as album name... like "costa rica vacation 2008"... but like I said, really, don't hope for much.

If you're trying to remove the info, just open the pic in MS Paint, and do a "save as" and poof!! It's all gone!! The only thing left is the type of file and size,,,

If you click more info, you'll see everything you can see: focal length, aperture, exposure, etc.

It's called EXIF data.... Don't expect to find the phone number of the hot naked girl in there... but it'll tell you flash mode, focal length, exposure, camera model/SN, date, time, etc.

How can the photo be traced to the original source?

IP address or computer ID?

IP address or computer ID?

No.

An IP address isn't a street address. If you have true static IP addresses purchased for a business, then it's easily traceable to a name and location that means something. Most people aren't going to do anything stupid while in this situation, so there's no reason for them to be protective of their identity. Otherwise, 99% of the time, you're getting no information except a general idea of where the person lives in the u.s. Besides, even broadband residential addresses change frequently, and the ONLY reference of who is who at what time is at the ISP... and that's if they have the proper records. I'm sure the FCC regulates how long they have to keep these records, but unless you have access to this database, it's not happening.

Computer ID? 99% of the time digital photos are taken by a camera that isn't currently hooked to a computer... why would it reference a computer id? Furthermore, each piece of hardware has a static MAC address, which one is the computer ID? Microsoft says the motherboard, but regardless, there's no database in the world that says "This motherboard mac address is this person and here's their info."

Now, let me tell you something about the noob "hackers" on the internet. They pretty much make up acronyms of something that doesn't exist. "Have you ever heard of XYZ123?" When you reply "no", they're going to say "exactly, ph33r m3" as some sort of psychological scare tactic. Is there all types of little floating mysteries and exploitations to general tcp/ip networking? Not really, the technology is straight forward, and that's what a protocol is--an agreement of terms of communication.

99.9% of "hacking" these days is finding exploits in services that are being ran for legit purposes, or gaining access to a users credentials, often which is done by "social hacking" rather than the hacking of the technology.

I think I'm going to start a website to explain computer concepts to non-geeks. I speak geek and regular English... :)

if i work on photo's from my laptop connected to the college net everything gets altered even the dates... the college IT maintenance dept indents new data in the images.

normally just the time/date/camera name & settings are indented.

images can say all manner of things though:

anyway i must get off, things to do... so good day from your resident neighbourhood:

I've never heard of anyone doing this, but I won't say you're lying. I suppose this is possible as everything else can be controlled by group policies. Is your laptop using XP professional?

What type of data do they add? I don't see the point... If they put anything in there to have it associated with the college, that's a bad management decision in my opinion. I see no benefits, only drawbacks.

Oh, I think that lower resolution thumbnails can be embedded in this data as well. I'm going to research this further.

Nothing has been posted and no one traced me.

So what exactly do I need to do if I want to scanned pics of someone and send it to an email list and not have it traced back?

Is it better to have it scanned to pdf file?

Scan it. Open it in mspaint, hit file>save as, then save it as a .jpeg... different name or over top of itself.

As far as anonymous e-mail, best bet: yahoo.

This is obviously beyond your skillset. I can't possibly see how you can be spoonfed instructions on how to do this any easier. Quit.
