I'm gonna park my gas hog for a while and start driving my Cavalier more often. 30 MPG combined driving is a lot better than 16 MPG I get from the Explorer.

If gas prices were stable at 2.00/gallon, I wouldn't complain. But I hate when they fall to 1.80/gallon, then creep up to nearly double that in a few months. Hell we're matching prices from the Katrina period, and there's no hurricanes going on right now nor any pipelines broken.

Some idiot on the news from some oil company had the nerve to say "We're recovering from Katrina". Well fuck, you raised the fucking prices then, so what the fuck are you recovering from?

I drive 300-350 miles a week in an explorer. I average 20 mpg.

So, I require 15-18 gallons of gas a week.

@ $2.00/gallon, that's $30-$36 /week
@ $2.50/gallon, that's $37.50-$45 /week
@ $3.00/gallon, that's $45-$54 /week

I drive more than most people, and get less mpg than most vehicles. Most people don't drive half of what I do a week. So what, it may cost you ~$10 more a week? Sure, it's worth bitching about because the oil companies are clearing billions and billions and billions of dollars. But cancelling trips where it may cost you $50 more TOTAL, or changing your life to save $3 a week? Give me a break.

I've been driving this pos 1.5l Civic that gets 36mpg -vs- my Mustang turd that gets 22.5mpg. 360 miles for $28 -vs- 330 miles for $43 . Probably have to get a used Jetta diesel to see any decent savings they are supposed to get closer to 50mpg.

Gas has risen to $3.09 a gallon here in the Bay area. I and several others at work have parked our cars and switched to motorcycles as our primary mode of transportation. At 45+ MPG, it only makes sense to use a motorcycle versus a car.
George D., Mountain View, California, $3.09/gallon

Where does this guy work, McDonalds?

I always think it is funny when people buy new cars to get better fuel economy.

Lets say my friend has an RX-7 N/A getting 21mpg

Then he goes out and gets a Prius and finds out it only gets 52mpg

The RX-7 costs $2000 (I'm being nice)

The Prius is supposedly ~$22K. Lets assume he bought it outright without a loan (just to be nice)

His insurence more then doubled, now having to pay that new car rate, at $800 more per a year.

Lets just add three or four years of that ($2K) to our total ($20K).

That means he spent $22K to save money on gas.

At $3 a gallon (regular) that is 7333.3 gallons of gas.

He would have to drive 154,000 miles before he saved even a cent on gas. And the car goes out of warrenty long before then. I would not want to pay to have those battery packs replaced, and I would not want to have to pay dealer prices to get the car fixed whenever it broke.

sheesh...

just get a moped/scooter/low end motorcycle, and stop bitching. :P

besides - my fiance just bought a 97 chevy turbo diesel...and he's usually towing a rather heavy trailer with it. he probably averages 10-12MPG, and diesel is EXPENSIVE right now...so y'all have nothing to complain about. :P

he doesn't live near DC - he lives up here, in Baltimore.

it costs even more, generally, when he's on the road. rest stops typically have more expensive gas, and he's got a big tank. i think he told me that from Baltimore to Wisconsin, it cost $700 or $800 just to keep the truck running.

I paid nothing for the Civic. My friend paid $750 for it so I am saving money right now.... I thought about buying it from him but like you are saying, it would take a year to pay itsself off because I would only be saving $15-20 a week on gas.

My 98 Cavalier cost $1700, gets 30 MPG combined mileage, 35+ on highway stretches and at worst 25-28 in the city.

I'd never buy a brand new daily driver to save gas, let alone a fugly Prius. There's so many used economy cars that'll save you money at the pump. But people think they're doing the environment a favor when they're in their green cars. Not thinking how they're polluting the environment once those batteries have to be replaced, or when the car is junked.

YOU AVERAGE 20 MPG?!?!!?

I've never gotten anywhere close to that in my Explorer, unless i'm doing a lot of interstate driving, which is what you must do a good bit of, at 300+ miles weekly.

Not to mention that some states are beginning to mull over the thought of taxing hybrid cars per mile to make up for the loss of sales in gas.....

Yeah that tax break people are getting is coming to an end. Speaking of tax breaks...

There was a $25k tax break for SUV's 6000lbs and over a few years back for businesses.
