okay as most of you know i have had numerous problems with my beetle but now i have another one . my speedomometer (sp) isnt working right so i took it to vw and they said it was only one of two things : the speed sensor or a gear in my tranny. so they changed the speed sensor (200 bucks ) and said that it should work fine bc they have changed those thousands of times and only that gear like twice in 20+ years. well with my luck its the gear which they first told me it would be about 1k bucks and take it 4-6 weeks to get there then a few days to install it . now they said that they can't just replace that gear but they gotta do the WHOLE tranny. but they said don't worry its only around 4k (im thinking only??? thats a piss load of $$) so my parents are thinking about letting me trade it for something so i went to car max and they had a 2002 lancer oz rally edition with 36k miles or a 98 civic ex 2 door coupe with 39k miles on it that i liked. which one or what kind of car would be good for me (i drive like 1k a week so something with good gas milage)

the civic would be better on gas but the lancer would be a whole lot nice more parts or i should say better performance parts avali. but thats just my opinion

First thing I would do is take that car to another mechanic. It could VERY easily just be a loose ground or a loose wire. I'm assuming your out of warrenty...so NEVER go back to the dealership. There are several mechanics (at least in Greenville) who are much better. The dealership is just trying to get money from you...is your transmission still working properly? (Is it still shifting? Does it make any grinding noises?)

sorry ur having so much trouble with ur beatle. maybe u should get some friends in charlotte and cruise around there and go see those u left in ga only one weekend a month. and i agree with the previous post, unless it's warrenty work, never go to the dealer. 1k to change the speedo gear, does the tranny have to be disassembled to do this? even if so, i still can't see it costing that much. sounds like these ppl r out to screw u over, maybe cause ur female, and that does happen. too often these mechanics use the "trial and error" method to fix things cause they're too lazy to actually diagnose the problem.
