Ask your county and city clerks office.

Haha, that's worthless. Nobody knows anything in the government. Call the local small business association instead. Chances are all you need is a sales tax packet and business license.

SBA will work better 9 out of 10 times in this region and I imagine it will be the same elsewhere.

City business license (and your location will have to be in the appropriate zone to get one approved); Employer ID number (EIN) which functions as your business' payroll and remittance ID; and it's a good idea to form a corporation (inc. or ltd., same thing) or limited liability company (LLC) to protect yourself and your personal assets in case someone misuses your product or slips on your walkway and injures themselves and takes litigious action.

LLC seems to be the most popular and smartest setup right now. You can get by without an EIN if you only use subcontractors (also very common right now). If you do decide to use subcontractors be sure you read up on the law so as not to create an employee situation inadvertently.

Having an EIN makes it easier to open and maintain a business chequing account (very convenient) and shows the IRS you're serious about running an above-board business, not a grey market fly-by-nighter.

never started one. My friend's wife did. Selling high-end clothing near a bunch of mansions. After three months, they own a hummer3.

Most SBs I've encountered use SS# instead of EIN without any problems.

I've already got my EIN and a state sales tax exempt number for purchases. I'm starting a small part-time auto repair business out of my home. I've checked the state web page about a business license but there is no info. My next step is to check with the SBA. I am also going to apply for a loan through the SBA so I was going to talk with them anyways. Thanks for the info. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

double-check the zoning in your city/town. If you start up a homebased auto repair biz, and neighbours complain about a few cars in your driveway, the city can shut you down and fine you for operating a business in a residential zone.

I'm already checking into that. I'm not going to start until I've got all my bases covered. The last thing I want is my "side" business to cost me lost of money.
