Hans Schiller Spatlese of Austlese. It's cheap and made with extremely fine grapes.

Go to an upscale grocery store and find their wine department and ask around.Don't be afraid to let them know this is your first time drinking wine. They will turm you on to several labels that you will a like and may even offer some tastings.

I like the 2001 Coastal Reserve merlot. It's only $11.00 a bottle.

remember:

merlot with red meat
white whine with white meat

Liars Dice.

Don't know what it costs normal people though. My grandfather and uncle get it for free because they work for the vintner occasionally. They claim, however, that it is $45 a case.

Damn I'm forgetful tonight. The thing that makes it special is that its one of the top rated wines in CA. It does battle with the mighty Seghesio and Gallo wines, for less than half the price.
