COMMENT:

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the
most prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the
largest middle class in the world, and mom stayed home to raise the
kids.

What Happened? Who are we going to blame?

great thread

blame the liberals, who deny personal responsibility, are lazy, and want big gov't to fix everything

You've been hitting that bottle again haven't you? :40oz:

BTW, things cost a "LOT" more than they used to, and we consume a lot more than we did 100 years ago, as the population has increased, along with everything else. We need taxes to pay for these nice roads you drive on everyday. And all those high powered Pentium IV desktops that elementary schools have don't come for free.

Who are we going to blame?

There's a Japanese saying:

Fix the problem, not the blame.

I don't care whose fault it is, I want to know how to change it.

Typically is it just a question that I enjoy asking because it is so typical of someone to ask, even more so in todays culture. But I do believe it has some merrit as long as something is done with the answer.

what happened? industrialization.

america used to be mainly an agrarian country. think about it. when the constitution was being drafted, washington DC was the largest city in the nation. it was six square blocks. even one hundred years later, in 1905, the USA was nothing like the USA of today.

we don't live in that world anymore. nor was that world the nice and comfortable world you so easily paint it.

1905. middle class? right. you were either a poor bloke in the country, a poor factory worker in a major city, a miner (these three comprising about 99% of the population), or one rich lucky motherfucker.

most prosperous in the world? US didn't become a serious world power until the aftermath of the two world wars. in 1905 i would say the most prosperous nation in the world was probably somewhere in europe.

mom stayed home to raise the kids? that's right. limited upwards mobility and limited rights for women. this is pre-women's suffrage as well. mom was expected to stay home and raise the kids, her wishes be damned.

100 years ago we didn't piss money away to every country in the world. We weren't the world's police then. We were another nation, that really wasn't considered to be anything special. What is America now? The world's crutch. I'm not totally against giving aid to foreign countries, but it's done entirely too loosely. There's homeless, starving people in the nation's capital. There's people breaking their backs daily to feed their families in the nation's capital. There's lazy, capable of working "people" in the nation's capital that do nothing but figure out a way to leech off of the government and expect the government to not only assist them, but give them the luxuries of those who made wise decisions and worked hard. So the people that make these decisions aren't ignorant of the facts, it's all around them. There's an abundance of illegal aliens running around everywhere. Some say they don't hurt anything, I say otherwise. Not to be racist, but it's a simple fact of common knowledge and observation; there are mexicans everywhere. Do they use our roads and resources that our taxes pay for? Here in Virginia each gallon of gas has 38 cents of tax. To repair, build, and maintain roadways. People using those resources that don't contribute by paying their state and federal taxes are upping our cost. Illegals may purchase gas, but not all of the government operated monopoly of "state maintenance" comes from gas purchases. I simply used that as an example.

So where are we left? We let lazy, ignorant people leech off of the government. We send billions of dollars in foreign aid annually to places that do nothing for us. In fact, some charge us more for oil than they do "friendly" countries. I'm sure there's more the public doesn't know about. Then we have millions of illegal aliens in our country, using our resources that we have to pay to upkeep. Face it, we're socialist. The common hard-working individual can no longer prosper due to having to support everyone else. Everyone works for the better of the nation. Sure, you can buy more if you work longer, but your money is cut into deeply with taxes. Vehicles... You pay taxes when buying a vehicle, you pay taxes to use the vehicle on public roadways, you pay taxes for everything you purchase for the vehicle, and then you get charged personal property taxes to own the vehicle. The common, hard-working American works everyday to support other people. It's wrong and the government is completely corrupted. 99.9% of all politicians are halfway crooked, but typically it's the democratic, liberal, politicians that come up with all of this crap. Some people speculate that we're headed toward socialism. I think we're already there, it just has a sweet sugar coating of "liberty, justice, and all" ideas and misconceptions.

Everyone works for the better of the nation.

Nope, that would be noble and all, but most who make the largest amounts of money work for the betterment of themselves and their family. Off-shore bank accounts are the new sliced bread.

Real Estate Tax is there

No, its called the Estate Tax.

The estate tax is on the money left behind by the wealthy when they die.

Reminder: Most relatively simple estates (cash, publicly-traded securities, small amounts of other easily-valued assets, and no special deductions or elections, or jointly-held property) with a total value under $1,000,000 do not require the filing of an estate tax return.

Q: What is the Estate Tax?

The Estate Tax is a tax on your right to transfer property at your death. It consists of an accounting of everything you own or have certain interests in at the date of death (Refer to Form 706). The fair market value of these items is used, not necessarily what you paid for them or what their values were when you acquired them. The total of all of these items is your "Gross Estate." The includible property may consist of Cash and Securities, Real Estate, Insurance, Trusts, Annuities, Business interests and other assets.

Once you have accounted for the Gross Estate, certain deductions (and in special circumstances, reductions to value) are allowed in arriving at your "Taxable Estate." These deductions may include Mortgages and other Debts, Estate Administration expenses, property that passes to Surviving Spouses and Qualified Charities. The value of some operating business interests or farms may be reduced for estates that qualify.

After the net amount is computed, the value of lifetime taxable gifts (beginning with gifts made in 1977) is added to this number and the tax is computed. The tax is then reduced by the available unified credit. Presently, the amount of this credit reduces the computed tax so that only total taxable estates and lifetime gifts that exceed $1,000,000 will actually have to pay tax. In its current form, the estate tax only affects the wealthiest 2% of all Americans.

There is no such thing as corruption, only "leverage"-Powell while with the Bush Administration.

I got news for you FAGGOT, you would be suprised how many people would change their opinion on an issue for the right amount of money.
