I have a brand new computer, and I want to make it so you have to have a password to be able to get to windows. Any ideas?

start > control panel > user accounts

select the account you want a password for

or

start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management > local users and groups > users

then

right click (what ever user) > set password

Thanks for the help. I could have figured it out myself, but I knew somebody here would have to know how to do it.

Best off using a BIOS password at boot up. Anything else and they can boot from a CD/floppy and bypass everything.

Yup... and they can't get around that unless they pop the cover off and reset it with a jumper...

How do you do that?

just stick with the windows password. though if someone logs in through Safe Mode they can reset your windows password.

How do you do that?

Whenever you first turn the computer on, unless you have a piece of shit assembly line pc, it will show you what's going on with the cmos/bios.. white letters on black background...

You should see "hit delete to enter setup"... it's usually delete..on some mother boards, f1...other things... it should tell you though

as far as once you're in there, all of them are different varying by motherboard. so, you'll have to look for "bios password" or something along those lines...

don't change shit else unless you know what you're doing.

If you're really paranoid, many PC's now come with a loop for a padlock on the back that will make that jumper rather hard to get to.

It all really comes down to how long you think this person is going to have alone with your PC and how badly you think they want it.

'cause no one will ever find your fingerprints anywhere and they're so easy to change if someone does :)

Who's gonna come in my house, to my desk, and have one of my phalangies in order to log on to my computer?

And if a thief stole my computer, they wouldn't be smart enough to unlock my bios, and I don't have a jumper bypass either.
