The Transformation: Friday & Saturday

I'm trying to get all this done before Deal's Gap. Wish me luck! For those of you that don't know what my plans are -

My Goals before Deal's Gap

"fix" the rust
install wide-body
paint car
install turbo kit from fb II
install new suspension

Friday:

That evening, my buddy Minda (streetrx7 on this site) went with me to my house to pick up the RX-7 and the wide-body-kit and suspension. I had to drive my Dad's F150 pickup to take the parts to his place. We live about 60 miles apart. His place is more suitable for us to do this work at since he has a "car-port" and I don't. He drove the RX-7 down. When we got to my place, the RX-7 would not start. The battery was dead. So we jumped it and went on our way. We stopped to get gas, and well, the battery was still dead. So we had to jump it again in the crowded gas station.

Saturday:

We ran errands, and got the rest of the various parts we needed. Got the car up on jackstands and started to work. First we evaluated exactly how bad the rust is. As you can see in the pics, it is quite extensive. Yeah, this is gonna be fun. Then we started pulling the rear suspension out and dropped the axle. That's about as far as we got. Will continue this week and update as available. Now for some pics.

Just so you get a good idea of what I'm about to jump headfirst into, here are pics of the rust that has to be fixed on BOTH the rear fenders/fender-wells.

http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/908/thetransformation0170dc.th.jpg (http://img47.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thetransformation0170dc.jpg)

http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/1522/thetransformation0188qq.th.jpg (http://img47.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thetransformation0188qq.jpg)

http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/2173/thetransformation0190fs.th.jpg (http://img47.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thetransformation0190fs.jpg)

We couldn't push or pry the old rubber bushings out, so we decided to burn them out. Yeah, that was fun, and it smelled great too!

The Transformation:

Minda here. updating for Adam.

Monday:

Basically just did more rust analysis. Discovered more rust and started removing the affected areas.

Turbo kit came in!!!! WOOOOO HOOOO!! YEEE haw!!! ahem. anyway. this was Zac's (fb II on this site) turbo kit. Here are some pics of Adam with turbo and intercooler.

Wednesday:

Great weather and some tunes from Rammstein make me work work work. Took apart the front end and as you can see in the pics, there is almost no rust up front! The rust that was on the old fenders was apparently just surface rust. But it doesn't matter since the widebody fenders will replace them.

Ok time for another update. Not much happening Saturday, just finished up cutting the rust off the body. While I was cutting rust away in the rear fender well, I found a mouse nest! lol. Those little buggers crawled up inside there and built a nest! ha ha.

Just removed everything possible on the driver's side of the Engine bay, cleaned it, and prepped engine bay for paint. We started painting, but it was apparently too cold, so it kept "running".

Again, I apologize about the lack of updatedness this thread has been suffering from. We have been working on the car, but mostly on some of the small stuff and the rust. Obviously, I didn't meet my goal of making Deal's Gap, but cest la vie. Oh well, maybe next year.

Well, the rust is rapidly disappearing! No more holes in the car! woot!

I am trying to convince to put a presilencer on it but he is not listening I mean a 3" turbo back to a sthraith flow throu muffler I dont think if that is such a good idea but hten again can it be any louder than it used to be I doubt that. I have a Header presilencer and a similar muffler on mine and I love how it sounds.

Ha ha! no dude. It's just kind of a running joke Minda and I make because I've had the car for so long and its been in his car port for so long. We are shooting for mid - late June.

"Extremely loud", huh? KEWEL!!! Meh, I guess if it is too loud, I can put the silencer back in the can. If that's not good enough, I guess I'll look at getting a presilencer at that time. It was pretty loud before. Like, you really could here me coming from a few miles away! No joke, ask Minda!

Well, today we finally made some SUBSTANTIAL progress! I'll be the first to tell you that it sure feels good for a change.

The first thing we did this morning was make the lousiest attempt ever at trying to get a tow dolly. I should have called to reserve one earlier this week, but it completely skipped my mind. Anyway, we finally found one and picked up the GSL-SE parts car that I need for the LSD, disc brakes, correct bolt pattern for my wheels, and hopefully some headlight motors that ACTUALLY work! As you can see in the pix, it was in really bad shape, hence it's "parts car" status. lol It felt kinda weird to get parts and actually use them the SAME DAY - not store them for months on end. lol :)

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/3117/rx7partscarpickup0035la.th.jpg (http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rx7partscarpickup0035la.jpg) http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/7954/rx7partscarpickup0059qy.th.jpg (http://img131.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rx7partscarpickup0059qy.jpg)

Here we are putting in some of the polyurethane suspension bushings. Minda (rotarycrazy) and Masin (dregg100) decided that the grease we smeered on the bushings prior to installation was consistent in look, color, texture, and feel to that of "whale sperm". I'm still trying to figure out exactly how they became experts in whale sperm, but it sounds like an interesting story that we didn't exactly have time for . . .

Thats me (Adam aka. "Skylance") on the left , Masin (dregg100) in the middle, and Minda (rotarycrazy) on the right.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5081/rx7partscarpickup0086sq.th.jpg (http://img132.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rx7partscarpickup0086sq.jpg) http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/797/rx7partscarpickup0093ps.th.jpg (http://img52.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rx7partscarpickup0093ps.jpg)

http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/4479/rx7partscarpickup0118rw.th.jpg (http://img46.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rx7partscarpickup0118rw.jpg)

We had some trouble with the mosquitos trying to carry us away to their vampire lairs, so we got one of those repellent candles out. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown to us, the wicks would not stay lit. So, we ummmm, "fixed" it! woot!! Eh, whatever works, right?

Another weekend with a substantial amount of progress!! woot! We were aiming to have it started by now, but unfortunately, that was just not possible :( The good news is, we got the stainless steel oil cooler lines installed, mounted the oil cooler, mounted the radiator, finished the intercooler piping, and the BOV is mounted and installed!! Thanks to Masin's buddy for the weld! Sorry I never met him, and I don't know his name, but I like to give credit where credit is due . . .

Meh, to each his own. I do see your point. That's exactly the reason that I didn't go with the REALLY FREAKIN' Wide body kit - Like the Mariah. It actually came down to 1). Get a wide-body, or 2). leave the wheels and tires sticking out the side of the car like 6 inches AND do a bunch of mock up work where the rust DESTROYED the lower portions of the fenders. Personally, I like the wide body look a LOT better than leaving the wheels sticking that far out.

Say No To Pistons

how wide are the wheels going to be? its going to look more exotic if it had 13inch wide rear wheels and 9 inch wide front lol.. seriously!

8 inches wide in the front, 9 inches wide in the back.

Yeah, I wish I could put the 13's in the back! lol. Unfortunately, that would push the wheels out past my widebody fenders! To fix this, I would have to put on the REALLY WIDE body that we both dislike!

Meah, maybe a different offset on the 13 inch wheels would help, but there's still only so much that can do.

hmm wtf.. that fender stretches out what? 5-6 inches? so lets say you can get 6 inch wide rims in the back of a stock fb with stock body w/o the tires sticking out.. now add the body kit and you have 5-6 inches... that means 6+5 = 11inches! zomg!

Skylance
06-06-2006, 09:32 PM
Meh, I don't recall exactly how much they stretch out, but right now, the wheels come almost to the edge ( less than an inch ) of the wide body fenders. So, I am happy now. :) It wasn't too extreme, AND the wheels fit nicely under there. Though, maybe at another time i'll start looking at different wheels, but now is not that time. :)

that was my wifes car. It would start for some weard reason and once we found it it was really stupid. It has safety swich on the clutch so you dont start the car without presing the clutch in well the button to press the switch down broke of and it would start that was quite anoying.

Again, i apologize for not updating this thread as often as i should. We have been working diligently on it - i swear. Just so many LITTLE things to work out. We finally got most of them worked out (like the brakes, etc); most importantly - the issue with the FPR allowing WAY too much fuel through and very SEVERELY flooding the motor. Come to find out, we had the return line hooked up wrong!!! lol.

Anyway, the car does finally run AND drive on it's own. Now i need to register it and get it too a muffler shop! lol

It felt sooooo good to be driving it again! Even if it was a short drive. All this effort, time, money, blood, sweat, and tears (did I mention money?) is most definitely worth it! I can't believe it is all finally paying off! I'm not out of the woods yet though. it is running a little rough still and it seems to hesitate just as I am hitting boost. On top of that, my tach isn't working. So, if y'all have some advice on that, i'd be happy to hear it! :)

Anyway, here are some pix of me driving it for the first time since FEBRUARY!!!!!

I'm thinking that the only thing i don't like is the corners of the front bumper. Been thinking about trimming them off for a while now. If they went, the bumper would look more round, I think it would look more sleek (and less ricey). Then again, i could take my usual anal retentive / demented approach and keep them for the sole purpose of making it a rice sleeper. Meening - It looks like rice, so everyone rags on it, until i blow them away. :D

I filed my taxes and got a NICE return. My wife and I took the guy the rest of the money that I owed him - $1,100.00! So, supposedly, he'll get back to work on it by next week! I'm so stoked!

Oh, and we are definitely gonna 'fix' the front bumper. Double checked with the guy about that today while I was there, and he is gonna work on something to make it less nasty. :)
