Here's the quote that made them pissed
The pope quoted from a book recounting a conversation between 14th-century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and a Persian scholar on the truths of Christianity and Islam.
“The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war,†Benedict said. “He said, I quote, ’Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.â€â€™
The pope did not explicitly agree with nor repudiate the comment.
In Britain, the head of the Muslim Council, a body representing 400 Muslim groups, said the emperor’s views quoted by the pope were bigoted.

rtryb2200 09-15-2006, 07:03 PM Out of all seriousness why can't everone just live with what other people say and not get all bent out of shape. Maybe the muslims are insecure about their religion and thats why they get all uptight when someone says something negative about it.
rtryb2200 09-15-2006, 07:11 PM Well I understand that, but in the article there was no mention that the Pope agreed or disagreed with the statement. People get to extreme about stuff like this and then it makes world news.
rtryb2200 09-15-2006, 07:34 PM agreed about the assasination...I believe he is visiting Turkey in the near future
vrooom305 09-16-2006, 02:45 PM I kind of like this new pope....he's tells it like it is, quite un-catholic, and his knowledge of the scriptures and sound doctrine blows John Paul II right out of the water
which means he won't last very long
one of the few times I'll have to agree with ya.....this pope rocks....
skydivr7673 09-18-2006, 10:41 PM first off, it speaks volumes that only the way-off extremists are shouting for war, while the rest of Islam is not. This is a distinction that must be accounted for, and seems to be popping up more and more in recent years.
Second, it is disgusting that the pope feels the need to apologize for simply quoting accurately a historical conversation. If the radicals didnt blow up the world when newspapers intentionally made fun of them with the cartoons, I would be hard-pressed to believe that they would do so now, when even many muslims have not agreed with the call for war....
skydivr7673 09-19-2006, 06:23 AM you couldnt be more off on that one if you turned out the lights and typed with your toes. But thats cool....do yo thang...
skydivr7673 09-19-2006, 06:20 PM coming from someone who doesn't have a clue what the Quran says, and has not studied it

1--if all you use is obviously biased sources, your own pov will obviously be biased, Marky....
2--you obviously dont have a clue about what I know or what I have studied, either....
skydivr7673 09-19-2006, 09:33 PM direct quotes from the Quran, pretty hard to argue with...but then, that's you
In the EXACT SAME MANNER, one could quote things from the Old Testament, and say that this is instruction that was meant for all good Christians to carry out to this day, Marky....
Tell me, when you run around blasting away at others, claiming that they "cannot just take snippets of scripture to get to the whole meaning", what makes you think you have the right or the intelligence to do the same with the Quran??? HMMMM.....
rtryb2200 09-19-2006, 11:38 PM sooo....the pope apoligized guess we'll see what he comes up with next...obviously he doesn't want to be assisnated
