Has anyone ever done anything like this before?
Any pointers? suggestions? or comments?
I've had a few beers here but I'm convinced I'll follow through with this.

Alex-7 03-12-2008, 09:27 PM So I don't have shit to do for a few weeks and I'd like to build a very rustic log cabin. Mostly to get drunk in, maybe set up my still, shoot guns etc. Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Any pointers? suggestions? or comments? I've had a few beers here but I'm convinced I'll follow through with this. Ark2 03-12-2008, 09:31 PM I built a pole barn with my father a couple of years ago, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. czarofzar 03-12-2008, 09:45 PM wouldnt know bud. Sorry Alex-7 03-12-2008, 09:50 PM How hard could it be? I'll have a chainsaw, and there are lots of woods where I'm planning to build. Two weeks worth of work with another guy helping can get it done I'm sure. wotnartd 03-12-2008, 09:57 PM You need to dry the timbers you want to use. Alex-7 03-12-2008, 10:00 PM Is that a fact? I will not have time to do that. Why would it be necessary? wotnartd 03-12-2008, 10:02 PM Is that a fact? I will not have time to do that. Why would it be necessary? The timbers shrink and deform. Alex-7 03-12-2008, 10:06 PM I'm gonna chance it. How much could they shrink when nailed in place..... wotnartd 03-12-2008, 10:08 PM ...Go have fun. If nothing else, you'll have a great bonfire. Alex-7 03-12-2008, 10:16 PM Hell yes. If it holds together for a year or two I'll be a happy camper. wotnartd 03-12-2008, 10:20 PM Hell yes. If it holds together for a year or two I'll be a happy camper. I'd say do some research, because it could be kinda dangerous if it wasn't done right. Alex-7 03-12-2008, 10:27 PM Yeah, been looking around. A cave in would suck ass. I think I've even procured a free wood burning stove! Tofuball 03-13-2008, 07:37 AM I'm gonna chance it. How much could they shrink when nailed in place..... A whole lot. Enough to shatter other pieces, windows, and skulls. Want pics? :P TJGoSurf 03-13-2008, 12:49 PM Build a sweat lodge. We built a log cabin using nothing but traditional methods, it sucks, there is a reason we have power tools, precut lumber and all these other things. And you can get chicks naked in a sweat lodge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweat_lodge http://www.welcomehome.org/rob/sweat/sweat.html Supper 03-14-2008, 01:00 PM get the DVD "Alone in the Wilderness" (IIRC) Its all about a guy that moved to alaska and hand built a cabin. It took him 2 summers to do it right, but its still standing and in usable condition 50+ years after it was built. I've helped build 2 cabins, 1 from a kit and 1 "traditional." Thank the lord we had chainsaws and other powertools. Alex-7 03-14-2008, 03:14 PM get the DVD "Alone in the Wilderness" (IIRC) Its all about a guy that moved to alaska and hand built a cabin. No way in hell it'll turn out like his though. that guy built some crazy shit. I'll have chainsaws and such. Do you have any pics of the ones you've helped with? Herschel 03-14-2008, 04:32 PM If you are serious about doing this and you don't have access to heavy equipment then I would suggest investing in lots of heavy rope and some big ass pulleys... Alex-7 03-14-2008, 06:08 PM we don't have trees big enough to require that stuff here in ks. Supper 03-15-2008, 12:55 PM "one man's wilderness" Awesome, it's kinda what made me want to do this. No way in hell it'll turn out like his though. that guy built some crazy shit.different movie, same guy. http://www.dickproenneke.com/ Do you have any pics of the ones you've helped with?No pics that I can remember, and if there are any they would be 35mm. It was a long time ago. puntorotary 03-16-2008, 03:53 PM i have always wanted one but im a broke fool so ill just keep dreaming, but they look awesome. Alex-7 03-16-2008, 03:54 PM I doubt this one will cost more that time and a couple hundred bucks. I'm going scouting for a spot to build it tomorrow. Alex-7 03-16-2008, 03:58 PM A whole lot. Enough to shatter other pieces, windows, and skulls. Want pics? :P kinda:bigthumb: puntorotary 03-16-2008, 05:55 PM well thats good, i thought they were mad expensive. Tofuball 03-16-2008, 09:01 PM kinda:bigthumb: Okie, next time I am out there I'll get some. Alex-7 03-16-2008, 10:19 PM out where? wotnartd 03-16-2008, 10:23 PM I think Tofuball can play the banjo pretty well. Watch your cornhole. Alex-7 03-20-2008, 09:07 PM Went scouting around for a place to build the other day and found a pretty good one. also found what I think is a natural water spring right near by. Lost of trees and such, also found a creek bed with TONS of rock in it. almost makes me wanna try to mortar togeather a little dwelling outta rock. Here's a few pics of the area. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a289/Alex-7/jhuiph.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a289/Alex-7/cfgjhyt.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a289/Alex-7/fdgbtgre.jpg wotnartd 03-20-2008, 09:09 PM I see this ending well. Cosby 03-20-2008, 09:13 PM That sounds like a cool idea. I'm sure it can't be that hard. The wood might warp but if you have some good nails in it I don't see why it wouldnt be fine. Alex-7 03-20-2008, 09:13 PM I see this ending well. Sarcasm??? Yeah wood warping and finding suitable logs will be a bitch. I'm really thinking about using stone..... wotnartd 03-20-2008, 09:14 PM Just be careful, we need all the people we have here. Tofuball 03-20-2008, 10:34 PM Just be careful, we need all the people we have here. Hey, I'm increasing our numbers, why wont the rest of you be fruitful and multiply? Cosby 03-21-2008, 01:06 AM Build the bottom with stone and the top with wood. I've seen that done before. dano670 03-21-2008, 02:10 AM I am wondering how you make the roof water tight. Or are you going to use tin or something else? rtryb2200 03-21-2008, 02:14 AM Tarps!! Alex-7 03-21-2008, 02:37 AM Build the bottom with stone and the top with wood. I've seen that done before. That's been my plan thus far. Alex-7 03-21-2008, 02:42 AM I am wondering how you make the roof water tight. Or are you going to use tin or something else? I've done some research on thatch roof making (grass weaving) If made right they can last and remain water tight a long time. It's certainly a lost art though. I doubt I'll be able to pull it off like people did 500 years ago. Alex-7 12-18-2009, 12:53 PM I ACTUALLY started this not too long ago. Just need it to warm up a bit to resume progress :) http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs003.snc3/11044_607988135475_73407164_36209853_4840935_n.jpg wolfafterurazz 12-18-2009, 01:19 PM Do you own a chain saw? have a beaver for a pet? I know a friend who did it not long ago with small pine about 4 inches across and it's real nice only thing is he didn't have it inspected and now they wont hook power up to it. Alex-7 12-18-2009, 02:17 PM I don't intend to have power in mine. Dirt floor too. Been chainsawing mostly. Doing it all with an axe would be brutal! I've used modern mortar in the foundaition and fireplace also (over a thousand pounds of dry mix so far....) Cosby 12-18-2009, 03:10 PM Damn, that's really cool. How much more do you have done now? Any pics? Alex-7 12-18-2009, 03:15 PM Still looks about like that. I have a bunch of logs cut and waiting now though. Soon as this cold shit eases up it'll start getting taller. the land I got is 45 min from home so that makes in kinda a biatch. it's been pretty fun project though. amazing how much time went into finding all the rocks for the foundation. now that that's done it should go quicker! Salem 12-22-2009, 08:53 PM lol it took me a week and a half to build my shed with 3 friends rtryb2200 12-29-2009, 02:49 PM Let's see some progress....spend a weekend there in a tent in the middle of it, you'll get something done! Alex-7 12-30-2009, 12:07 PM Man we've had sofa king much snow here! (for Kansas anyway) this bitch is hon hold till I see dry ground :-< ComradeGiant 12-30-2009, 04:29 PM If my first year here in CO is any indication, you'll see dry ground sometime in May. Alex-7 12-30-2009, 11:04 PM What are you doing in fort collins? rtryb2200 12-31-2009, 04:23 PM If I was in Ft Collins I would be drinking all the New Belgium Beers I could!! We used to have to drive 90 Miles to buy Fat Tire, thankfully we can get it here now ComradeGiant 01-05-2010, 12:01 PM In typical late fashion: I'm working at Jax Outdoor gear. My wife (got married last summer) just finished her Masters in English and is teaching composition and literature as an adjunct at Colorado State. And I do drink as much New Belgian as I can, though Fort Collins Brewery has some gems too. Cosby 01-05-2010, 01:13 PM I wish I could get colorado beer :( ComradeGiant 01-05-2010, 01:51 PM Someday, when I have a car up to the task again, I'll bring you some. rtryb2200 01-05-2010, 03:22 PM You can always reinstate the beer swap....I have no issues sending any, just have issues receiving it (ALEX!) wotnartd 01-05-2010, 03:34 PM If I was in Ft Collins I would be drinking all the New Belgium Beers I could!! We used to have to drive 90 Miles to buy Fat Tire, thankfully we can get it here now I love their 1885. I could drink gallons of it. ComradeGiant 01-05-2010, 06:55 PM Trippel is my new summer beer. That slight sweetness makes it unique. Alex-7 01-05-2010, 09:18 PM You can always reinstate the beer swap....I have no issues sending any, just have issues receiving it (ALEX!) FUCK! PM me your address again! srsly :40oz: rtryb2200 01-05-2010, 09:26 PM LOL....I just like to keep giving you shit man....No worries on my part wolfafterurazz 01-06-2010, 05:50 PM I don't intend to have power in mine. Dirt floor too. Been chainsawing mostly. Doing it all with an axe would be brutal! I've used modern mortar in the foundaition and fireplace also (over a thousand pounds of dry mix so far....) What are you using to go between the logs? he used plaster straw and animal hair mixed. His kinda looks like little house on the parrie.........only that wasn't a log cabin. What about termites? ComradeGiant 01-06-2010, 06:01 PM Plaster and moss works well. Stood up to the BC winters at least. wolfafterurazz 01-06-2010, 06:06 PM I know it was alot of work and because he didn't get the permits he'll never be able to leagally live in it. That sucks! rocky 01-28-2010, 06:03 AM I will not have time to do that to built up cameron123 01-30-2010, 05:12 AM Build a sweat lodge.
