five years ago i was working a dead end job at AIG with no career goals or prospects. i was on the cusp of quitting (which i eventually did), with no clear goal in mind.

Five years ago I was celebrating my 3rd year of marriage with the woman I lived with for 7 years prior (...so a bit like the tenth year of marriage, I suppose), and my first year of being a father. We had made oodles of money the two previous years, and even though we were living off of that for much of '04, that taste of success gave us false confidence for the future. 2005's when the bottom dropped out for me and our hopes of buying a house were dashed.

Our relationship is still as strong as before, and we're still hopeful, but it's definitely a struggle.
