There is an increasing dichotomy between Islam and Christianity. However looking at it from a historical standpoint, you can see Christianity taking the same path, the end result being the fairly benign Christianity of today.

The Christianity of the past, however, was represented heavily by groups like the Knights Templar, Jesuits, Puritans, and other groups now considered "fringe elements", that were very much of the "convert or die" mentality.

I think that Islam, given the same amount of time given to Christianity, will mellow out and converge with the mainstream.
