BATMAN 11-19-2006, 12:23 PM I just got a 2.5lbs 17" Magnesium hard tail, magnesium wheels.
As you can imagine, I'm looking at building a Hardtail with as much magnesium components as possible.
Magnesium has lighter than Ti and AL, rigid, yet has awesome dampening qualities.
it's also, relatively inexpensive.
I'm going to run the SRAM XO grip shifters for this one and my second moutain bike project will be a full suspension, preferrably a 4-bar link Horst suspension, but maybe a Cannondale Lefty will have the new Shimano XTR - consider to be the best mountain bike components.
The irony is that for the hardtail I'm having a hard time selecting the right tubeless tires.
I need something for asphault, trail riding, some lite-XC, but not jumping or stunt works.
Any thoughts?
BATMAN 11-19-2006, 01:33 PM which LA?
Say No To Pistons 11-19-2006, 01:48 PM Los Angeles obviously.
Animal 11-19-2006, 02:29 PM Magnesium also burns very well.
In '01, the company I worked for would go to scrapyards and pick up metal rather than buying it from suppliers. We stumbled across some metal, only number on it was "8000". It looked like aluminum, although nobody had heard of 8000-series aluminum. Brought it back to the shop, threw it on teh lathe... tool gets hot.... things go boom... dry-chem system fired... spent the rest of teh week cleaning up the yellow powdery shit out of *everything*. Looked online and found out there's no such thing as 8000-series aluminum, but there is 8000-series magnesium.
Since then we've been buying material from suppliers.

Pics, links, specs, brand?
'07 XTR shit is pretty bad ass.
What are your thoughts for a fork? SID world Cup weighs under 3lbs.
I don't know anything about tubeless tires.
Cosby 11-20-2006, 11:29 AM This is like me posting about kayaking :)

I'm going to run a rigid fork. If I can't find magnesium, I'll probably get titanium.
Alex-7 11-20-2006, 11:52 AM I ride all rigid too. I like to know what the front end is doing, and it's WAY faster on road/climbing. Though I'm very intruiged with the Fox forks "terralogic" inertia avtive damping things. (basically the same as those edelbrock IAS shocks. Don't you have those on your truck?) full automatic lock up on slow compressions, compliand on fast ones. I think the '07 litespeeds will come stock with them.
"hardtail" led me to believe you where going with front susspension.
Tell me more about your frame.
BATMAN 11-20-2006, 01:03 PM It's Litech Magnesium frame that I bought from Ebay new, with yellow powder coat.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=220048231010
For $95 and under 3lbs I simply couldn't refuse.
Alex-7 11-20-2006, 01:12 PM Woah. Yeah that's worth a try.
As soon as he lists a 19-21 inch i'll buy one.
Do you have yours yet? What do you think of it up close.
BATMAN 11-20-2006, 01:16 PM Yeah, I got it and for $50~ I bought a used one in great condition for a friend that wanted one too.
I went to pick it outta the and almost hit myself on the head, assuming that it was heavier than it looks.
The welds are pretty decent, bottom bracket threads are machined well with no corrosion.
It's one of those frames, that if it were made in USA, or titanium it would have coast more than 10x.
Do a search, I saw a few 19" frames on there.

Yeah, it's the same technology on my IAS shocks that I have on the truck.
It works really well. When I'm going over bumpy roads it softens up. I just don't get why FOX charged so much for it. $900?~
Alex-7 11-20-2006, 01:26 PM Spendy and pund heavier than the SID..........
Cool though.
Alex-7 11-20-2006, 01:32 PM Do a search, I saw a few 19" frames on there.
Couldn't find any.
Just this from a different guy: http://cgi.ebay.com/MAGNESIUM-SARACEN-KILI-FRAME-2-9LBS-DISC-V-4-SIZES_W0QQitemZ320051430528QQihZ011QQcategoryZ2267 9QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Maybe I'll email the other guy and ask him to list a 19 buy it now.
BATMAN 11-20-2006, 02:45 PM not sure if I would buy outta the country.
I did get a bib from the UK. Got lucky that i didn't get fucked.
Alex-7 11-20-2006, 03:22 PM Yeah, I've been owned by the UK before. But at least this guy lets the public view his feedback....ha
I'm gonna get one from the guy in the link you posted.
BATMAN 11-20-2006, 03:41 PM did he reply?
I think he has an inventory of these.....

Not yet.
Glad I'm not hardcore enough to worry about that frame breaking.
What's the expected lifetime? brittle?
Alex-7 11-21-2006, 02:24 PM Not yet.
Sold outta 19's five months ago.........
Ima snatch the first one that shows up.
You should update this thread with your build of your 17.
BATMAN 11-21-2006, 02:59 PM I'm already looking at the Specialized Stumpjumper + Brain Shock and Fox Talas with Horst 4-bar link full suspension frame.
BATMAN 11-21-2006, 04:06 PM lemme guess, u've got alot of anger, some muscles and clogged arteries......... ur a red neck.
Try this Honda instead:

$100T2 11-21-2006, 04:44 PM How many bikes do you own now, Batty?
Alex-7 11-21-2006, 05:02 PM Full Susspension = useless for me or anything around here(of course, here=the mid west). I saw a guy on sunday who was riding a expensive looking F/S Kona. He was working his ass of, bobbing up and down with each pedal stroke and only going about 10mph.........
Is Honda really a leading manufacturer of that stuff?
BATMAN 11-21-2006, 05:05 PM How many bikes do you own now, Batty?
2 bikes.
This is the 3rd one.
I plan on having 4-5 at peak....
BATMAN 11-21-2006, 05:06 PM once you grab a handful of throttle on a CR250 (better yet an older 500) hear that engine rip the morning air with pure two stroke fury, and pull the front wheel up in an extended power wheelie, you will never go back to a pedal bike
talk about a rush....my gosh I do miss it....NC kind of sucks for moto
It's apples and oranges.
there are places that u can't go to legally with a combustion engine.
Besides, when was the last time u've had some serious cardio?
Alex-7 11-21-2006, 05:10 PM once you grab a handful of throttle on a CR250 (better yet an older 500) hear that engine rip the morning air with pure two stroke fury, and pull the front wheel up in an extended power wheelie, you will never go back to a pedal bike

C'mon dude, One has a fucking engine one doesn't.
I have a good time on each. Way different experiance.
I love two strokes though. Snowmobiles and dirt bikes are a blast.
BATMAN 11-21-2006, 05:13 PM As u can see with this thread, without any religious reference what sorta character flaws YZF has.
Alex-7 11-21-2006, 05:38 PM Indeed.
rtryb2200 11-21-2006, 11:14 PM I was looking for a new Mountain bike this year...I really only wanted to spend around 500 bucks but I couldn't find anything that I wanted. Mine that I currently have is like 15 years old, and really sucks riding it to work when I do
meddle 11-21-2006, 11:20 PM Magnesium also burns very well.

Ehh Definatly not a supplier issue. Sounds like in house retardation. I'm suprised some ricer hasn't asked about mag seals to accompany the weekly titanium seal thread.
Ohh and pedaling on a bicycle around in public is gay batman.

Do what I'm doing.
Ur not going to find a more comfortable hardtail that is light and cheap.
Alex-7 11-27-2006, 04:40 PM Bought this over thanksgiving.
A classic, always wanted the Yeti made Homegrown.
Last year rebuild, full XTR, LX cranks....shitty fork.

rtryb2200 04-07-2007, 03:37 AM well this thread is old but I've been looking again and picked this up used to replace my 15 year old bike. I considered buying new but the shops around here do not carry a whole lot. It has been so frickin cold and windy the last few days I have only been short distances but wow what a difference!!
RyanFlemington 04-07-2007, 05:32 AM well, I live in BC, so I have a hard time not mtn biking(though i manage fairly well what with work all the time, now). I ride a 99 norco 250 hardtail, with a doublewide in the rear, and a mavic 221 in the front. Funn stem and seat, and a Marzocchi z1 wedge(set for 6''). Anyone else ride BC/the norhthore?
