Seriously... just finished watching the trailer for "Sunshine" (http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/sunshine/hd/) and the song in it is ripped off of Howard Shore's soundtrack for "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" which was ripped off of Clint Mansel's "Requiem For A Dream."

It chapped my ass when I heard it on the LotR preview and it really chaps my ass now that its being ripped off yet again.

Though, I guess the greatest compliment is mimickry.

I think its cool when you hear a new take on an old tune, but when you hear the exact same music note for note in hundreds of trailers (ala Carmina Burana) it gets old quick.

I'll agree with that one. Another one I hate is the ripoffs of Gustav Hoslt's Mars for every battle scene trailer.

I'm no musician or anything, but I'm pretty sure we got more then 12 "notes" Traditionally, maybe, but I think the human ear can hear anything in the 10hz-20,000hz range(I think I made that up, but its something like that) so anything in there should be fair game...although I'm not sure what half-way between a A# and B would sound like...

I think too much music sounds alike these days anyway. Stupid people are like children, they are comfortable with what they know, and like repetition.

Of course, you're going by 'composers' who score film soundtracks. They're told what sort of music to create and work within those parameters, in a relatively shotr timeframe. Compare that to composers who create operas, symphonies, etc. and you'll rediscover innovation in the craft.

Who the hell said anything about hip-hop "artists"? I was talking about composers of operas and symphonies.

And yes, there are many still practicing the craft. Can't say if they're on par with mozart, but then Mozart was basically a pop artist in his time. One can only judge that sort of quality by how long it withstands changing tastes and times, so it's impossible to measurably compare a current composer with one of the classical masters.

Clint Mansell was given credit for the composition of the song. I don't think reusing a song is really ripping it off. Also, 20k Hz is really pushing it for the audible range for adults. A lot can't hear about 17,500 Hz. If you like Clint mansell, you might also like Philip Glass.
