KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - A former prison nurse opened fire on guards escorting her shackled husband from a Tennessee courthouse on Tuesday, killing one guard and escaping with her husband in a sport utility vehicle, authorities said.
Convict George Hyatte, 34, shouted "shoot 'em" to wife Jennifer Hyatte, 31, and she opened fire with at least six shots from a handgun, scattering dozens of witnesses outside the Roane County courthouse in Kingston, Kingston Police Chief Jim Washam said.
Three bullets struck guard Wayne "Cotton" Morgan, 56, who died at a hospital.
Morgan was one of two guards escorting the shackled and handcuffed Hyatte back to a prison van in the courthouse parking lot following his arraignment on aggravated burglary charges.
Hyatte climbed into the SUV being driven by his wife and the two sped off while a guard returned fire. The vehicle was found nearby with three bullet holes and blood on the driver's side, indicating Jennifer Hyatte may have been wounded, Washam said.
George Hyatte was in court to be tried on an outstanding burglary charge. He had served two years of a 35-year sentence for robbery and assault convictions.
Jennifer Hyatte was once a nurse under contract to the Tennessee Department of Corrections in Tiptonville, but her contract was terminated when she struck up a relationship with inmate George Hyatte, according to a department spokeswoman.
"There is a complete and thorough manhunt for the escapee and his wife Jennifer," Amanda Sluss said.
Kingston is 35 miles west of Knoxville in eastern Tennessee.

Supper 08-09-2005, 06:51 PM Is that really a bad thing?
what?
that they can't shoot a gun?
yes its a bad thing.
In my not so humble opinion, ever person in the united states should be required to take firearm safety courses and learn how to correctly shoot a pistol/rifle/revolver/whatever.
Maybe that way all the gang wars wouldn't just keep going, if the "boys" learned to shoot, maybe then we could have a few dead gang members instead of simply wounded.
I.E. 50cent. He was shot, what... three times in the face and lived? If the person who shot him knew how to aim and was shooting a propper weapon (.45 ACP or .40 S&W or similar), one shot to the head and the fucker would have been dead, and that way we wouldn't have to listen to his utter shit music everytime we (I) go to the bar.

"Pope said at least one element of Tuesday's escape was consistent with Hyatte's character.
"He was not the trigger man," Pope said. "That's more like George - let someone else do the dirty work."
Pope said Hyatte's other pronounced trait was his ability to juggle multiple relationships with women. He had a clear ability to manipulate the opposite sex, Pope said.
Hyatte's escape Tuesday was at least the fifth time has gotten way from law enforcement officials. The others were from local authorities in east Tennessee in 1990, 1991, 1998 and 2002.
During the escape three years ago, Hyatte and another prisoner escaped from the Rhea County Jail in Dayton, Tenn., where Hyatte grew up, after threatening guards with a homemade knife made out of toothbrushes and a razor blade.
When one guard turned over keys to the armed inmates, they then used them to beat another officer until he was unconscious. The escape ended a few days later when the two were captured in Florida."

Yeah - all those Israeli settlers being armed sure cuts down on the number of violent incidences in the Gaza strip, doesn't it? And the easy access to rifles and machetes sure helped during that business in Rwanda. Not to mention South Africa, where private citizens can get flamethrowers on their cars to prevent carjackings. And heavily armed civilians in Bosnia sure put a stop to that little tiff.
But wait! There is violence in Isreal. Weapons didn't stop a massacre in Rwanda. No-questions-asked ability to shoot potential thieves policies in South Africa have still lead to rampant fatal carjackings. half of the role of Peacekeepers in Bosnia was seizing weapons from civilians who were using them to blow away people of the opposite religion, destabilizing attempts at ending the ethnic cleansing.
Maybe having tons of weapons around means that peopel with bad intentions can get ahold of 'em too. Do you really want wannabe thugs to have mandatory weapons training?
