DarkAngelKamui 09-11-2008, 07:36 PM So folks, I know I haven't been around here much these days, but I figured some of you would like to know where I'm about to be.
I've decided that I'm going to enlist with the Army. Don't really feel like going into the details as to why, exactly. But it's something I've thought over and feel I need to do for myself.
I'll be around, and I'm definitely coming back if I do get deployed. Bet your ass on that. :bigthumb:
wotnartd 09-11-2008, 07:42 PM Well good for you.
Can I have your stuff if you die?
Fendamonky 09-11-2008, 08:26 PM Word, good luck. I hope you plan on either getting married, or are happy to live in a Barracks for the next 6+ years of your life.
What are you going in as??
I'm contemplating crossing (from the Navy) over the the Army in the next couple years to be a Warrant Officer.

Why the Army?
(Go Air Force, they treat their people the best... Trust me, I'm ex-Navy.)
Oh, and did anyone else think of this when they saw the thread title?

Vert8813B 09-12-2008, 06:02 AM Kev, when is the last time you saw an afro-american in the air force? Probably Tuskeegee.
Fendamonky 09-12-2008, 06:19 AM ^ Actually... they are either the coolest motherfuckers in, or absolute douche's.
The Air Force is largely inhabited (in my experiences) by geeky white kids who play WoW/Paper-Pencil D&D and post movies full of fail on Youtube.
God I'm ready to leave this fucking Air Force base... lol
Vert8813B 09-12-2008, 07:10 AM My work environment is full of Wow/Papaer-Pencil D&D dudes. Maybe they should all join the Air Force...
Fendamonky 09-12-2008, 12:27 PM good man...should do wonders for you
Holy shit! he's back (legitimately this time).
Though I'll agree that the military is damn good for some people, you seem to speak with a "been there, done that" tone. Were you ever in the Military?

DarkAngelKamui 09-12-2008, 01:58 PM Changed my mind, and I'm going to the Navy.
I'll be spending Monday and Tuesday taking the ASVAB. Wish me luck. :3
Vert8813B 09-12-2008, 03:11 PM You going to go SA-21?
DarkAngelKamui 09-12-2008, 03:35 PM Whatever that is... I'm not in yet, so I have no clue about abbreviations and what not.. lol
mazdaspeedrex 09-12-2008, 03:47 PM You can swim, right?
DarkAngelKamui 09-12-2008, 03:50 PM lmao, good one.
But yeah, I can a little (with scuba goggles on, at least. I hate the idea of water in my eyes and nose). I recon they'll teach me all I need to know about it, though.
1revnrex 09-12-2008, 03:56 PM Black people in the Military? What next, Black people in Basketball!?

If there's some serious reason why I shouldn't, I think you and I need to chat via AIM or phone or something. Lemme know through which channel you'd like to.

Let me get the kids off to bed, PM me your phone number, and I'll give you a call. I'll give you a guided legitimate tour of Navy life.
Fendamonky 09-12-2008, 07:50 PM Pick your rate, pick your fate...
You should know the rules Kevin ^_^
The 14th makes 6 years in the Navy for me. And I've got to say that it really all depends on what rate you choose when you come in..
DAK, take the ASVAB, see how you score, then decide from there. DON'T let the recruiter decide what job will be "best for you". Assume they have an agenda, because the do. Choose your job (rate) on your own, then inform them of what it will be.
If you'd like some help regarding the current Navy I'd be happy to be of assistance in answering any of your questions.
No matter what, don't sign SHIT unless you know what it says, and understand EXACTLY what that means.
And it's not SA-21 (that's some Surface-to-Air Missile fwiw), it's STA-21. That is a program for Enlisted personnel to get "stationed" at a college, their job is to go to school, they achieve their degree than become officers. It requires a longer obligation of service after graduation and doesn't guarantee you'll make rank beyond LT =P
jshiz 09-12-2008, 11:08 PM listen to $100. i have friends in all branches and the ones in the AF are the best off.
2ndGen.Rocket 09-13-2008, 08:56 PM Good luck son. I've got some friends in the Navy, let me know where you end up and I'll hook you up with them.
man_of_steel 09-13-2008, 10:16 PM Hey, good luck. I've got about 2 more months until I'm out of the USMC. Good run, but I'm not a lifer and it's time to stay in one place for a while.
czarofzar 09-13-2008, 11:30 PM go to boot camp in Orlando Florida. You get there by striking for aviation disciplines. Maybe also for Nuke. You can try to qualify for Seals there too.
but most importantly...
The women of the US Navy trains in Orlando, and will train side by side, 10 ft away from you.
A Tip: Try to masturbate as quietly as you can since you no longer will have privacy for many weeks.
Another Tip: I THINK AFTER TRADE SCHOOL, YOU CAN TRADE YOUR ORDERS WITH ANYONE. Think about what part of the world you want to explore for the first two years of your journey and trade for different orders if current isn't under your satisfaction.
/win

What the fuck are you on about???
You do realize that there is only ONE LOCATION for Navy bootcamp in America, right?
Aviation *does* train down in Mayport/Jax area. But, uh.... you'd have to be a RETARD to want to do that.. seriously. Nukes are all trained in South Carolina.
We don't have "Trade School", we have Boot Camp, "A" School and "C" School. After "A" School he can pick orders from a set list of what is available for his job and rank. What you are referring to is called "Cross-decking" and it's *not* easy to do.
Seriously, have you guys all forgotten that I am *currently* in the Navy, I have been for the last 6 years, and I'm more than likely to know a LOT more about the Navy these days than anybody else on the board?
DAK, if you've got any questions about the Navy feel free to PM me. I mean no disrespect to Kevin, but depending on how long he's been out for (anything over 10 years) the Navy has changed a LOT, and there is a good chance that what he remembers from it isn't entirely valid anymore.
sonofabelch 09-14-2008, 07:23 AM Either way you go, DAK, we need the help and I applaud your decision for service. I can help with an Army perspective and have worked with other services but obviously there are others here who can better explain the others than I can.
One point that was raised before is a good one: Take your time with the decision and get all the info you can from others before you decide which way to go. All recruiters will try to steer you toward areas which they are short on. If it's not for you, wait it out if possible. It's your life and possible career so make them decisions yourself and don't be pushed.
Good luck and let me know if I can help in any way.
czarofzar 09-14-2008, 02:33 PM um yeah. never mind about orlando bootcamp. fenda is correct. they closed the base down in 1995 i think. too bad. looks like youll be working out with pieces in the freezing weather
DarkAngelKamui 09-14-2008, 05:37 PM Thanks guys (or at least the ones who have been somewhat supportive of my decision... lol)
I had a little worry/fear about my decision the last two days, but now I'm sure this will be a positive step forward towards my future. Hell, I might even have some fun with it after basic. :D
Fendamonky 09-15-2008, 05:30 AM Thanks guys (or at least the ones who have been somewhat supportive of my decision... lol)

Well...
Spill it man! I take it you ended up deciding to go in the Navy. What rate are you going as? How did you do on your ASVAB (has a LOT to do with your career 'cause that can open a lot of doors, job wise)? When are you shipping out? Etc..
If you did go with the Navy I would *highly* recommend doing/passing that test they offer in DEP to let you come in as an E-2 (E-3 requires you to sell some friends to the Navy as well, I didn't like that idea, lol). I didn't do it and I kinda regretted it.
DarkAngelKamui 09-15-2008, 08:33 AM lol, nothing to spill just yet. I'm here waiting at home for the recruiter to pick me up (who is already an hour and a half late from when she told me to be ready... Women...) and take me to Fort Lee in Richmond, VA for testing.
I'll have my phone on me, so I'll be able to post my results once I get em.
Fendamonky 09-15-2008, 01:16 PM Before the ASVAB, which rates are you considering?? I'm trying to get a feel for what... caste... of the Navy you're trying to jump into.

Vert8813B 09-15-2008, 04:21 PM OCS. If you suck enough dick, they even pay for you to finish up your degree. I was contemplating it.

Considering the fact that you're not even in the military (and never have been) I'll consider your opinion on about the same level as I'd view taking workout advice from an obese person.

It's "pay grade". Back to what I said before... you have no idea what you're talking about.
Anyway, there is no need to hijack DAK's thread because you're a wanna-be and feel like arguing with somebody who's actually been there, done that, and has real experience with the subject. Kindly go back to your corner, I'm going to sleep.
Oh, and yesterday was my 6 year mark, I've not completed my 7th year yet.

Not like I have no friends or family who have been in longer than you. This is certainly and impossibility. Also, I oblige you to remember this immortal quote:

Listen dipshit, surely you know the purpose of a fucking thread by now. The intent of THIS PARTICULAR ONE was for opinions regarding a decision that will affect DAK for the rest of his life. Just because you have several years of experience taking it up the poo chute in the Navy doesn't make you the fucking aficionado for this conversation.
Oh, and yesterday was my 6 year mark, I've not completed my 7th year yet.

DarkAngelKamui 09-17-2008, 01:08 PM So the results are in... Ended up getting an 85 on my test, which put me in a position to choose just about any job I wanted. Told em what interested me, and I ended up taking Advanced Electronics/Computer Field and will most likely go in as an FC (Fire Controlman). ET (elec tech) is nice, but I wanna fuck with shit that blows stuff up. Plus, the sign-on bonus wasn't too shabby either. :3
I'm still at Ft. Lee waiting to get sworn in, then I gotta wait till May 27, 2009 to roll out to basic. Will def try to speed up the process, though.
Tofuball 09-17-2008, 01:37 PM Remember to drop by :)
Whats the pay like?

FC/ET is good because you'll make E-4 REALLY quick, and you'll get a clearance. The only problem is, iirc, last time I was on a ship it seems that the rates go stagnant at E-5.. in order to push past that you've got to be REEEAAAAALLLLLYYYY good, or salty as fuck!
On the plus side you'll be working in CIC (Combat) and you won't need to worry about sweating your ass off in the summer, unless you stand deck watches, since you'll be working in a *very* Air Conditioned space.
Good luck man, I'll be back in Norfolk getting spun up for my next deployment to Iraq just before you leave for bootcamp. Could get together for a night out or something if ya want.
Fendamonky 09-17-2008, 05:21 PM Not like I have no friends or family who have been in longer than you.
Yeah... military brats tend to think they know everything.
Also, I oblige you to remember this immortal quote:
"Those who think they know everything, know nothing."
So I'm trying to decide if it's ignorance, or insolence which drove you to post this... Hello, Pot? My name is Kettle.
Get a life ya pudgy loser.

Your mindless mantra of "Don't be a fool, go Officer!" reminds me of Mark ranting about hellfire and cancer. Oh yeah, and the fact that you haven't got either A) the balls, or B) the ability to join the military says that you're opinions are baseless. I never claimed that I was the end-all, be-all on the subject. I've simply pointed out that you don't have feet to stand on regarding this subject.
Congratufuckinglations, Sally.
Way to be a douche... thanks for following the conversation. Here, I'll give you a quick recap so you know what's happening:
And considering your pay class is like an E-5 after 7 years in the military proves that you are a fucking moron.
Oh, and yesterday was my 6 year mark, I've not completed my 7th year yet.
That was a direct response to an assumption you made (presumably based on my age). Way to make yourself look like even more of a fucking retard. And being an E-5 with 6 years in is REALLY normal in 95% of the Navy. Considering that your average "O" with similar time in will only be an O-3... guess who's been promoted more?
Oh, and don't even TRY to get me with the whole pay difference bit. If I wanted to I could get out and step right into one of several jobs in the civilian world (I'd be supervising you there btw) with a starting salary of (at the very lowest) $80k-$90k. I'd like to see YOUR ass do that with your college degree (did I mention I've only got 36 credit hours?). Since you only seem to care about how much money you (would theoretically, if you ever grew a set) make than maybe that will help clear some shit up.
DarkAngelKamui 09-17-2008, 05:49 PM And considering your pay class is like an E-5 after 7 years in the military proves that you are a fucking moron. :bigthumb:
Actually, 6-7 years as an E-5 is pretty standard fare... This is coming from my recruiter...
